A Novel Three-Phase Isolated LLC and Non-Isolated LCL-T Resonant Converter for Fuel Cell Applications

In this paper, a novel three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter topologies are introduced for fuel cell applications. In order to improve the fuel cell DC/DC converter efficiency, the current amplitude should be reduced in the power stage components. Cascaded connections of fuel cell blocks through a controllable system enable using higher voltage amplitude and bring the current amplitude lower at the target power. In this way, power losses in the passive components can be reduced, and maximum energy transfer can be established, improving the DC/DC converter efficiency from the fuel cell to the load. The introduced new converter also achieves soft switching (ZVS), minimizing the switching losses in all input and output load conditions. The presented three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter systems, fed by three fuel cell modules with an output range of 190380 V, deliver 580−730 V at 450 kW maximum output power. The results reveal that the proposed systems have the advantage of reducing the size, volume, and weight and increasing the overall DC/DC converter system efficiency compared to the single-phase systems.

A Unified Off-Board Charger for Three-Phase Inductive and Single-Phase Conductive EV Charging

This paper presents a unified off-board charger integrating a three-phase inductive power transfer (IPT) system and a single-phase conductive (plug-in) charger for electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed charger shares a high-frequency inverter and an integrated magnetic structure that enables three operating modes: conductive charging, inductive charging, and simultaneous charging. The transmitter coils for the three-phase IPT and the high-frequency transformer windings for the conductive charger are arranged on a common ferrite pad while maintaining magnetic decoupling between the two power transfer paths. The proposed unified architecture effectively increases charger utilization and power density without a proportional increase in cost, weight, or volume. Finite-element analysis using Ansys Maxwell confirms negligible coupling between the inductive and conductive coils, and the extracted parameters are employed in PLECS simulations to verify the independent operation of each charging mode.

Power Layout Design of a GaN HEMTs-Based High-Power High-Efficiency Three-Level ANPC Inverter for 800 V DC Bus System

Multiple commutation paths exist for switching devices in a three-level active neutral point clamped (3L-ANPC) inverter operation based on the selected switching state and current direction. In addition, the capacitive coupling path of the nonswitching device is a key design aspect for enabling high voltage and high current operation of gallium nitride (GaN) switches in 3L-ANPC topology. A comprehensive study of the switching transient events of inner, outer, and clamping devices of 3L-ANPC is presented in this article. The commutation mechanisms for worst-case transient voltage overshoots (TVOs) are identified. A simplified equivalent circuit model is presented to determine the design criteria for the power layout structure's parasitic inductances. A power layout strategy satisfying the design criteria is then proposed using an insulated metal substrate power printed circuit board (PCB) to enable efficient high-power operation. The proposed design minimizes the commutation and capacitive coupling path inductances to 6 nH and 11.5 nH, respectively. This enables the fast switching operation of GaN HEMTs at 800 V dc, 36 A with a low TVO of 31% verified through experimental three-level double pulse test results. Experimental evaluation of a three-phase 3L-ANPC hardware prototype based on the proposed power layout shows 99% efficiency at 800 V, 9.5 kVA and 50 kHz switching frequency. The proposed design achieves a low case-to-ambient thermal resistance of 2.3 °C/W.

Three-Stage Adjusted Regression Forecasting for Software Defect Prediction

In this paper, a three-stage adjusted regression forecasting model is proposed to forecast the local regression model [6]. This is a growth curve approximation model that predicts the parameters for a future linear model based on a sliding window of previous linear models. The three stages of the model are as follows: • Initial fit: train regression models on a sliding window of the date and record model coefficients. • Prediction: fit new regression models to the coefficient lists and predict the value of the next coefficient. • Error correction: correct coefficient prediction error using the residual of the last point of the coefficient list and moving average. The resulting model from the multi-stage process is a forecast of the local regression model that represents the future window of data and is referred to as the predicted line. Results suggest the three-stage model demonstrates better prediction capability compared to existing solutions.

Interconnection of Three Single-Phase Feeders in North America Distribution Systems

This paper proposes a solution for maintaining power balance within all three phases at residential level during islanded mode of operation. Grid abnormalities can lead to isolating the residential microgrid from the main grid, and as a result, distributed generation (DG) units take the full responsibility of supplying local loads. However, in such condition, some phases might face the challenge of meeting local load demand due to the lack of enough power generation, resulting in voltage drop and frequency variation across household loads. In order to resolve this issue, the proposed method in this paper seamlessly interconnects all three single-phase feeders during islanded mode and forms a unified single-phase residential microgrid. Consequently, the load demands in all three phases are met, leading to enhanced voltage and frequency profiles. For this purpose, a seamless transition algorithm is defined which monitors the system condition in real time, and coordinates the operation of all inverter-based DG units in residential microgrid accordingly during transitions. Case study results are provided to verify the validity of proposed method.

