LANDSAT D: X-band analysis study

The effects of the use of an X-band carrier frequency on the transmission link margins and on the affected ground station equipment are investigated. The specific effects of the X-band carrier frequency allocation on the link margin are detailed. This includes an examination of a Local User Terminal's (LUT) coverage circle radius requirements, detailed elements of the link calculation, and specific spacecraft and ground configurations that would satisfy the link requirements. The requirements that spacecraft signal acquisition and tracking place on the front-end of the ground station equipment are also examined. The availability of the required ground station equipment and representative costs for these items are included. The costs considered shall be both for procurement of a new ground station (front-end only) and for modification of an existing S-band station to X-band.

Atmospheric, Magnetospheric and Plasmas in Space (AMPS) spacelab payload definition study; volume 4: Part 2, Labcraft payload general specification

The Labcraft Payload General Specification (LPGS) amplifies those general requirements in the Labcraft Program Specification (LPS) to ensure that all hardware, software, and STS elements will successfully function as an integrated system to accomplish the objectives of the first Labcraft mission. Contract End Item Specifications (CEIS) and Procurement Drawings (PDs) prepared and implemented for all deliverable hardware and software elements are discussed.

Development of standardized specifications for silicon solar cells

A space silicon solar cell assembly (cell and coverglass) specification aimed at standardizing the diverse requirements of current cell or assembly specifications was developed. This specification was designed to minimize both the procurement and manufacturing costs for space qualified silicon solar cell assembilies. In addition, an impact analysis estimating the technological and economic effects of employing a standardized space silicon solar cell assembly was performed.

Microprocessor Seminar, phase 2

Workshop sessions and papers were devoted to various aspects of microprocessor and large scale integrated circuit technology. Presentations were made on advanced LSI developments for high reliability military and NASA applications. Microprocessor testing techniques were discussed, and test data were presented. High reliability procurement specifications were also discussed.

The ultraviolet spectra of Alpha Aquilae and Alpha Canis Minoris

Scans of Alpha Aql (A7 IV, V) and Alpha CMi (F5 IV-V) obtained with the Copernicus satellite spectrometer over the wavelength range from 2100 to 3200 A are presented along with a spectrum of the integrated solar disk over the same range procured during a calibrated rocket flight. About 1500 fairly strong absorption lines in the Alpha CMi spectrum between 2400 and 2961 A are identified by comparison with a solar atlas and by using a theoretical spectrum synthesized from a blanketed LTE model with an effective temperature of 6500 K and a surface gravity of 10,000 cm/sec per sec. The Mg II resonance doublet at 2795.528 and 2802.704 A is found to be present in all three stars together with a discontinuity at 2635 A due to Fe II, Fe I, Cr I, and Mn II. It is concluded that the Mg II resonance lines and the 2635-A continuum break would be the best spectral features for estimating the redshift of a galaxy observed at low resolution provided the redshift is not less than about 0.75.

The application of high density tape recording to image processing

The Image Processing Facility at Goddard Space Flight Center has the requirement to move volumes of digital data (100 billion data bits per day) that exceed the capacity of conventional computer tape. This paper presents the requirements for a high-density digital tape recorder compatible with conventional computer systems. The steps leading to the formulation of these requirements are described. The use and interaction of the recorder with the various elements in the facility are treated. The formulation of the requirements resulted in the selection of a tape transport modified for digital serial-in, serial-out operation. This selection followed a competitive procurement action.

Coaxial isolator has versatile interface

Approach increases system-packaging flexibility. Isolators are constructed with removable connectors that can be changed to meet user's requirements. Technique reduces development scheduling problems. Isolators can be procured before package design is firm and then readily reconfigured to meet final design requirements. Changes to existing designs to incorporate removable connectors are minimal. Small adapter plates increase size modestly; weight increase is negligible.

