Hybrid receiver conceptual design and test report

The Hybrid Receiver described uses an acquisition and demodulation scheme tailored to the Jovian environment. The large Doppler offsets expected during initial acquisition led to development of the Hilbert Acquisition Aid, which provides for rapid acquisition for low signal to noise densities.

A 12 GHz satellite video receiver: Low noise, low cost prototype model for TV reception from broadcast satellites

A 12-channel synchronous phase lock video receiver consisting of an outdoor downconverter unit and an indoor demodulator unit was developed to provide both low noise performance and low cost in production quantities of 1000 units. The prototype receiver can be mass produced at a cost under $1540 without sacrificing system performance. The receiver also has the capability of selecting any of the twelve assigned satellite broadcast channels in the frequency range 11.7 to 12.2 GHz.

Experimental results on tracking performance of the MTDD Costas loop with UQPSK signal

The carrier tracking performance of the breadboard Costas Loop of the Multimegabit Telemetry Demodulator Detector System was tested with unbalanced quadriphase shift keying (UQPSK) signals. An S-band UQPSK modulator was built for the tests. The experimental results are very close to the theoretical rms phase error calculations. The test and analysis show that the rms phase error for UQPSK signals is less than 5 deg at the design point if the I-to-Q channel power ratio is larger than 6 dB.

Performance of unbalanced QPSK in the presence of noisy reference and crosstalk

The problem of transmitting two telemetry data streams having different rates and different powers using unbalanced quadriphase shift keying (UQPSK) signaling is considered. It is noted that the presence of a noisy carrier phase reference causes a degradation in detection performance in coherent communications systems and that imperfect carrier synchronization not only attenuates the main demodulated signal voltage in UQPSK but also produces interchannel interference (crosstalk) which degrades the performance still further. Exact analytical expressions for symbol error probability of UQPSK in the presence of noise phase reference are derived.

Production spectrum of gamma rays in interstellar space through neutral pion decay

A simple representation is obtained of the observed invariant cross section for the production of neutral pions in proton-proton collisions. Using this representation, the differential and integral production spectra of gamma rays in the galaxy are calculated from interactions of cosmic ray nuclei with interstellar gas. It is shown that the uncertainties in deducing interstellar proton spectrum by demodulating the observed spectrum have only a limited effect on the gamma ray spectrum. Also determined is the gamma ray production spectrum through bremsstrahlung process for a typical interstellar electron spectrum derived from the radio spectrum in the galaxy.

A generalized formulation of minimum shift keying modulation

The modulator structure consisting of a single-input two-output sequential transducer whose output sequences control the modulated signal in the manner s(t) = x(i)p(t) + y(i)q(t) is considered. Here, iT is less than or equal to t, which is less than iT + T, where T is the modulation bit duration and where x(i) and y(i) take values in /+1, -1, 0/. The behavior of a sequential transducer is characterized by means of a 'trellis'. It is shown that, provided only that the 'carriers' p(t) and q(t) have the same energy in every bit interval, the optimum demodulator for the additive white Gaussian noise channel need process the received signal over only two bit intervals in making each data bit decision. It is demonstrated that particular choices of the sequential transducer yield differential minimum shift keying and differential staggered quadriphase shift keying. Possible generalizations of this approach are discussed.

The impact of pulsed RFI on the coded BER performance of the nonlinear satellite communication channel

Communication links from low orbiting spacecraft to a central ground station, via satellite repeater, may be susceptible to significant performance degradation if high-level, pulsed radio frequency interference (RFI) must be contended with. The present paper examines the coded bit error rate (BER) performance of a communication system in which BPSK modulation is employed, pulsed CW or pulsed noise RFI is present, and the transponder contains a nonlinearity characterized by arbitrary AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics. A major result of this paper is an analytic method for determining soft decision statistics of the receiver demodulator output, in which pulsed RFI effects are accounted for. It is demonstrated that this result can be analytically applied to the approximate determination of the BER at the output of a Viterbi decoder, when convolutional coding is employed.

Heart rate, multiple body temperature, long-range and long-life telemetry system for free-ranging animals

The design details and rationale for a versatile, long-range, long-life telemetry data acquisition system for heart rates and body temperatures at multiple locations from free-ranging animals are presented. The design comprises an implantable transmitter for short to medium range transmission, a receiver retransmitter collar to be worn for long-range transmission, and a signal conditioner interface circuit to assist in signal discrimination and demodulation of receiver or tape-recorded audio outputs. Implanted electrodes are used to obtain an ECG, from which R-wave characteristics are selected to trigger a short RF pulse. Pulses carrying heart rate information are interrupted periodically by a series of pulse interval modulated RF pulses conveying temperature information sensed at desired locations by thermistors. Pulse duration and pulse sequencing are used to discriminate between heart rate and temperature pulses as well as radio frequency interference. The implanted transmitter may be used alone for medium and short-range tracking, or with a receiver-transmitter collar that employs commercial tracking equipment for transmissions of up to 12 km. A system prototype has been tested on a dog.