1 kV, 10-kW SiC-Based Quadruple Active Bridge DCX Stage in a DC to Three-Phase AC Module for Medium-Voltage Grid Integration

Interfacing low voltage dc to medium voltage three-phase ac grid is often based on series-stackable modular converter architectures. To minimize energy storage requirements, it is advantageous to employ a quadruple active bridge (QAB) stage operating as a "dc transformer" in each stackable module. The QAB stage offers three isolated dc link voltages, which then allow for flexible stacking of three single-phase dc-to-ac inverter stages. Each of the module phases processes a pulsating power having a component at twice the line frequency. This presents a challenge in maintaining zero voltage switching (ZVS) on the secondary sides of the QAB during low-power portions of the line cycle. This article is focused on the design of the QAB stage. A detailed analysis of ZVS switching waveforms is presented, including effects of nonlinear device capacitances. It is shown how ZVS can be achieved at all times using a relatively small circulating current provided by the magnetizing inductance of the high-frequency transformer. Analytical expressions are given for the optimal values of the magnetizing inductance and the dead times of the QAB primary and secondary bridges. This approach is verified by experimental results on a 1 kV, 10-kW SiC-based prototype, demonstrating a relatively flat efficiency curve with a peak efficiency of 97.1% at 75% load.

Conditional Sixth-Harmonic Injection to Improve the Linear Modulation Range of Three-Phase Voltage-Source Converters

Overmodulation techniques are used to improve dc bus voltage utilization for three-phase voltage-source converters (VSCs), resulting in significant reduction in fundamental voltage gain. Conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques for three-phase VSCs cannot enhance the linear range of dc bus utilization by more than 15.5%. Here, in this letter, a conditional sixth-harmonic injection technique is introduced, which can theoretically improve the linear modulation range by up to 19.2% for three-phase ac systems without additional hardware components. Experimental validation of the proposed scheme is presented, with its performance compared against the conventional third-harmonic PWM technique.

Predicting microstructurally sensitive fatigue‐crack path in WE43 magnesium using high‐fidelity numerical modeling and three‐dimensional experimental characterization

Abstract Microstructurally small fatigue‐crack growth in polycrystalline materials is highly three‐dimensional due to sensitivity to local microstructural features (e.g., grains). One requirement for modeling microstructurally sensitive crack propagation is establishing the criteria that govern crack evolution, including crack deflection. Here, a high‐fidelity finite‐element modeling framework is used to assess the performance and validity of various crack‐growth criteria, including slip‐based metrics (e.g., fatigue‐indicator parameters), as potential criteria for predicting three‐dimensional crack paths in polycrystalline materials. The modeling framework represents cracks as geometrically explicit discontinuities and involves voxel‐based remeshing, mesh‐gradation control, and a crystal‐plasticity constitutive model. The predictions are compared to experimental measurements of WE43 magnesium samples subject to fatigue loading, for which three‐dimensional grain structures and fatigue‐crack surfaces were measured post‐mortem using near‐field high‐energy x‐ray diffraction microscopy and x‐ray computed tomography. Findings from this work are expected to improve the predictive capabilities of simulations involving microstructurally small fatigue‐crack growth in polycrystalline materials.

Associative nitrogen fixation linked with three perennial bioenergy grasses in field and greenhouse experiments

Abstract Associative nitrogen (N 2 )‐fixation (ANF) by bacteria in the root‐zone of perennial bioenergy grasses has the potential to replace or supplement N fertilizer and support sustainable production of biomass, but its application in marginal ecosystems requires further evaluation. In this study, we first combined both greenhouse and field experiments, to explore the N 2 fixation effects of three temperate feedstocks Miscanthus × giganteus (giant miscanthus, Freedom), Panicum virgatum (switchgrass, Alamo), and Saccharum sp. (energycane, Ho 02‐147). In field studies across three growing seasons, plant and soil pools of candidate feedstocks were partially composed of N derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa). Energycane, giant miscanthus, and switchgrass were estimated to derive >30%, %Ndfa. Greenhouse studies were also performed to trace isotopically labeled 15 N 2 into plant biomass and soil pools. Evidence for Ndfa was detected in all three feedstock grasses (using reference 15 N of soil, chicory, and sorghum, δ 15 N~+7.0). Isotopically labeled 15 N 2 was traced into biomass (during grass elongation stage) and soil pools. Extrapolation of rates during the 24 hr labeling period to 50 days estimated 30%–55% of plant Ndfa, with the greatest Ndfa for energycane. The findings of the field natural abundance and greenhouse 15 N 2 feeding experiments provided complementary evidence that perennial bioenergy grasses have the potential to support relatively high rates of ANF, and accumulate diazotroph‐derived N into biomass when grown on non‐fertilized soil.

