SIMULATeQCD: A simple multi-GPU lattice code for QCD calculations

The rise of exascale supercomputers has fueled competition among GPU vendors, driving lattice QCD developers to write code that supports multiple APIs. Moreover, new developments in algorithms and physics research require frequent updates to existing software. These challenges have to be balanced against constantly changing personnel. At the same time, there is a wide range of applications for HISQ fermions in QCD studies. This situation encourages the development of software featuring a HISQ action that is flexible, high-performing, open source, easy to use, and easy to adapt. In this technical paper, we explain the design strategy, provide implementation details, list available algorithms and modules, and show key performance indicators for SIMULATeQCD, a simple multi-GPU lattice code for large-scale QCD calculations, mainly developed and used by the HotQCD collaboration. The code is publicly available on GitHub.

QCD Predictions for Meson Electromagnetic Form Factors at High Momenta: Testing Factorization in Exclusive Processes

We report the first lattice QCD computation of pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors, 𝐹 𝑀⁡ (𝑄 2 ), at large momentum transfer up to 10 and 28 GeV 2 , respectively. Utilizing physical masses and two fine lattices, we achieve good agreement with JLab experimental results at 𝑄 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 . For 𝑄 2 ≳ 4 GeV 2 , our results provide ab initio QCD benchmarks for the forthcoming experiments at JLab 12 GeV and future electron-ion colliders. We also test the QCD collinear factorization framework utilizing our high-𝑄 2 form factors at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, which relates the form factors to the leading Fock-state meson distribution amplitudes. Comparisons with independent lattice QCD calculations using the same framework demonstrate, within estimated uncertainties, the universality of these nonperturbative quantities.

Measuring the Neutron Spin Asymmetry A1n in the Valence Quark Region in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

The quest to understand how the nucleon spin is decomposed into its constituent quark and gluon spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM) components has been at the forefront of nuclear physics for decades. Due to the non-perturbative nature of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) - the theory describing how quarks and gluons bind together to form protons and neutrons - making absolute predictions of nucleon spin structure is generally difficult, especially as a function of its quark and gluon longitudinal momentum fraction x. Measurements involving nucleon spin structure serve as a sensitive test for QCD, including ab-initio lattice QCD calculations due to the advent of the quasi-PDF formalism, and various predictions that diverge at large-x. The neutron spin asymmetry An 1 at high?x is a key observable for probing nucleon spin structure. In the valence domain (x > 0.5), sea effects are expected to be negligible, and so the total nucleon spin is considered to be carried by the valence quarks. The valence region can therefore enable us to study the role of quark OAM and other non-perturbative effects of the strong force. An 1 was measured in the deep inelastic scattering region of 0.40 < x < 0.75 and 6 < Q2 < 10 GeV2 in Hall C at Jefferson Lab using a 10.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam, upgraded polarized 3He target, and the High Momentum Spectrometer (HMS) and Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS). E12- 06-110 provides the first precision data in the valence quark region above x = 0.60, and its preliminary results proved consistent with earlier data disqualifying a pQCD model that excluded quark OAM. Combined with previous world proton data, the ratio of the polarized-to-unpolarized up quark momentum distribution (?u + ?u)/(u + u) remained positive at large-x, and the down quark (?d + ?d)/(d + d) remained negative.

New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data. Entanglement, trace anomaly, and confinement in QCD

