A remote computer graphics user at General Motors

The successful use of automotive body surface design data is described. This data has been originally created elsewhere in GM's two large computer graphics systems of CADANCE and Fisher Graphics. As a supplier exterior lighting components, radiator grilles, energy absorbing soft faced bumper systems, and other associated items, Guide has become most dependent on the corporate computer graphics systems to supply accurate car body styling and sheet metal surfacing information for the design of their products. The presentation includes the origin and transfer of design data to a remote user site; its use in the design of their products; and the ultimate production of detailed drawings, N/C punched tapes, and subsequent downstream transfers of detailed part data to a turnkey system for tool design purposes.

A corrosion control manual for rail rapid transit

In 1979, during the planning stage of the Metropolitan Dade County Transit System, the need was expressed for a corrosion control manual oriented to urban rapid transit system use. This manual responds to that need. The objective of the manual is to aid rail rapid transit agencies by providing practical solutions to selected corrosion problems. The scope of the manual encompasses corrosion problems of the facilities of rapid transit systems: structures and tracks, platforms and stations, power and signals, and cars. It also discusses stray electric current corrosion. Both design and maintenance solutions are provided for each problem. Also included are descriptions of the types of corrosion and their causes, descriptions of rapid transit properties, a list of corrosion control committees and NASA, DOD, and ASTM specifications and design criteria to which reference is made in the manual. A bibliography of papers and excerpts of reports and a glossary of frequency used terms are provided.

Audio direct broadcast satellites

Satellite sound broadcasting is, as the name implies, the use of satellite techniques and technology to broadcast directly from space to low-cost, consumer-quality receivers the types of sound programs commonly received in the AM and FM broadcast bands. It would be a ubiquitous service available to the general public in the home, in the car, and out in the open.

Computer-aided surface representation and design

New methods for representing and approximating three and four dimensional surfaces were created. These schemes are the core of our forthcoming Surface Software Package. Surfaces are understood adequately only through the use of dynamic computer graphics; therefore, graphics capability is also included. The numerous applications of surface methods include modeling physical phenomena (e.g., combustion) and designing objects (e.g., airplanes and cars).

Investigation of image enhancement techniques for the development of a self-contained airborne radar navigation system

This study was devoted to an investigation of the feasibility of applying advanced image processing techniques to enhance radar image characteristics that are pertinent to the pilot's navigation and guidance task. Millimeter (95 GHz) wave radar images for the overwater (i.e., offshore oil rigs) and overland (Heliport) scenario were used as a data base. The purpose of the study was to determine the applicability of image enhancement and scene analysis algorithms to detect and improve target characteristics (i.e., manmade objects such as buildings, parking lots, cars, roads, helicopters, towers, landing pads, etc.) that would be helpful to the pilot in determining his own position/orientation with respect to the outside world and assist him in the navigation task. Results of this study show that significant improvements in the raw radar image may be obtained using two dimensional image processing algorithms. In the overwater case, it is possible to remove the ocean clutter by thresholding the image data, and furthermore to extract the target boundary as well as the tower and catwalk locations using noise cleaning (e.g., median filter) and edge detection (e.g., Sobel operator) algorithms.

An advanced generation land mobile satellite system and its critical technologies

A conceptual design for a Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) for the 1990s is presented. LMSS involves small tranceivers accessing satellites directly, with ground reception through small car-top antennas. The satellite would have a large antenna and blanket coverage areas in the UHF. The call may originate from a home, be carried by wire to a gateway, transmitted to satellite on the S-band, converted to UHF on the satellite, and transmitted to the vehicle. The system design is constrained by the number of users in an area during the busiest hours, Shuttle storage, controllability factors, and the total area served. A 55-m antenna has been selected, with 87 spot beams and two 10 MHz UHF bands in the 806-890 MHz band. A 17 dB interbeam isolation level is required, implying that sufficient sub-bands can be generated to assure 8265 total channels. The mobile satellite (MSAT) would have an 83 m mast lower segment, a 34 m upper segment, and a second, 10 m antenna made of a deployable mesh. Various antenna function modes are considered.

Observations of two peculiar emission objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Ultraviolet and visual wavelength spectra were obtained of two peculiar emission objects, Henize S63 and Sanduleak's star in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Previously not observed in the near- or far-ultraviolet, both objects exhibit strong permitted and semiforbidden line emissions. Estimates based on the absolute continuum flux of the hot companion star in Hen S63 indicate that it rivals the luminosity of the carbon star primary. The emission-line profile structure in both objects does not suggest Wolf-Rayet type emission. Carbon in Sanduleak's star (LMC anonymous) is conspicuously absent, while N V, semiforbidden N IV, and semiforbidden N III dominate the UV emission-line spectrum. Nitrogen is overabundant with respect to carbon and oxygen in both objects. The large overabundance of nitrogen in Sanduleak's star suggests evidence for CNO processes material similar to that seen in Nu Car.

IUE and ground-based observations of the Hubble-Sandage variables in M31 and M33

Ultraviolet spectra were obtained from the International Ultraviolet Explorer for the brightest Hubble-Sandage (H-S) variables in M31 and M33. The ultraviolet fluxes were then used in combination with ground-based visual and infrared photometry to determine the energy distributions, luminosities, and temperatures of these stars. When corrected for interstellar extinction, the integrated energy distributions yield the total luminosities and blackbody temperatures of the H-S variables. The resulting bolometric magnitudes and temperatures confirm that these peculiar stars are indeed very luminous, hot stars. They occupy the same regions of the bolometric magnitude vs temperature diagram as Eta Car and P Cyg in the Galaxy and S Dor in the LMC.