Performance of three Trichogramma species as biocontrol agents on Spodoptera frugiperda eggs

Abstract Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most polyphagous and migratory pests posing a great threat to crops. The Trichogramma species (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) play an important role in dampening pest oscillations. In this study, we examined the performance of three egg parasitoids, T. chilonis , T. dendrolimi and T. pretiosum, to control S. frugiperda . Indoor experiments indicated significant differences in fecundity and female proportion between T. chilonis , T. dendrolimi and T. pretiosum . However, no significant differences were observed in developmental duration and female parasitic capacity. Field trials were carried out to clarify their control efficiency. Results showed that the parasitism rates of three parasitoids ranged from 10.7% to 31.4%, without significant differences. Moreover, field release of parasitoids resulted in significant decreases in damage rate (the ratio of infested plants) and damage index. A positive correlation was revealed between temperature (14.5–24.5 °C) and parasitism rate of T. chilonis . In contrast, the relative humidity (66% ~ 77%) did not affect their performance. Taken together, all three Trichogramma species can be used as potential agents to control S. frugiperda , which undoubtedly lays a solid foundation for their application.

The three cellulose synthase isoforms for secondary cell wall make specific contributions to microfibril synthesis

Cellulose is synthesized at the plasma membrane by the cellulose synthase complex, a structure that contains three distinct isoforms of the catalytic subunit, cellulose synthase A (CESA). The division into three subunits appears early in land plant evolution and is highly conserved, particularly for the secondary cell wall. However, what if any unique roles each isoform plays in the complex remain unclear. Here, we assessed the contributions of specific isoforms to microfibril synthesis. First, we expressed CESA isoforms of the primary cell wall or the moss Physcomitrium patens in Arabidopsis thaliana backgrounds missing a secondary cell wall CESA. While the primary cell wall isoforms rescued the cesa knockout phenotype with partial isoform specificity, those from the moss rescued with fewer restrictions. Then, we recreated various CESA missense mutations in all three of the secondary cell wall isoforms; while results are consistent with isoform specificity, they are difficult to interpret further without molecular structures. Finally, we show that catalytically inactive CESA isoforms restore growth and cellulose content in the corresponding knockout in an isoform-specific manner; along with partial rescue of the growth and cellulose content of the inflorescence stem, the replacement lines have fiber cells with partially disorganized microfibrils and secondary cell wall cellulose with narrow crystal width. Generally, effects were more pronounced in lines where CESA8 was inactivated compared with inactivating CESA4 or 7, which tended to have similar phenotypes to each other. Here, we account for these results with a model for cellulose synthase structure with the isoforms assigned specific localization within the cellulose synthase complex.

Three-dimensional visualization of nanoparticle lattices and multi-material frameworks

We report advances in nanoscale self-assembly have enabled the formation of complex nanoscale architectures. However, the development of self-assembly strategies toward bottom-up nanofabrication is impeded by challenges in revealing these structures volumetrically at the single-component level and with elemental sensitivity. Leveraging advances in nano-focused hard x-rays, DNA-programmable nanoparticle assembly, and nanoscale inorganic templating, we demonstrate nondestructive three-dimensional imaging of complexly organized nanoparticles and multimaterial frameworks. In a three-dimensional lattice with a size of 2 micrometers, we determined the positions of about 10,000 individual nanoparticles with 7-nanometer resolution, and identified arrangements of assembly motifs and a resulting multimaterial framework with elemental sensitivity. The real-space reconstruction permits direct three-dimensional imaging of lattices, which reveals their imperfections and interfaces and also clarifies the relationship between lattices and assembly motifs.

Measurements of angular distance and momentum ratio distributions in three-jet and $${\text {Z}}$$ + two-jet final states in $${\text {p}}{\text {p}}$$ collisions

Collinear (small-angle) and large-angle, as well as soft and hard radiations are investigated in three-jet and Z + two-jet events collected in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The normalized production cross sections are measured as a function of the ratio of transverse momenta of two jets and their angular separation. The measurements in the three-jet and Z + two-jet events are based on data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 8TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8fb -1 . The Z + two-jet events are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel of the Z boson. The three-jet measurement is extended to include $\sqrt {s}$=13TeV data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3fb -1 . The results are compared to predictions from event generators that include parton showers, multiple parton interactions, and hadronization. The collinear and soft regions are in general well described by parton showers, whereas the regions of large angular separation are often best described by calculations using higher-order matrix elements.