Extended performance solar electric propulsion thrust system study. Volume 1: Executive summary

Several thrust system design concepts were evaluated and compared using the specifications of the most advanced 30 cm engineering model thruster as the technology base. The extensions in thruster performance required for the Halley's comet mission were defined and alternative thrust system concepts were designed. Confirmation testing and analysis of thruster and power-processing components were performed, and the feasibility of satisfying extended performance requirements was verified. A baseline design was selected from the alternatives considered, and the design analysis and documentation were refined. A program development plan was formulated that outlines the work structure considered necessary for developing, qualifying, and fabricating the flight hardware for the baseline thrust system within the time frame of a project to rendezvous with Halley's comet. An assessment was made of the costs and risks associated with a baseline thrust system as provided to the mission project under this plan. Critical procurements and interfaces were identified and defined. Results are presented.

Study to develop improved fire resistant aircraft passenger seat materials, phase 1

The procurement and testing of a wide range of candidate materials is reported. Improved fire resistant nonmetallic materials were subjected to tests to evaluate their thermal characteristics, such as burn, smoke generation, heat release rate and toxicity. In addition, candidate materials were evaluated for mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties. Other properties considered included safety, comfort, durability and maintainability. The fiscal year 1977 and the projected 1980 cost data were obtained for aircraft seat materials.

Letter to Don Fuqua on space shuttle commitment, 12 April 1977

NASA budget committments for the Space Shuttle program are delineated, estimating $6.816 billion (FY 1978 dollars) for the design, development, test and evaluation phase of operations. Current estimates for refurbishment of Orbiters 101 and 102 and procurement of Orbiters 103, 104, and 105 amount to $1.988 billion. Ground support equipment costs are estimated to be an additional $432 million.

The 26-meter S-X Conversion Project

The 26-meter S-X conversion project provides for the conversion of an existing 26-meter S-band subnet to a 34-meter S- and X-band subnet. The subnet chosen for conversion consists of the following stations: DSS 12 near Barstow, DSS 44 in Australia, and DSS 62 in Spain. The main subsystems effected by this project are the antenna mechanical, antenna microwave, and receiver-exciter. In addition to these, there are many project-related electronic equipments that have been added to the existing station equipment. The major subsystems are essentially through the design stage with the antenna mechanical subsystem completed through detail design with procurement in process.

Guidelines for the selection and application of tantalum electrolytic capacitors in highly reliable equipment

Guidelines are given for the selection and application of three types of tantalum electrolytic capacitors in current use in the design of electrical and electronic circuits for space flight missions. In addition, the guidelines supplement requirements of existing military specifications used in the procurement of capacitors. A need exists for these guidelines to assist designers in preventing some of the recurring, serious problems experienced with tantalum electrolytic capacitors in the recent past. The three types of capacitors covered by these guidelines are; solid, wet foil, and tantalum cased wet slug.

SESAME/Environmental Research Laboratories

The Environmental Research Laboratories (ERL) have been designated as the basic research group of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). ERL performs an integrated program of research and research services directed toward understanding the geophysical environment, protecting the environment, and improving the forecasting ability of NOAA. Twenty-four laboratories located throughout the United States comprise ERL. The Project SESAME (Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment) Planning Office is a project office within ERL. SESAME is conceived as a joint effort involving NOAA, NASA, NSF, and the atmospheric science community to lay the foundation for improved prediction of severe convective storms. The scientific plan for SESAME includes a phased buildup of analysis, modeling, instrumentation development and procurement, and limited-scale observational activities.

TRAN*STAR 2 evaluation for NOAA data buoy office, part A

The capability of the TRAN*STAR 2 receiver equipment utilizing the U.S. Navy Navigation Satellite System to provide reliable position locations with reasonable accuracy and frequency was evaluated. Two receivers, an antenna, and a test set were procured, and position fix data collected at NSTL from a fixed known location during the months of May and June. The data were processed through a computer program and analyzed. The results of the evaluation are summarized.

JAN transistor and diode characterization test program: JANTX diode 1N759A

The necessary data to create a new class of specifications was the objective of this characterization program. Sample selection was made according to the following criteria: (1) manufacturer or qualified distributor; (2) two vendors; and (3) two date codes. The general guidelines for procurement were two QPL vendors, JAN or JANTX, and two manufacturing lots, 27 from each lot. All data were acquired with three digit accuracy. The data processing and calculation of statistical parameters were performed by the Tektronix computer system using 4 digit display.