We formulate confinement in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as an entropic surface phenomenon. Quark and gluon quantum information is localized on a transverse, entangling two-sphere of radius 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ; at this radius the QCD vacuum—partitioned by a hadron into interior and exterior regions—reaches its maximal entanglement entropy. Lattice-QCD determinations of the scalar (trace) gravitational form factors fix both 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 and the transverse trace-anomaly density 𝜌 ℎ ⁡(𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ), yielding a parameter-free slope 𝑐 ℎ = 8⁢𝜋 2 ⁢𝑅𝑆$^2_{𝐸⁢𝐸}$𝜌 ℎ ⁡(𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ) and a mechanical entropy 𝑆 𝐸⁢𝐸 ⁡(𝑦) = 𝑐 ℎ ⁢𝑦 that grows linearly with rapidity 𝑦. The entropy gradient ∂ 𝑅 𝑆 𝐸⁢𝐸 changes sign at 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 : it pushes colored degrees of freedom outward for 𝑟 <𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 and pulls them inward for 𝑟 >𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 , thereby localizing them on the codimension-2 entangling two-sphere Σ ⊥ = 𝑆$^2_{𝑅_{𝐸⁢𝐸}}$ (which, in the infinite-momentum frame (IMF), projects onto the transverse plane)—the “information wall.” This provides a high-energy (large-𝑦) entropic confinement diagnostic that complements—rather than replaces—Wilson’s area-law criterion, which probes long-distance dynamics near the rest frame (𝑦 → 0). Imposing unitarity on an entropic ansatz for the amplitude yields 𝜎⁡(𝑠) ∝ 𝑦 𝛿 . World data favor 𝛿 = 2 for elastic 𝑝⁡𝑝⁡($𝑝\bar{⁡𝑝}$) scattering and heavy-quark photoproduction, whereas 𝜙 photoproduction favors a softer 𝛿 = 0.387. All extracted cross sections remain well below the Froissart-Martin bound. These results provide a confinement criterion quantified directly from nonperturbative QCD inputs, unifying the trace anomaly, entanglement entropy, and high-energy scattering within a single quantitative framework.

𝜂 and 𝜂′ Production in 𝐽/𝜓 Radiative Decays from Quantum Chromodynamics

We present a first principles calculation within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) of the radiative decays of the 𝐽/𝜓 into the light pseudoscalar mesons 𝜂 and 𝜂′. Within a lattice computation we obtain the transition form factors as a function of photon virtuality from the timelike region, accessible experimentally via the “Dalitz” decay 𝐽/𝜓 →𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ⁢𝜂 (′) , through to the real photon point corresponding to 𝐽/𝜓 →𝛾⁢𝜂 (′) . This is the first calculation in lattice QCD with two (heavier than physical) degenerate flavors of light quark and a heavier strange quark, in which the 𝜂′ appears as the first excited state with pseudoscalar isoscalar quantum numbers. We access it reliably by using variationally optimized operators , the use of which also improves the purity of the 𝐽/𝜓 and 𝜂 signals, reducing systematic uncertainties. High quality results at a large number of kinematic points are obtained in a typically noisy disconnected process by using a novel correlator averaging procedure. Our results show the expected enhanced production of the 𝜂′ over the 𝜂 in this process, and suggest that the demonstrated lattice technology is suitable for future calculations considering processes in which light meson resonances are produced.

Higher order cumulants of net baryon-number distributions at non-zero μ

Using recent results on higher order cumulants of conserved charge fluctuations from lattice QCD, we construct mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, hyper-skewness and hyper-kurtosis of net-baryon number distributions for small baryon chemical potentials μ B . For the strangeness neutral case ( μ S = 0) at fixed ratio of electric charge to baryon number density ( n Q n B = 0.4 ), which is appropriate for a comparison with heavy ion collisions, we present results for κ B σ 2 B , S B σ 3 B / M B , κ H B σ 4 B and S H B σ 5 B / M B on the crossover line for the chiral transition, T pc ( μ B ). Furthermore, continuum extrapolations for this pseudo-critical transition line have recently been reported by HotQCD up to baryon chemical potentials μ B ≃ 300 MeV [A. Bazavov, et al., Chiral crossover in QCD at zero and non-zero chemical potentials, Phys. Lett. B 795 (2019) 15–21. arXiv:1812.08235 .]. These cumulant ratios are of direct relevance for comparisons with corresponding ratios measured by STAR in the BES-I and II runs at beam energies s NN ≥ 20 GeV . In particular, we point out that recent high statistics results on skewness and kurtosis of net-baryon number distributions obtained by STAR at s NN = 54.4 GeV put strong constraints on freeze-out parameters and are consistent with predictions from thermal QCD.