Precautions of Using Three-Electrode Configuration to Measure Electrode Overpotential in Solid Oxide Electrochemical Cells: Insights from Finite Element Modeling

Accurate determination of electrode overpotentials is essential to assess the performance of the electrode and understand the rate-limiting steps involved. Three-electrode configuration with the use of a reference electrode at a fixed potential is a standard way to measure overpotential of a specific electrode in liquid electrochemical systems. However, application of such three-electrode configuration to solid electrochemical cells for overpotential determination is not straightforward and requires extra caution. Here we report a theoretical Finite Element Analysis on the geometrical requirements for which the reference electrode can be applied to anode- or electrolyte-supported solid oxide button cells. The modeling results suggest that the symmetry of the working and counter electrodes is the key factor determining if a reference electrode is suitable to use. For anode-supported fuel cells with asymmetrical working and counter electrodes, reference electrode cannot be used under all circumstances. To use reference electrode for overpotential measurements, electrolyte-supported cells with symmetrical semicircular-shaped electrodes are preferred. A data processing procedure has also been presented to obtain the electrode overpotential from the measured potential using the three-electrode scheme in solid oxide electrochemical cells.

Three phase spectral interferometry for recording high dynamic range optical waveforms with <1 ps resolution over >2 ns records applied to closed-loop pulse shaping

Herein we demonstrate, to our knowledge, a novel spectral interferometry technique that simultaneously captures three spectral interferograms of a signal waveform with a reference pulse. The measured performance is robust to nonidealities and ambient drifts by implementing a precisely calibrated 3 × 3 polarization maintaining (PM) splitter that provides three phase shift differences nominally spaced 120° apart. The system can achieve long record length by implementing three, high resolution, virtually imaged phase array (VIPA) spectrometers. Here, we experimentally implement this technique and demonstrate the measurement of waveforms with >2ns of record while maintaining <1ps resolution.

Tomographic FLEET with a wedge array for multi-point three-component velocimetry

Femtosecond laser electronic excitation tagging (FLEET) velocimetry is an important diagnostic technique for seedless velocimetry measurements particularly in supersonic and hypersonic flows. Typical FLEET measurements feature a single laser line and camera system to achieve one-component velocimetry along a line, although some multiple-spot and multiple-component configurations have been demonstrated. In this work, tomographic imaging is used to track the three-dimensional location of many FLEET spots. A quadscope is used to combine four unique views onto a single high-speed image intensifier and camera. Tomographic reconstructions of the FLEET emission are analyzed for three-component velocimetry from multiple FLEET spots. Glass wedges are used to create many (nine) closely spaced FLEET spots with less than 10% transmission losses. These developments lead to a significant improvement in the dimensionality and spatial coverage of a FLEET instrument with some increases in experimental complexity and data processing. Multiple-point three-component FLEET velocimetry is demonstrated in an underexpanded jet.

The LAKE model input dataset for three Arctic lakes

This dataset contains meteorological data collected for three Arctic lakes and compiled to satisfy input requirements of the LAKE 2.0 model. The dataset was generated to act as a benchmarking dataset for future model-data inter-comparisons. The LAKE 2.0 model simulates temperatures within the water later and the sedimentary layer of a lake. The LAKE2.0. is an open-source code and available to download via this weblike http://tesla.parallel.ru/Viktor/LAKE/-/wikis/LAKE-model (last visit July 14, 2021). The meteorological data are required to simulate the surface energy balance at the surface of a lake. This dataset includes a compilation of the meteorological data pulled from multiple data streams, including National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climate data, Circumarctic Lakes Observation Network (CALON) data, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) data. The data were compiled for three Arctic lakes: FoxDen (66.55877, -164.45670), Atqasuk (70.452497, -156.951984), and Toolik (68.63150, -149.60740). Each meteorological data is in comma-delimited format (file extension ‘.dat’) and includes eight columns: Temperature [K], Pressure [Pa], longwave downward radiation [W/m2], shortwave downward radiation [W/m2], “U” wind speed [m/s], ”V” wind speed [m/s], humidity [kg/kg], precipitation [m/s]. In addition to the meteorological data file, we included setup and driver files. The Toolik lake is the deepest out of three lakes and has inflowing and outflowing groundwater data. InflowOutflowREADME.txt has more information about inflow and outflow flies. The other two lakes are much shallower and modeled as a closed system (i.e. no water inflow or outflow).

Bootstrapping mixed correlators in three-dimensional cubic theories II

Conformal field theories (CFTs) with cubic global symmetry in 3D are relevant in a variety of condensed matter systems and have been studied extensively with the use of perturbative methods like the \varepsilon ε expansion. In an earlier work, we used the nonperturbative numerical conformal bootstrap to provide evidence for the existence of a previously unknown 3D CFT with cubic symmetry, dubbed “Platonic CFT”. In this work, we make further use of the numerical conformal bootstrap to perform a three-dimensional scan in the space of scaling dimensions of three low-lying operators. We find a three-dimensional isolated allowed region in parameter space, which includes both the 3D (decoupled) Ising model and the Platonic CFT. The essential assumptions on the spectrum of operators used to provide the isolated allowed region include the existence of a stress-energy tensor and the irrelevance of certain operators (in the renormalization group sense).
