Microreactors are very small nuclear reactors with a power output up to 50 megawatts electric (MWe) which also meet the standards of an “advanced nuclear reactor.” Microreactors are designed to be factory-built, modular in nature, and may be transportable. These compact small-sized reactors in some design configurations are small enough to be transported by truck which could help solve certain energy challenges. This report refers to these reactors as transportable microreactors or transportable nuclear power plants (TNPPs). Transportable microreactors are being considered for a wide range of independent operation applications.

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) collaborated with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR) and Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) to investigate the reasonable variability in the estimation of dose exceedance distances. SNL performed calculations using the MACCS code to elucidate the sensitivity of dose exceedance distances to variations in user input parameters.

The Natural Convection Shutdown Heat Removal Test Facility (NSTF) at Argonne National Laboratory has continued to generate empirical validation data on the performance of water-based reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) for seven years. This data is actively being used to support the development of passive decay heat removal systems for advanced reactors. Distinguishing this facility are 1) the large, ½ scale of the facility and 2) its governance under an NQA-1 qualified program for producing data of the highest pedigree for advanced reactor designers and regulators. In addition to the experimental activities discussed in this report, a computational modeling program continues to support the experimental program and further accuracy and understanding of the computational models. Together, the experimental and computational work create a mutually beneficial relationship integral to the overall program objective of advancing the understanding of the RCCS technology.
This technical document (TECH) contains an analysis of several conditions deemed credible for plutonium oxide buildup in high-efficiency air particulate (HEPA) filters to determine the effect of holdup inside the filter on reactivity. This document is performed in accordance with NCS-AP-005, R3 [Ref. (1)].