Octet and decuplet baryon σ terms and mass decompositions

We present a comprehensive analysis of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryon masses and σ terms using high-precision lattice QCD data and chiral SU(3) effective theory with finite range regularization. The effects of various systematic uncertainties, including from the scale setting of the lattice data and the regularization prescriptions, are quantified. We find the pion-nucleon and strange nucleon σ terms to be σ πN = 44(3)(3) MeV and σ Ns = 50(6)(1) MeV, respectively. Furthermore, the results provide constraints on the energy-momentum tensor mass decompositions of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons, where we find that the trace anomaly and quark-gluon energies decrease for strange baryons due to their larger strange σ terms.

Accessing the gluon momentum fraction of nucleons through the gradient flow

We calculate the gluon momentum fraction of the nucleon using lattice QCD, with a nonperturbative renormalization technique based on the gradient flow. The gluon momentum fraction is determined on a single Wilson-clover ensemble using 𝑁 𝑓 =2 +1 flavors with pion mass 358 MeV and lattice spacing 0.094 fm. We employ the variational method to reduce excited-state contamination and apply the distillation framework to ensure a large operator basis. To reduce systematic uncertainties, we apply Bayesian model averaging to all fit procedures. We apply matching coefficients to the flow-time dependent lattice results to recover the gluon momentum fraction in the $\overline{MS}$-scheme at 2 GeV. Our final result is ⟨𝑥⟩ 𝑔 ⁢(𝜇 =2 GeV) =0.482⁢(35), where we quote only statistical uncertainties.

Conjectures about the Chiral Phase Transition in QCD from Anomalous Multi-Instanton Interactions

To date numerical simulations of lattice QCD have not found a chiral phase transition of first order that is expected to occur for sufficiently light pions. We show how the restoration of an exact global chiral symmetry can strongly decrease the breaking of the approximate, anomalous U A ( 1 ) symmetry. This is testable on the lattice through simulations for one through four flavors. In QCD a small breaking of the U A ( 1 ) symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase generates novel experimental signals. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Separation of infrared and bulk in thermal QCD

A new thermal regime of QCD, featuring decoupled scale-invariant infrared glue, has been proposed to exist both in pure-glue (N f =0) and “real-world” (N f =2+1 at physical quark masses) QCD. In this IR phase, elementary degrees of freedom flood the infrared, forming a distinct component independent from the bulk. This behavior necessitates non-analyticities in the theory. In pure-glue QCD, such non-analyticities have been shown to arise via Anderson-like mobility edges in Dirac spectra (λ IR = 0, ±λ A ≠ 0), as manifested in the dimension function d IR (λ). Here, we present the first evidence, based on lattice QCD calculation at a=0.105 fm, that this mechanism is also at work in real-world QCD, thus supporting the existence of the proposed IR regime in nature. An important aspect of our results is that, while at T = 234 MeV we find a dimensional jump between zero modes and lowest near-zero modes very close to unity (d IR = 3 to d IR ≃ 2), similar to the IR phase of pure-glue QCD, at T = 187 MeV we observe a continuous λ-dependence. This suggests that thermal states just above the chiral crossover are non-analytically (in T) connected to thermal state at T = 234 MeV, supporting the key original proposition that the transition into the IR regime occurs at a temperature strictly above the chiral crossover.

Three relativistic neutrons in a finite volume

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic (RFT) three-particle finite-volume formalism to systems of three identical, massive, spin-1/2 fermions, such as three neutrons. This allows, in principle, for the determination of the three-neutron interaction from the finite-volume spectrum of three-neutron states, which can be obtained from lattice QCD calculations.

Skewness-dependent moments of the pion GPD from nonlocal quark-bilinear correlators

We present lattice QCD calculations of the odd Mellin moments of pion valence-quark generalized parton distribution up to fifth order ⟨𝑥 4 ⟩ and for the skewness range [−0.33, 0] using operator product expansion of bilocal quark-bilinear operators. The calculations are performed on an ensemble with lattice spacing 𝑎 = 0.04 fm and valence pion mass 300 MeV, employing boosted pion states with momenta up to 2.428 GeV and momentum transfers reaching 2.748 GeV 2 . We employ ratio-scheme renormalization and next-to-leading logarithmic resummed perturbative matching. At zero skewness, our results are consistent with previous lattice studies. By combining matrix elements at multiple values of skewness and momentum transfer, skewness-dependent moments are obtained through simultaneous polynomiality-constrained fits.

