Pattern generator circuit for high-speed pulse generation

A pattern generator circuit includes a high-speed shift register and a non-overlap generator. The shift register is programmable to produce a pulse train of pulses having a defined pulse duration and a defined pulse-to-pulse interval. The non-overlap generator deserializes the incoming pulse train, and it produces a time-separated reset pulse based on the pulse train. The shift register is configured to permit the pulse durations and pulse-to-pulse interval to be selected arbitrarily over specified ranges in increments of a basic time unit that depends on the oscillator period.

Controlling the operating speed of stages of an asynchronous pipeline

An asynchronous pipeline includes a first stage and one or more second stages. A controller provides control signals to the first stage to indicate a modification to an operating speed of the first stage. The modification is determined based on a comparison of a completion status of the first stage to one or more completion statuses of the one or more second stages. In some cases, the controller provides control signals indicating modifications to an operating voltage applied to the first stage and a drive strength of a buffer in the first stage. Modules can be used to determine the completion statuses of the first stage and the one or more second stages based on the monitored output signals generated by the stages, output signals from replica critical paths associated with the stages, or a lookup table that indicates estimated completion times.

The Role of Competitions in Speeding Energy-Efficient Technology Development and Adoption

This conference paper, which will be submitted for publication in the 2020 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, describes competition approaches used by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office (BTO) and other government agencies to encourage the development and adoption of innovative new energy-efficient, high-performing products while spurring external competition to maximize limited resources. The competition model helps to disrupt traditional thinking and introduce, expand, and evolve what’s possible within limited resource conditions. DOE BTO has sponsored technology competitions, including campaigns, challenges, prizes, and technology procurements to speed the uptake of more efficient refrigerators, clothes washers, air conditioners, and many types of highly efficient lighting technologies, including compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diode LED-based home and office luminaires, replacement lamps, and street lighting. In this paper, we will draw upon the technology competition frameworks employed by DOE BTO to support ongoing research and development efforts to illustrate the differences between the approaches and to identify which type is likely to be the most effective in a given technology status and market context. We’ll also share examples of the various technology competition types and results. A question-and-answer table helps readers compare and contrast the four competition types. The paper concludes with a summary of lessons learned from past DOE BTO competitions. The paper will be available in the ACEEE 2020 Summer Study proceedings and a related presentation will be given at the conference.

Devices and methods for increasing the speed and efficiency at which a computer is capable of modeling a plurality of random walkers using a particle method

A method for increasing a speed or energy efficiency at which a computer is capable of modeling a plurality of random walkers. The method includes defining a virtual space in which a plurality of virtual random walkers will move among different locations in the virtual space. The method also includes either assigning a corresponding set of ringed neurons in a spiking neural network to a corresponding virtual random walker, or assigning a corresponding set of ringed neurons to a point in the virtual space. Movement of a given virtual random walker is tracked by decoding differences between states of individual neurons in a corresponding given set of ringed neurons. A virtual random walk of the plurality of virtual random walkers is executed using the spiking neural network.

Achieving Single-Electron Sensitivity at Enhanced Speed in Fully-Depleted CCDs with Double-Gate MOSFETs

We introduce a new output amplifier for fully-depleted thick p-channel CCDs based on double-gate MOSFETs. The charge amplifier is an n-type MOSFET specifically designed and operated to couple the fully-depleted CCD with high charge-transfer efficiency. The junction coupling between the CCD and MOSFET channels has enabled high sensitivity, demonstrating sub-electron readout noise in one pixel charge measurement. We have also demonstrated the non-destructive readout capability of the device. Achieving single-electron and single-photon per pixel counting in the entire CCD pixel array has been made possible through the averaging of a small number of samples. We have demonstrated fully-depleted CCD readout with better performance than the floating diffusion and floating gate amplifiers available today, in both single and multisampling regimes, boasting at least six times the speed of floating gate amplifiers.

Flame Flashback Investigations in Hydrogen-Enriched Low Swirl Burner using High-Speed Hydroxyl Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence

Hydrogen/ Hydrogen-rich flame is a potential strategy to reduce carbon emissions for the development of next-generation lean premixed combustors. However, the higher flashback propensity with hydrogen-enrichment owing to faster chemical kinetics is one of the key challenges in existing natural gas turbine combustors. In this study, the fundamentals of stabilized flame dynamics and flashback events in a premixed low swirl burner (LSB) configuration are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based high-speed hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF). The LSB has an optically accessible pre-mixing tube allowing laser diagnostic investigation of flashback events. The inlet conditions are varied systematically with respect to pre-mixer velocities, flame equivalence ratio (ϕ), and hydrogen content and OH-PLIF characterization is performed in stable flame at 20 kHz repetition rate. An increase in flashback propensity is observed with increasing ϕ, hydrogen content, and decreasing V via detailed investigation of flame lift-off length (L) above the burner rim. Flashback ϕ investigations show an expected linearly increasing trend with decreasing hydrogen content and increasing V for each swirler studied and the results agree well with detailed L investigations in stable flame configuration. The propagating flame anchored likely on the back side of the perforated plate within 30-40 ms of the entrance forming the distorted conical flame front.

Flame Flashback Investigations in Hydrogen-Enriched Low Swirl Flames using High-Speed Hydroxyl (OH) Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence

This study reports flashback mechanism observed in hydrogen-enriched flames stabilized in a low swirl burner (LSB) at atmospheric pressure and temperature conditions. The fundamentals of hydrogen-rich stable flames and spatiotemporal investigation of flashback phenomena were observed experimentally using a high-repetition-rate nanosecond (ns)-duration hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF) diagnostic. Testing was conducted in an optically accessible pre-mixing section of LSB with inlet pre-mixing velocities from 5 to 10 m/s for methane and hydrogen (50 – 90% by mole) blends. Swirlers with two different turning angles, 26 and 33 degrees and three different perforated plate hole diameters, 1.08, 1.12 and 1.16 mm with measured swirl numbers varying from 0.43 to 0.49 were used. The flashback propensity showed dependence on the proximity of the lifted flame to the burner exit which was dependent on pre-mixer velocity, hydrogen content and equivalence ratio (ER). High-speed OH-PLIF images revealed lifted flames were first observed at low ER condition which is changed to M-shaped flame attached to burner rim with the increase in ER. Then, further increase in ER triggers flame flashback into the nozzle. Flashback occurred when burning occurs in the outer shear layer and the leading flame brush ingresses into the nozzle.

High-Speed OH-PLIF Diagnostics of Flame Flashback in Low Swirl Hydrogen-Enriched Flames

Hydrogen-enrichment is a potential strategy to reduce carbon emissions for the development of next-generation lean premixed combustors. However, the higher flashback propensity with hydrogen enrichment owing to the faster chemical kinetics is one of the key challenges in existing natural gas turbine combustors. The fundamentals of stabilized flame dynamics and flashback events in a premixed low swirl burner (LSB) configuration are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based high-speed hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF). Swirlers with two different turning angles, 26 and 33 and three different center-body hole diameters, 1.08, 1.12 and 1.16 mm with measured swirl numbers varying from 0.43 to 0.49 are tested in this study at atmospheric temperature and pressure inlet conditions. The inlet conditions are varied systematically with respect to pre-mixer velocities (V), flame equivalence ratio (ϕ) and hydrogen content (X_(H_2 )) for 50%-90% (H2, by mole) H2/ CH4 reactant mixtures and OH-PLIF characterization is performed in a stable flame at 20 kHz repetition rate. An increase in flashback propensity is observed with increasing ϕ, X_(H_2 ) and decreasing V via detailed investigation of flame lift-off length (L) above the burner rim.
