Corrosion Resistance of 309L Stainless Steel Claddings on Carbon Steel Produced with Wire-Fed Directed Energy Deposition

Additive manufacturing (AM) tools are capable of applying overlay austenitic stainless steel (SS) claddings to carbon steel components. The benefits of this approach over arc welding include a smaller heat-affected zone, residual stress reduction, and material savings. In particular, wire-directed energy deposition is a suitable technique because of its low material cost and high rate of production compared to other AM methods. However, metallurgical variations in composition, phase fraction, and microsegregation can potentially influence the corrosion behavior of such claddings. In this work, 309L SS is clad on carbon steel substrates and electrochemical methods are used to measure their general and pitting corrosion resistance in simulated marine environments (3.5 wt% NaCl solutions). Two-layer claddings are fabricated with four laser powers to understand the effects of bulk chemical composition, austenite/δ-ferrite phase fractions, and individual phase compositions on corrosion behavior. The two-layer claddings are compared to a single-layer cladding, wrought 304 SS, and the carbon steel substrate for a comprehensive assessment of corrosion performance. The two-layer claddings are remarkably resistant to general corrosion in the 3.5 wt% NaCl environment because of their high Cr content (21.6 wt% to 23.3 wt% Cr). The single-layer cladding exhibits localized corrosion at unmixed Fe-rich peninsulas that originate at the dissimilar metal boundary and protrude into the first cladding layer. All two-layer claddings possess higher pitting corrosion resistance than wrought 304 SS, demonstrating their effectiveness as a corrosion-resistant barrier. Here, the pitting corrosion resistance is superior for claddings made with lower laser powers, due to low dilution and greater δ-ferrite contents.

Characteristics of a Lunar Landing Configuration Having Various Multiple-Leg Landing-Gear Arrangements

An experimental investigation has been made of some lunar-landing characteristics of a 1/6-scale dynamic model of a landing module having multiple-leg landing-gear systems. Symmetric four-point and five-point systems were investigated. The landing-gear legs were inverted tripod arrangements having a telescoping main strut which incorporated a yielding-metal strap for energy dissipation, hinged V-struts, and circular pads. The landing tests were made by launching a free model onto an impenetrable hard surface (concrete) and onto a powdered-pumice overlay of various depths. Landing motion and acceleration data were obtained for a range of touchdown speeds, touchdown attitudes, and landing-surface conditions. Maximum normal acceleration experienced at the module center of gravity during landings on hard surface or pumice was 2g (full-scale lunar value in terms of earth's gravity) over a wide range of touchdown conditions. acceleration experienced was 12 1/2 radians/sec(exp 2) and maximum longitudinal acceleration was 1 3/4g. The module was very stable with all gear configurations during landings on hard surface (coefficient of friction, micron = 0.4) at all conditions tested. Some overturn instability occurred during landings on powdered pumice (micron = 0.7 to 1.0) depending upon flight path, pitch and yaw attitude, depth of pumice, surface topography, and landing-gear configuration. The effect on stability of roll attitude for the limited amount of roll-attitude landing data obtained was insignificant. Compared with the four-point landing gear, the five-point system with equal maximum gear radius increased landing stability slightly and improved the static stability for subsequent lunar launch. A considerable increase in landing stability in the direction of motion was obtained with an asymmetric four-point gear having two pads offset to increase gear radius by 33 percent in the direction of horizontal flight.

Analyses of requirements for computer control and data processing experiment subsystems. Volume 2: ATM experiment S-056 image data processing system software development

The IDAPS (Image Data Processing System) is a user-oriented, computer-based, language and control system, which provides a framework or standard for implementing image data processing applications, simplifies set-up of image processing runs so that the system may be used without a working knowledge of computer programming or operation, streamlines operation of the image processing facility, and allows multiple applications to be run in sequence without operator interaction. The control system loads the operators, interprets the input, constructs the necessary parameters for each application, and cells the application. The overlay feature of the IBSYS loader (IBLDR) provides the means of running multiple operators which would otherwise overflow core storage.

Inventory and analysis of natural vegetation and related resources from space and high altitude photography

A high altitude photomosaic resource map of Site 29 was produced which provided an opportunity to test photo interpretation accuracy of natural vegetation resource features when mapped at a small (1:133,400) scale. Helicopter reconnaissance over 144 previously selected test points revealed a highly adequate level of photo interpretation accuracy. In general, the reasons for errors could be accounted for. The same photomosaic resource map enabled construction of interpretive land use overlays. Based on features of the landscape, including natural vegetation types, judgements for land use suitability were made and have been presented for two types of potential land use. These two, agriculture and urbanization, represent potential land use conflicts.

Coordination and establishment of centralized facilities and services for the University of Alaska ERTS survey of the Alaskan environment

The author has identified the following significant results. Specifications have been prepared for the engineering design and construction of a digital color display unit which will be used for automatic processing of ERTS data. The color display unit is a disk refresh memory with computer interfaced input and a color cathode ray tube output display. The system features both analog and digital post disk data manipulation and a versatile color coding device suitable for displaying not only images, but also computer generated graphics such as diagrams, maps, and overlays. Input is from IBM compatible 9 track, 800 BPI tapes, as generated by an IBM 360 computer. ERTS digital tapes are read into the 360, where various analyses such as maximum likelihood classification are performed and the results are written on a magnetic tape which is the input to the color display unit. The greatest versatility in the data manipulation area is provided by the minicomputer built into the color display unit, which is off-line from the main 360 computer. The minicomputer is able to read any line from the refresh disk and place it in its 4K-16 bit memory. Considerable flexibility is available for post-processing enhancement of images by the investigator.

Identification and interpretation of tectonic features from ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. An important fault zone, which is strongly suspected of being seismically active, was identified on RBV images, ERTS E-1013-17305 (101, 201, and 301), in northeastern Utah. This fault zone is not shown on the Geological Map of the United States nor on the Tectonic Map of North America. When the epicenters of historic earthquakes and their magnitudes were plotted on an overlay corresponding to the scene, a major earthquake cluster up to magnitude 4.9 was found through which the fault zone passes. This suspected active fault zone runs in a northwest-southwest direction cutting across the Patmos Mountains and the southwestern side of the East Tavaputs Plateau from near the junction of the Colorado River with the Dolores River to and beyond the town of Dragerton, Utah. The fault zone which will subsequently be referred to as the Dragerton fault zone appears to be an element of a major tectonic lineament which includes the Moab fault, Salt Valley, Spanish and Lisbon Valleys. Because of the limited imagery coverage received so far, the extent of this lineament or its tectonic significance cannot be ascertained. It is suspected, however, that it constitutes a major crustal break in the Colorado Plateau.

Alternating current losses of stabilized NbN.

The ac losses of thin films of NbN have been measured on uncoated samples and samples coated with copper and aluminum. The reversibility of the superconducting to normal transition was studied under conditions of swept current at fixed field and swept field at fixed current. Results show that thin films of NbN can be stabilized by using normal metal overlays, and that ac losses in the stabilized material are substantially lower than those in the equivalent unstabilized material.