Updated analyses of gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon from the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral quark model

In this work, we investigate the gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon, in addition to the improved result of the valence-quark ones, in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model, in which the momentum dependence of the quark interactions is properly taken into account. We then analyze the gluon distribution functions, generated dynamically through the splitting functions in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi QCD evolution. By comparing with the recent lattice QCD results and Jefferson Lab angular momentum global analyses, it is found that the present numerical results for the gluon parton distribution functions for the pion exhibit a good agreement and the valence up-quark distribution results for the pion by reproducing the reanalyzed experimental data with a remarkable agreement. Our prediction on the gluon distribution functions for the kaon is also consistent with the recent lattice data for the kaon within the errors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Spectrum of Dirac eigenvalues across QCD chiral transition

Here, we show that the universal scaling properties of the chiral phase transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at the macroscale are encoded in the microscopic energy levels of the quarks in the background of gluon fields, defined as eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. We introduce a novel relation between the cumulants of the chiral condensate, and the correlations among the energy levels of quarks, i.e., the eigenspectra of the massless QCD Dirac operator. This relation elucidates how the fluctuations of the chiral condensate arise from the correlations within the infrared part of the energy spectra of quarks, and naturally leads to a generalization of the Banks-Casher relation for the cumulants of the chiral condensate. Then, through (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculations using HISQ action with varying light quark masses around the chiral phase transition temperature, we demonstrate that the correlations among the infrared part of the Dirac eigenvalue spectra exhibit same universal scaling behaviors as expected of the cumulants of the chiral condensate. We find that these universal scaling behaviors extend up to the physical values of the up and down quark masses.

Direct CP violation and the ΔI=1/2 rule in K→ππ decay from the standard model

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the Δ I = 1 / 2 , K → π π decay amplitude A 0 and ϵ ' , the measure of direct C P violation in K → π π decay, improving our 2015 calculation [1] of these quantities. Both calculations were performed with physical kinematics on a 32 3 × 64 lattice with an inverse lattice spacing of a - 1 = 1.3784 ( 68 ) GeV . However, the current calculation includes nearly 4 times the statistics and numerous technical improvements allowing us to more reliably isolate the π π ground state and more accurately relate the lattice operators to those defined in the standard model. We find Re ( A 0 ) = 2.99 ( 0.32 ) ( 0.59 ) × 10 - 7 GeV and Im ( A 0 ) = - 6.98 ( 0.62 ) ( 1.44 ) × 10 - 11 GeV , where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The former agrees well with the experimental result Re ( A 0 ) = 3.3201 ( 18 ) × 10 - 7 GeV . These results for A 0 can be combined with our earlier lattice calculation of A 2 [2] to obtain Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 21.7 ( 2.6 ) ( 6.2 ) ( 5.0 ) × 10 - 4 , where the third error represents omitted isospin breaking effects, and Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 19.9 ( 2.3 ) ( 4.4 ) . The first agrees well with the experimental result of Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 16.6 ( 2.3 ) × 10 - 4 . A comparison of the second with the observed ratio Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 22.45 ( 6 ) , demonstrates the standard model origin of this “ Δ I = 1 / 2 rule” enhancement.

Strangeness-neutral equation of state for QCD with a critical point

We present a strangeness-neutral equation of state for QCD that exhibits critical behavior and matches lattice QCD results for the Taylor-expanded thermodynamic variables up to fourth-order in µ B /T. It is compatible with the SMASH hadronic transport approach and has a range of temperatures and baryonic chemical potentials relevant for phase II of the Beam Energy Scan at RHIC. We provide an updated version of the software BES-EoS, which produces an equation of state for QCD that includes a critical point in the 3D Ising model universality class. This new version also includes isentropic trejectories and the critical contribution to the correlation length. Since heavy-ion collisions have zero global net-strangeness density and a fixed ratio of electric charge to baryon number, the BES-EoS is more suitable to describe this system. Comparison with the previous version of the EoS is thoroughly discussed.
