Microbes in Microgravity: Animated Educational Videos

Despite the fact that space sciences and biology are both subjects known to inspire students in STEM, the field at the intersection of those subjects-- space biology-- is rarely covered in school curricula. Space Biology gains importance by the day, as NASA launches deep-space missions and private companies initiate the launch of their own orbital space stations. For these reasons, we wanted to inspire students to consider studying biology in space by creating short, informational videos to introduce the topic. Our videos, designed for high school and college students, are focused on microbiology and include four distinct topics: the importance of studying microbes in space, the conditions they experience, how microbes experience microgravity, and how these conditions are simulated on Earth. We hope that space microbiologists use these videos to share the basics about their research, and we hope that students become inspired by the ideas presented in them.

The supernova: A stellar spectacle

The life of a star, the supernova, related objects and their importance in astronomy and science in general are discussed. Written primarily for science teachers of secondary school chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, the booklet contains a glossary, reference sources, suggested topics for discussion, and projects for individual or group assignment.

Improving science literacy and education through space life sciences

The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) encourages open involvement by scientists and the public at large in the Institute's activities. Through its Education and Public Outreach Program, the Institute is supporting national efforts to improve Kindergarten through grade twelve (K-12) and undergraduate education and to communicate knowledge generated by space life science research to lay audiences. Three academic institution Baylor College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine and Texas A&M University are designing, producing, field-testing, and disseminating a comprehensive array of programs and products to achieve this goal. The objectives of the NSBRI Education and Public Outreach program are to: promote systemic change in elementary and secondary science education; attract undergraduate students--especially those from underrepresented groups--to careers in space life sciences, engineering and technology-based fields; increase scientific literacy; and to develop public and private sector partnerships that enhance and expand NSBRI efforts to reach students and families. c 2001. Obesity-related cardiovascular risk factors: intervention recommendations to decrease adolescent obesity

The incidence of adolescent obesity is increasing dramatically in the United States with associated risks of hypertension, adverse lipid profiles, and Type II diabetes. Unless reversed, this trend predicts an epidemic of adult cardiovascular disease. Interventions at home, at school, and in the community are required to empower teens to increase physical activity and to modify eating habits. This article describes assessment for obesity-related health problems as well as scientific guidelines and research-based intervention strategies to decrease obesity in adolescents.

ExMASS: A viable model for authentic student-scientist research partnerships

The Exploration of the Moon and Asteroids by Secondary Students (ExMASS) program provides students the opportunity to conduct authentic, student-led, open-inquiry research with assistance from their teacher and a scientist. One goal of the program is to enhance participants’ attitudes toward science. Most students enter the ExMASS program with positive attitudes toward science. However, the attitude survey developed for ExMASS measured small but statistically significant increases in attitudes. This paper discusses the ExMASS program, an attitude towards science survey designed for the program’s specific audience, and the results of statistical analyses of the survey. The validity of the attitudes survey was tested with an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The results of the EFA revealed two salient factors measured by the survey: 1) Personal Importance of Science and 2) Importance of Science to Society. A reliability analysis revealed a Cronbach alpha value of 0.89. Paired t-tests revealed statistically significant differences in students’ attitudes before and after the program. For Factor 1, participants’ before scores were statistically significantly lower than their post scores, t(88) = 3.16, p<0.05. For Factor 2, participants’ before scores were statistically significantly lower than their post scores, t(88) = 4.47, p<0.05. ExMASS has been shown to be a practical model for programs designed to increase high school student attitudes toward science. Building Identity and Community for Early Career Professionals in the Emerging Field of Astrobiology

To support training and foster retention in the emerging field of astrobiology, NASA has funded opportunities for graduate students and early career scientists to develop a community, foster interdisciplinarity, increase confidence, and showcase career options. The design of these opportunities builds on research on factors that increase retention, including feeling competent, having autonomy and a sense of purpose, having a sense of identity, and being connected to others in the field. Findings are reported from retrospective studies of two NASA career-building opportunities, the Astrobiology Graduate Conference and the International Astrobiology Summer School held in Santander, Spain. We present evidence that attendees gain confidence by presenting to, and working with, their peers, and feel competent to express their ideas and interests and build relationships in the field that continue after the experiences. Many say that they feel less isolated and go on to present or publish with colleagues they meet. Their career options also expand by meeting potential colleagues from different disciplines. Based on the findings, participating in either of these long-running programs shows clear positive impact on early career astrobiology professionals.

Renal function and water balance

Routine urinalyses, including microscopic examination, were performed periodically. Protein, sugar, and pH were determined using Hema-Combistix reagent strips manufactured by the Ames Company. When the presence of albumin was suspected from a doubtful reaction of the reagent strip, the sulfasalicylic acid turbidity test for protein was also done. Likewise, to rule out a false positive reaction for glucose, the presence or absence of the latter was also determined using Clinitest Reagent Tablets (Ames). Specific gravity was determined using an urinometer, and acetate with Acetest Tablets (Ames Company). Serum and urinary creatinine clearance were determined once every three days. Methods used in all of the above tests were taken from standard Navy laboratory manuals published by the U. S. Naval Medical School, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.