Detection of ultrasonic waves in solids by an optical fiber interferometer

An optical fiber interferometer was developed for the detection of ultrasonic waves in solids. The optical paths in both the signal and reference arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer are through the cores of similar lengths of single mode fiber mode stripped at both input and output. Instantaneous translation of the pattern is proportional to the localized strain produced by ultrasonic bulk waves generated in the disc and integrated along the fiber path. By spatially filtering the moving fringe pattern and synchronously demodulating the filtered optical intensity distirbution, a signal proportional to the integrated strain is obtained.

Interferometric surface-wave acousto-optic time-integrating correlators

A structure for a coherent-interferometric acousto-optic (AO) time-integrating correlator was implemented by using a single surface acoustic wave (SAW) device with tilted transducers to reduce intermodulation terms. The SAW device was fabricated on Y-Z LiNbO3 with a center frequency of 175 MHz, a bandwidth of 60 MHz, and a time aperture of about 10 micros. The density of the photodetector array, with a potential of 120 MHz. Typical integration times are 30 to 40 ms, providing processing gains in excess of 10 to the 6th power. Such a device is useful in providing fast synchronization of communication links and in demodulating to base band and simultaneously acting as a synchronization lock monitor for moderate data rates. Where processing may be limited by Doppler shifts, a two dimensional architecture was implemented to allow full processing gain. Two one-dimensional, SAW AO time-integrating correlators and a two dimensional correlator are evaluated.

Fiber optic transmission line stabilization apparatus and method

A reference signal of RF frequency modulates a 0.85 micrometer wavelength optical transmitter. The output of which passes through a first optical filter and a voltage-controller phase shifter. The output of the phase shifter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line. At the receiving end of the transmission line, the signal is demodulated and used to modulate a 1.06 micrometer optical transmitter. The signal from the transmitter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line and passes through the voltage-controlled phase shifter to a phase error detector. The phase of the modulation of the 1.06 micrometer wavelength signal is compared to the phase of the reference signal by the phase error detector. A phase control signal related to the phase difference is provided to the voltage controlled phase shifter which alters the phase of both optical signals until a predetermined phase relationship between modulation on the 1.06 micrometer signal and the reference signal is obtained.

On the group delay effect of DSN microwave components on multimegabit telemetry

When the gain and phase shift characteristics of the overall system between the modulator and demodulator are given, the group delay effect for the intended data rate can be assessed by examining the equation for the recovered signal for several rectangular pulse inputs with different duty cycles. For example, the group delay loss of 30 Mbit/sec telemetry with only a Block II X-band maser is less than 0.2 dB even with a 10-MHz center frequency offset.

NASA Pioneer: Venus reverse playback telemetry program TR 78-2

During the entry of the Pioneer Venus Atmospheric Probes into the Venus atmosphere, there were several events (RF blackout and data rate changes) which caused the ground receiving equipment to lose lock on the signal. This caused periods of data loss immediately following each one of these disturbing events which lasted until all the ground receiving units (receiver, subcarrier demodulator, symbol synchronizer, and sequential decoder) acquired lock once more. A scheme to recover these data by off-line data processing was implemented. This scheme consisted of receiving the S band signals from the probes with an open loop reciever (requiring no lock up on the signal) in parallel with the closed loop receivers of the real time receiving equipment, down converting the signals to baseband, and recording them on an analog recorder. The off-line processing consisted of playing the analog recording in the reverse direction (starting with the end of the tape) up, converting the signal to S-band, feeding the signal into the "real time" receiving system and recording on digital tape, the soft decisions from the symbol synchronizer.

Performance of an optical relay satellite using Reed-Solomon coding over a cascaded optical PPM and BPSK channel

The nature of the optical/microwave interface aboard the relay satellite is considered. To allow for the maximum system flexibility, without overburdening either the optical or RF channel, demodulating the optical on board the relay satellite but leaving the optical channel decoding to be performed at the ground station is examined. The occurrence of erasures in the optical channel is treated. A hard decision on the erasure (i.e., the relay selecting a symbol at random in case of erasure occurrence) seriously degrades the performance of the overall system. Coding the erasure occurrences at the relay and transmitting this information via an extra bit to the ground station where it can be used by the decoder is suggested. Many examples with varying bit/photon energy efficiency and for the noisy and noiseless optical channel are considered. It is shown that coding the erasure occurrences dramatically improves the performance of the cascaded channel relative to the case of hard decision on the erasure by the relay.

The Magsat three axis arc second precision attitude transfer system

The Magsat Attitude Transfer System (ATS), which provides attitude alteration in pitch, yaw, and roll is described. A remote vector magnetometer extends from Magsat on a 20 ft boom, requiring vector orientation by reference to coordinate axes determined by a set of star mapping cameras. The ATS was designed to perform in a solar illuminated environment by using an optically narrow bandwidth with synchronous demodulation at 9300 A. The pitch/yaw optical design, the electrooptics, and signal and switching diagrams are provided. Simple mirrors with no moving parts are placed on the magnetometer to reflect a collimated beam from the ATS for attitude indication, which is accurate to one part in 96. Alignment was completed within 24 hr after launch.
