Nonlinear seismic analysis of a reactor structure impact between core components

The seismic analysis of the FFTF-PIOTA (Fast Flux Test Facility-Postirradiation Open Test Assembly), subjected to a horizontal DBE (Design Base Earthquake) is presented. The PIOTA is the first in a set of open test assemblies to be designed for the FFTF. Employing the direct method of transient analysis, the governing differential equations describing the motion of the system are set up directly and are implicitly integrated numerically in time. A simple lumped-nass beam model of the FFTF which includes small clearances between core components is used as a "driver" for a fine mesh model of the PIOTA. The nonlinear forces due to the impact of the core components and their effect on the PIOTA are computed.

Building a better framework for evaluating human well-being impacts in global change analysis: The example of energy security

Human well-being can be greatly impacted by the global environmental and socio-economic change captured in Integrated Models of Global Change (IMGCs). Though most IMGCs address some aspects of well-being, their underlying modeling approach and ‘philosophy’ differ widely, and some key elements – like energy security – are omitted. In this report, we describe a project in which we set out to a create a framework through which the well-being dimensions of the household are connected to key drivers of socio-economic and environmental change – and how the needed metrics, data and modeling methods can be brought to bear. We focus on the well-being dimensions of energy, and lay out the necessary elements to capturing household energy security – using household energy burden as the relevant metric. We begin by showing the conceptual linkage of energy burden to environmental drivers like temperature change, using a simple and straightforward conceptual framework. We then go further to use the example of GCAM-USA to show how some key analytical features of the model can provide insight into how energy security across different groups can change along alternative pathways to sustainability. We compare our preliminary assessment of household energy burden to existing data and suggest further steps to improve and refine this analysis in future research.

Analysis of the Financial Impacts of Building Performance Standard Penalties on Commercial Buildings in Aurora, Colorado

Buildings are responsible for 30% of total energy consumption worldwide. To address building energy, jurisdictions in the USA have enacted Building Performance Standards (BPS) legislation. The objective of BPS is to reduce energy consumption in buildings, thereby reducing the energy burden on utility infrastructure and other externalities. This is accomplished by setting mandatory energy use limits coupled with penalties for exceeding those limits. One of the key questions in BPS policymaking is how these penalties might impact the finances of building owners and tenants. This paper presents an analysis of BPS penalties in Aurora, Colorado, specifically targeting buildings impacted by the adopted statewide BPS legislation. Several BPS penalty structures were applied to the affected building stock in Aurora, and the potential impacts on building owner returns and tenant rents were estimated. The results show that for some combinations of building types and penalty structures, potential rent increases due to penalties could match or exceed typical yearly rent increases. The results also show that in most cases, for Aurora, there was no statistically significant difference in impact between buildings located in under-resourced and well-resourced areas.

Electrification of Pakistan's Transport System: Modeling Electric Vehicle Penetration and Energy Supply Chain Impacts

Initial analysis of the National Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) of Pakistan was undertaken by an integrated energy planning team from November 2019 through August 2020. This technical reference document seeks to present the background, inputs and assumptions, methodology, and results of the policy analysis in detail. The intended audience is the technical modeler, analyst, or reviewer who seeks to understand specifically the modeling effort within this initial analytical phase, with the end-goal of interpreting, re-producing, or modifying the simulations or extending the models to conduct follow-on studies subsequently. These studies may examine in greater detail the energy sector, impacts to emissions, charging station infrastructure needs, and overall benefits-cost trade of the policy, among other areas of interest.

Radiative transfer to space through a precipitating cloud at multiple microwave frequencies. I - Model description. II - Results and analysis

The impact of time-dependent cloud microphysical structure on the transfer to space of passive microwave radiation is studied at several frequencies across the EHF and lower SHF portions of the microwave spectrum. The feasibility of using multichannel passive-microwave retrieval techniques to estimate precipitation from space-based platforms is examined. The model is described, and the results are assessed in conjunction with a Nimbus-7 SMMR case study of precipitation in an intense tropical Pacific storm. It is concluded that the effects of cloud liquid water content must be considered to obtain a realistic estimation and distribution of rainrates.

Impact of composite plates: Analysis of stresses and forces

The foreign object damage resistance of composite fan blades was studied. Edge impact stresses in an anisotropic plate were first calculated incorporating a constrained layer damping model. It is shown that a very thin damping layer can dramatically decrease the maximum normal impact stresses. A multilayer model of a composite plate is then presented which allows computation of the interlaminar normal and shear stresses. Results are presented for the stresses due to a line impact load normal to the plane of a composite plate. It is shown that significant interlaminar tensile stresses can develop during impact. A computer code was developed for this problem using the fast Fourier transform. A marker and cell computer code were also used to investigate the hydrodynamic impact of a fluid slug against a wall or turbine blade. Application of fluid modeling of bird impact is reviewed.

A fracture mechanics analysis for delamination growth during impact on composite plates

A fracture mechanics analysis has been developed that describes the progress of delamination damage in composite plates struck by a hard spherical object. The analysis is based on large deflection plate mechanics for circular isotropic plates wherein multiple axisymmetric delaminations grow. Test data show that the analysis predicts the influence of plate thickness, support conditions, and matrix toughness on the onset and propagation of delamination.

Impact craters on Venus - Initial analysis from Magellan

The general features of impact craters are described emphasizing two aspects: the effect of the atmosphere on crater and ejecta morphology and the implications of the distribution and appearance of the craters for the volcanic and tectonic resurfacing history of Venus. Magellan radar images reveal 135 craters about 15 km in diameter containing central peaks, multiple central peaks, and peak rings. Craters smaller than 15 km exhibit multiple floors or appear in clusters. Surface flows of material initially entrained in the atmosphere are characterized. Zones of low radar albedo originated from deformation of the surface by the shock or pressure wave associated with the incoming meteoroid surround many craters. A spectrum of surface ages on Venus ranging from 0 to 800 million years indicates that Venus must be a geologically active planet.

Integrated analysis of engine structures

The need for light, durable, fuel efficient, cost effective aircraft requires the development of engine structures which are flexible, made from advaced materials (including composites), resist higher temperatures, maintain tighter clearances and have lower maintenance costs. The formal quantification of any or several of these requires integrated computer programs (multilevel and/or interdisciplinary analysis programs interconnected) for engine structural analysis/design. Several integrated analysis computer prorams are under development at Lewis Reseach Center. These programs include: (1) COBSTRAN-Composite Blade Structural Analysis, (2) CODSTRAN-Composite Durability Structural Analysis, (3) CISTRAN-Composite Impact Structural Analysis, (4) STAEBL-StruTailoring of Engine Blades, and (5) ESMOSS-Engine Structures Modeling Software System. Three other related programs, developed under Lewis sponsorship, are described.

Transient analysis techniques in performing impact and crash dynamic studies

Because of the emphasis being placed on crashworthiness as a design requirement, increasing demands are being made by various organizations to analyze a wide range of complex structures that must perform safely when subjected to severe impact loads, such as those generated in a crash event. The ultimate goal of crashworthiness design and analysis is to produce vehicles with the ability to reduce the dynamic forces experienced by the occupants to specified levels, while maintaining a survivable envelope around them during a specified crash event. DYCAST is a nonlinear structural dynamic finite element computer code that started from the plans systems of a finite element program for static nonlinear structural analysis. The essential features of DYCAST are outlined.