New perspectives for advanced automobile diesel engines

Computer simulation results are presented for advanced automobile diesel engine performance. Four critical factors for performance enhancement were identified: (1) part load preheating and exhaust gas energy recovery, (2) fast heat release combustion process, (3) reduction in friction, and (4) air handling system efficiency. Four different technology levels were considered in the analysis. Simulation results are compared in terms of brake specific fuel consumption and vehicle fuel economy in km/liter (miles per gallon). Major critical performance sensitivity areas are: (1) combustion process, (2) expander and compressor efficiency, and (3) part load preheating and compound system. When compared to the state of the art direct injection, cooled, automobile diesel engine, the advanced adiabatic compound engine concept showed the unique potential of doubling the fuel economy. Other important performance criteria such as acceleration, emissions, reliability, durability and multifuel capability are comparable to or better than current passenger car diesel engines.

X-rays from Eta Carinae

X-ray observations of Eta Car obtained with the high-resolution imager and solid-state spectrometer of the Einstein observatory are reported and interpreted in terms of a two-shell model. A soft component with temperature 5 million K is located in the expanding outer shell, and the hard core component with temperature 80 million K is attributed to the interaction of a high-velocity stellar wind from the massive central object with the inner edge of a dust shell. Model calculations based on comparison with optical and IR data permit estimation of the mass of the outer shell (0.004 solar mass), the mass of the dust shell (3 solar mass), and the total shell expansion energy (less than 2 x 10 to the 49th ergs).

Absolute two-photon excitation cross-sections in NO

A technique has been developed which allows the determination of a two-photon absorption cross-section to be made relative to the Raman scattering cross-section in nitrogen. Spatial and temporal effects associated with the lasers are ratioed out to give a result independent of laser parameters. The necessary theory to extract a cross-section from the measured ratio of a Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) signal in N2 to a four-wave mixing signal in NO has been developed. The technique has been demonstrated on the R(22) + S(12) (J-double-prime = 9 1/2) line in NO and a cross-section of (2.9 + or - 1.8) x 10 to the -49th (cm to the 4th power)-s was determined. This technique appears to be applicable to a number of other diatomic molecules.

Hand-Held Electronic Gap-Measuring Tools

Repetitive measurements simplified by tool based on LVDT operation. With fingers in open position, Gap-measuring tool rests on digital readout instrument. With fingers inserted in gap, separation alters inductance of linear variable-differential transformer in plastic handle. Originally developed for measuring gaps between surface tiles of Space Shuttle orbiter, tool reduces measurement time from 20 minutes per tile to 2 minutes. Also reduces possibility of damage to tiles during measurement. Tool has potential applications in mass production; helps ensure proper gap dimensions in assembly of refrigerator and car doors and also used to measure dimensions of components and to verify positional accuracy of components during progressive assembly operations.

Advanced Automotive Diesel Assessment Program, executive summary

The objectives of this analytical study were: to select one advanced automotive diesel engine (AAD) concept which would increase the tank mileage of a 3,000 pound passenger car from the present 35 mpg to at least 52 mpg; to identify long term component research and development work required to bring the selected concept to fruition; and to prepare a development strategy that will bring the selected concept to a prototype testing phase. Cummins Engine Company has completed this study. The selected concept is a 4 stroke cycle, direct injection, spark assisted, advanced adiabatic diesel engine with positive displacement compounding plus expander and part load air preheating. The engine does not use a liquid coolant nor liquid lubricants. It is a 4 cylinder, in-line, 77 mm bore x 77 mm stroke, 1.434 liters displacement engine weighing 300 lb, and rated at 70 BHP at 3000 rpm. Installation dimensions are 621 mm length x 589 mm width x 479 mm height (24.4 inch x 22 inch x 18.9 inch).

Crewstation design and validation

The central problem in crewstation design, that of optimizing the exchange of information between the human and machine components of a system is addressed. The CAR, CUBITS, GROUP, ABBREV, VRAS, and HOS programs, products of the Navy's Human Factors Engineering Technology Development program are all discussed. They are representative to the type of technology which was previously indicated as necessary to move crewstation design and validation to a higher lever of maturity, one which takes cognizance of the multivariate nature of the problems faced by the crewstation designer and has a far less dependence of the whims of personal or subjective opinion.

Triangular Berstein-bezier Patches, a Survey and New Results

Triangular Bernstein-Bezier patches are an alternative to the standard rectangular ones. They are maps of triangular domains into R cubed, where the patches are described by control nets similar to the rectangular case. One difference in the definition of surface normals at the patch corners: rectangular patches have inherent problems with so-called degenerate corners, i.e., edges collapsing into one point. Triangular patches do not have these problems. Since triangular shapes arise rather frequently in the design of complicated surfaces (e.g., interior car body panels), it seems that for such surfaces triangular patches are a promising addition to the usually employed rectangular patches. Another major application is the formulation of interpolants to solve the scattered data problem: here Bernstein-Bezier patches provide a very powerful tool; they can be used to discover new schemes as well as to discover new properties of existing methods.

Using the information of cosmic rays to predict influence epidemic

A correlation between the incidence of influenza pandemics and increased cosmic ray activity is made. A correlation is also made between the occurrence of these pandemics and the appearance of bright novae, e.g., Nova Eta Car. Four indices based on increased cosmic ray activity and novae are proposed to predict future influenza pandemics and viral antigenic shifts.
