Quick-connect scanning tunneling microscope head with nested piezoelectric coarse walkers

To meet changing research demands, new scanning tunneling microscope (STM) features must constantly evolve. We describe the design, development, and performance of a modular plug-in STM, which is compact and stable. The STM head is equipped with a quick-connect socket that is matched to a universal connector plug, enabling it to be transferred between systems. This head can be introduced into a vacuum system via a load-lock and transferred to various sites equipped with the connector plug, permitting multi-site STM operation. Its design allows for reliable operation in a variety of experimental conditions, including a broad temperature range, ultra-high vacuum, high magnetic fields, and closed-cycle pulse-tube cooling. The STM’s compact size is achieved by a novel nested piezoelectric coarse walker design, which allows for large orthogonal travel in the X, Y, and Z directions, ideal for studying both bulk and thin film samples ranging in size from mm to μm. Its stability and noise tolerance are demonstrated by achieving atomic resolution under ambient conditions on a laboratory desktop with no vibrational or acoustic isolation. The operation of the nested coarse walkers is demonstrated by successful navigation to a μm-sized 2D sample.

CharIN Megawatt Charging System: 4 th Event Summary Report

Medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles require higher charging power levels than are supported by present light-duty EV charging standards. The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) Megawatt Charging System (MCS) Task Force is undertaking efforts to develop a new high-power charging standard for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification. The fourth MCS evaluation event at NREL focused on thermal and mechanical performance evaluations of high-power MCS electric vehicle charging connectors and inlets from several different manufacturers, at current levels up to 3000A. Additionally, the event evaluated the performance of a reference inlet design, which will provide a baseline level of thermal performance for use in future evaluation and certification efforts of MCS connectors.

Animal exposure during burn tests

An animal exposure test system has been designed and fabricated for the purpose of collecting physiological and environmental (temperature) data from animal subjects exposed to combustion gases in large scale fire tests. The AETS consists of an open wire mesh, two-compartment cage, one containing an exercise wheel for small rodents, and the other containing one rat instrumented externally for electrocardiogram and respiration. The ECG and respiration sensors are located in a belt placed around the torso of the subject, electrode wires forming an umbilical to a connector in the top of the compartment. A cable extends from the connector to the power supply and signal conditioning electronics. These are connected to a dual-beam oscilloscope for real time monitoring and a magnetic tape recorder having three or more channels. Endpoints observed are bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, changes in respiratory pattern, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest. The ECG record also appears to be a good method of monitoring animal activity as indicated by an increase in EMG noise superimposed on the record during increased activity of the torso musculature. Examples of the recordings are presented and discussed as to their significance regarding toxicity of fire gases.

Aircraft-mounted crash-activated transmitter device

An aircraft crash location transmitter tuned to transmit on standard emergency frequencies is reported that is shock mounted in a sealed circular case atop the tail of an aircraft by means of a shear pin designed to fail under a G loading associated with a crash situation. The antenna for the transmitter is a metallic spring blade coiled like a spiral spring around the outside of the circular case. A battery within the case for powering the transmitter is kept trickle charged from the electrical system of the aircraft through a break away connector on the case. When a crash occurs, the resultant ejection of the case from the tail due to a failure of the shear pin releases the free end of the antenna which automatically uncoils. The accompanying separation of the connector effects closing of the transmitter key and results in commencement of transmission.

Coaxial isolator has versatile interface

Approach increases system-packaging flexibility. Isolators are constructed with removable connectors that can be changed to meet user's requirements. Technique reduces development scheduling problems. Isolators can be procured before package design is firm and then readily reconfigured to meet final design requirements. Changes to existing designs to incorporate removable connectors are minimal. Small adapter plates increase size modestly; weight increase is negligible.

Load distributions in photoeleastic bolted-joint models

An attempt is made to study the stresses in multiple-bolt connectors, focusing on the stress distribution in a two-pin connector, the two pins being in line and in parallel with the direction of the applied load. The photoelastic modeling approach with two-dimensional transmission photoelasticity is used. The joint models and model fringe patterns are discussed, with special attention given to the existence of a photoelastic isotropic point and to the separation of stresses.

Stable polyurethane coatings for electronic circuits. NASA tech briefs, fall 1982, volume 7, no. 1

One of the most severe deficiencies of polyurethanes as engineering materials for electrical applications has been their sensitivity to combined humidity and temperature environments. Gross failure by reversion of urethane connector potting materials has occurred under these conditions. This has resulted in both scrapping of expensive hardware and reduction in reliability in other instances. A basic objective of this study has been to gain a more complete understanding of the mechanisms and interactions of moisture in urethane systems to guide the development of reversion resistant materials for connector potting and conformal coating applications in high humidity environments. Basic polymer studies of molecular weight and distribution, polymer structure, and functionality were carried out to define those areas responsible for hydrolytic instability and to define polymer structural feature conducive to optimum hydrolytic stability.

Space station architecture, module, berthing hub, shell assembly, berthing mechanism and utility connection channel

The geometric form of a space station is presented that includes a description of a plurality of modules and berthing hubs, joined by interconnections which are sideways connectable. The modules and hubs are fastened together in a triangular configuration in three dimensions. The interconnections include a pair of opposed, axially aligned, flanged ports and a clamp latch formed from a plurality of sections hinged along their length and extending circumferentially around the flanged ports. A hermetic seal is formed between the ports. A utilities connection channel extends between the ports. The channel has a shell with utilities connectors movable between an extended position to mating connectors in the modules and a withdrawn position. Assembly sequence and common module shell structure is detailed.
