Separation of gold from irradiated actinide material utilizing a 2- thenoyltrifluoroacetone extraction resin

Post-detonation nuclear forensics capabilities depend on the ability to rapidly isolate radionuclides to improve measurement quality. In this work an extraction chromatography resin was developed utilizing the extractants thenoyltrifluoroacetone and 1-octanol supported on Eichrom prefilter resin. Here the resin was tested in nitric and hydrochloric acid matrices. In nitric acid matrices the resin is able to extract zirconium, while in hydrochloric acid matrices it is possible to extract iron and gallium. In all acid conditions tested gold is retained but can be removed from the column with a 10% thiourea rinse.

Distributed sustainable metals production: opportunities for intensifying separations & alternative feedstocks

Meeting the increased demand for rare earth elements and beyond primary mined ore. Secondary sources like phosphogypsum, coal fly ash, used nuclear fuel, and electronic waste are concentrated sources of critical minerals. One strategy for a resilient supply chain is to decentralize sourcing and hydrometallurgical processing of metals. Rotating packed beds (RPBs) for solid-phase extraction and liquid-liquid extraction are gaining momentum for their ability to increase process throughput by 5-10x the state of the art. In conclusion, this review discusses advances in hydrometallurgical RPB processes and opportunities for implementation in distributed metals production.

Separation of life stages within anaerobic fungi (Neocallimastigomycota) highlights differences in global transcription and metabolism

Anaerobic gut fungi of the phylum Neocallimastigomycota are microbes proficient in valorizing low-cost but difficult-to-breakdown lignocellulosic plant biomass. Characterization of different fungal life stages and how they contribute to biomass breakdown are critical for biotechnological applications, yet we lack foundational knowledge about the transcriptional, metabolic, and enzyme secretion behavior of different life stages of anaerobic gut fungi: zoospores, germlings, immature thalli, and mature zoosporangia. A Miracloth-based technique was developed to enrich cell pellets with zoospores - the free-swimming, flagellated, young life stage of anaerobic gut fungi. By contrast, fungal mats contained relatively more vegetative, encysted, mature sporangia that form films. Global gene expression profiles were compared from two sample types (zoospore-enriched cell pellets vs. mature mats) harvested from the anaerobic gut fungal strain Neocallimastix californiae G1. Despite cultures being grown on glucose, the fungal zoospore-enriched samples were transcriptionally primed to encounter plant matter substrate, as evidenced by upregulation of catabolic carbohydrate-active enzymes and putative carbohydrate transporters. Furthermore, we report significant differential gene expression for gene annotation groups, including putative secondary metabolites and transcription factors. Understanding global gene expression differences between the fungal zoospore-enriched cells and mature fungi aid in characterizing fungal development, unmasking gene function, and guiding cultivation conditions and engineering targets to promote enzyme secretion.

Temporal and spatial separations between spin glass and short-range order

Broken-symmetry-induced order parameters account for many phenomena in physics. For spin glasses, this framework dictates the theoretical construction, whereas experiments have only established dynamical behaviors but not the physical entity. Experimental techniques have limitations when the spin glass is probed as an isolated state. Here, we create an evolution from a long-range order using well-controlled non-magnetic substitution on a sublattice. Neutron magnetic diffuse scattering of pico-second timescale reveals that the dynamics of short- and long-range order formation are not affected by disorder, but their spatial ranges are. Across all specimens, the inflection point of spin correlation length’s temperature dependence fully matches with the peak in heat capacity, while spin glass can freeze at millisecond timescale either above or below this characteristic temperature of spin-order formation. Our results identify the spin glass as single, uncorrelated spins at domain walls between spin clusters, and an uncorrelated coexistence of the two.

Amine functionalized supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) for CO 2 /N 2 separation

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing aprotic N-heterocyclic anion ionic liquids (AHA ILs) in an inorganic inert support, exhibit CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity values as high as 640 at 35.0 °C and 0.03 bar CO 2 , which represents conditions similar to post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) from a natural gas power plant. A Fickian model fit to the experimental data estimates CO 2 permeability at direct air capture (DAC) conditions of 10,400 barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity of 4000 for the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]). The most important criterion for high selectivity is a large equilibrium constant for binding between the IL and CO 2 , which results in high CO 2 solubility. ILs with smaller molar volumes and with no fluoroalkyl chains enhance N 2 rejection. As a result, low viscosity and high IL molar density also enhance CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity and CO 2 permeance.

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) with exceptional selectivity and permeability for dilute CO 2 separations

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing phosphonium ionic liquids with aprotic N-heterocyclic anions (AHA ILs) in an inert inorganic support, were tested under both dry and humidified (40 % RH) mixed-gas conditions down to 420 ppm CO 2 in N 2 at 35 °C. In the dry case, the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]) exhibited mixed-gas CO 2 permeabilities and CO 2 /N 2 permeability selectivities as high as 26,800 barrer and 7,000, respectively. In the presence of humidity, the CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity increased to 49,100 barrer and 13,200, respectively, and these are the highest reported combination in the literature. Humidity amplifies CO 2 permeabilities and CO 2 /N 2 permeability selectivities through increases in CO 2 capacity due to bicarbonate formation and through faster mobility of the mobile carrier from decreased viscosity. Furthermore, N 2 permeability stayed roughly invariant in the presence of humidity, likely from competing effects of viscosity reduction and lower N 2 solubility.
