A 20 Gbps Data Transmitting ASIC with PAM4 for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design principle and test results of a data transmitting ASIC, GBS20, for particle physics experiments. The goal of GBS20 will be an ASIC that employs two serializers each from the 10.24 Gbps lpGBT SerDes, sharing the PLL also from lpGBT. A PAM4 encoder plus a VCSEL driver will be implemented in the same die to use the same clock system, eliminating the need of CDRs in the PAM4 encoder. This way the transmitter module, GBT20, developed using the GBS20 ASIC, will have the exact lpGBT data interface and transmission protocol, with an output up to 20.48 Gbps over one fiber. With PAM4 embedded FPGAs at the receiving end, GBT20 will halve the fibers needed in a system and better use the input bandwidth of the FPGA. A prototype, GBS20v0 is fabricated using a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology. This prototype has two serializers and a PAM4 encoder sharing the lpGBT PLL, but no user data input. An internal PRBS generator provides data to the serializers. GBS20v0 is tested barely up to 20.48 Gbps. With lessons learned from this prototype, we are designing the second prototype, GBS20v1, that will have 16 user data input channels each at 1.28 Gbps. We present the design concept of the GBS20 ASIC and the GBT20 module, the preliminary test results, and lessons learned from GBS20v0 and the design of GBS20v1 which will be not only a test chip but also a user chip with 16 input data channels.

Near Optimality of Matched Filter Detection for Cyclic Prefix Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum

Abstract—Cyclic Prefix Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum -DSSS) has been presented as a potential solution for ultrareliable low latency communications (URLLC) and massive machine type communication (mMTC), where the CP-DSSS waveform would operate as a secondary network at the same frequencies as the primary network but at much lower SNR. In this paper, we show that when operating in the low SNR regime, CP-DSSS achieves near optimum performance when using a matched filter (MF) detector at the receiver. Time reversal (TR) precoding at the transmitter is also analyzed. These results also carry forward into multi-antenna scenarios where array gain is preserved. With nearly optimal performance of MF detection, CP-DSSS can be implemented with simple device transceiver structures, reducing per-unit cost for massively deployed networks.

Enhancing obfuscation of digital content through use of linear error correction codes

Technologies related to enhancing security of digital content are described. Linear error correction codes (LECCs) are employed for dual purposes: 1) to obfuscate digital content; and 2) to verify integrity of the digital content. A transmitter computing system obfuscates digital content based upon an obfuscation protocol, wherein the obfuscated digital content includes an LECC. A receiver computing system deobfuscates the digital content by performing the inverse of the obfuscation protocol.

System and method for liquid crystal display system incorporating wire grid polarizers for large scale and large volume stereolithography

The present disclosure relates to a liquid crystal display (LCD) system. The system in one example has a light source for generating unpolarized light, and an LCD screen arranged in a path of transmittance of the unpolarized light. First and second wire grid polarizers are arranged adjacent to the LCD screen and each have a plurality of nano-scale wires, with the first and second wire grid polarizers have differing polarizations. A pitch of each of the nano-scale wires is no larger than one-third a wavelength of the unpolarized light from the light source. The wire grid polarizers create, in connection with operation of the LCD screen, a 2D light mask suitable for initiating the polymerization of an optically curable material.

Wireless power transfer to biomedical implants

Various examples are provided for wireless power transfer to implants. In one example, a system includes a radio frequency (RF) power source and a transmitter (TX) array comprising an excitation coil and resonant coils distributed about the excitation coil. The TX array can transfer power from the RF power source to a biomedical implant inserted below a skin surface of a subject when the TX array is positioned on the skin surface adjacent to the biomedical implant. A receiver (RX) coil of the biomedical implant can inductively couple with the TX array for the power. The resonant coils can allow power transfer when the RX coil is not aligned with the excitation coil.

RF signature detection for waveguide deformation

A radio frequency (RF) based waveguide health monitoring system is disclosed. The system employs an RF transmitter for launching a probe RF waveform into a waveguide. Reflections, etc., from the interior of the waveguide of the probe RF waveform create a signature RF waveform, with a health RF receiver receiving this resultant signature RF waveform. A health processing system analyzes the signature RF waveform, and when it detects a change indicative of a deformation of the waveguide, generates a warning signal. This change may be due to bends, flexes, vibrations (or changes in vibrations), or separations of the waveguide. The system may have low frequency, high frequency, or high frequency imaging modes. The system may employ a high-power probe RF waveform, thereby enabling a wireless charging system with power RF receivers located along the length of the waveguide providing additional functionality.

High-sensitivity gas-mapping 3D imager and method of operation

Measurement apparatuses and methods are disclosed for generating high-precision and -accuracy gas concentration maps that can be overlaid with 3D topographic images by rapidly scanning one or several modulated laser beams with a spatially-encoded transmitter over a scene to build-up imagery. Independent measurements of the topographic target distance and path-integrated gas concentration are combined to yield a map of the path-averaged concentration between the sensor and each point in the image. This type of image is particularly useful for finding localized regions of elevated (or anomalous) gas concentration making it ideal for large-area leak detection and quantification applications including: oil and gas pipeline monitoring, chemical processing facility monitoring, and environmental monitoring.

Autonomous sense and guide machine learning system

A system for generating a machine learning system to generate guidance information based on locations of objects is provided. The system accesses training data that includes training time-of-arrival (“TOA”) information of looks and guidance information for each look. The guidance information is based on a training collection of object locations. The TOA of a look represents, for each object location of a training collection of object locations, times between signals transmitted by transmitters and return signals received by receivers. The return signals represent signals reflected from an object at the object location. The system trains a machine learning system using the training data wherein the machine learning system inputs TOA information and outputs guidance information.
