Trellis Decoding Complexity of Linear Block Codes

We consider the problem of finding a trellis for a linear block code that minimizes one or more measures of trellis complexity. The domain of optimization may be different permutations of the same code, or different codes with the same parameters. Constraints on trellises, including relationships between the minimal trellis of a code and that of the dual code, are used to derive bounds on complexity. We define a partial ordering on trellises: if a trellis is optimum with respect to this partial ordering, it has the desirable property that it simultaneously minimizes all of the complexity measures examined. We examine properties of such optimal trellises and give examples of optimal permutations of codes, most notably the (48,24,12) quadratic residue code.

Decoder Synchronization for Deep Space Missions

The Consultative committee for Space Data STandards (CCSDS) recommends that space communication links employ a concatenated error-correcting channel-coding system in which the inner code is a convolutional (7, 2/2) code and the outer code is a (255,223) Reed-Solomon code.

Decoding the Broadband Emission of 2D Pb-Sn Halide Perovskites through High-Throughput Exploration

Unlike single-component 2D metal halide perovskites (MHPs) exhibiting sharp excitonic photoluminescence (PL), a broadband PL emerges in mixed Pb-Sn 2D lattices. Two physical models –self-trapped exciton and defect-induced Stokes-shift – are proposed to explain this unconventional phenomenon. However, the explanations provide limited rationalizations without consideration of the formidable compositional space, and thus, the fundamental origin of broadband PL remains elusive. Herein, the high-throughput automated experimental workflow is established to systematically explore the broadband PL in mixed Pb-Sn 2D MHPs, employing PEA (Phenethylammonium) as a model cation known to work as a rigid organic spacer. Spectrally, the broadband PL becomes further broadened with rapid PEA 2 PbI 4 phase segregation with increasing Pb concentrations during early-stage crystallization. Counterintuitively, MHPs with high Pb concentrations exhibit prolonged PL lifetimes. Hyperspectral microscopy identifies substantial PEA 2 PbI 4 phase segregation in those films, hypothesizing that the establishment of charge transfer excitons by the phase segregation upon crystallization at high-Pb compositions results in distinctive PL properties. In conclusion, these results indicate that two independent mechanisms—defect-induced Stoke-shifts and the establishment of charge transfer excitons by phase segregation—coexist which significantly correlates with the Pb:Sn ratio, thereby simultaneously contributing to the broadband PL emission in 2D mixed Pb-Sn HPs.

Decoding THz‐Driven Dynamic Fingerprints of Ferroelectric Nanotwin Networks

Ultrafast polarization dynamics in ferroelectrics are of considerable interest for high-speed tunable dielectrics and electro-optics. Extended domain wall networks formed in ferroelectric twin nanodomains can support collective dynamics in the terahertz regime but require techniques that track polarization and strain evolution driven by ultrafast stimulus. Here, we use multi-modal probing of THz-pulse-driven excitations in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices by combining X-ray free electron laser measurements that directly tracks lattice changes, with optical second harmonic generation that tracks the electronic potential coupled with the lattice potential. Dynamical phase-field modeling enables fingerprinting of these collective modes as superpositions of domain “breathing” through wall oscillations and polarization “rotations” with still walls. Ultrafast domain wall motion at 0.1–0.5 THz is observed at practical fields of 100 kV/cm with wall velocities of >4000 m/s, approaching typical speed of sound in PbTiO 3 . A unique “charging” mode is discovered that can electrically charge and discharge domain walls on ∼4 ps time scale thus dynamically tuning wall conductivity. Integrated experimental and theoretical fingerprinting of the dynamical landscape presented here enables ultrafast control of ferroics for high-speed microelectronics and optical applications.

Decoding Gas Evolution Pathways and Interfacial Chemistry in Layered Oxide Cathodes for Safer Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attractive for the low cost and abundance of sodium. Yet, gas evolution—a critical challenge in SIBs—remains underexplored. Here, online electrochemical mass spectrometry is used to probe gas evolution in layered oxide cathodes with various compositions, cutoff voltages, dopants, and particle morphologies. Compared to LiNiO 2 (LNO), NaNiO 2 releases more gas, even at lower states of charge, due to the higher covalency of Ni─O bond caused by the more ionic Na─O bond through the inductive effect. Among Co, Mn, Al, and Mg, Mn and Mg doping suppress gas release most effectively by enhancing the metal-oxygen bond strength. NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NFM) cathodes synthesized via coprecipitation (CP-NFM) and solid-state routes exhibit distinct particle morphologies; CP-NFM exhibits more gas evolution, yet secondary particle morphology helps reduce it through differential cathode-electrolyte reactivity between inner and outer primary particles. Among Li, Ti, Mg, and Cu doping in NFM, Li has the largest effect, reducing gas levels comparable to LNO. Nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies reveal that electrolyte solvent decomposition mainly produces organic-rich cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) rather than soluble species. NaPF 6 salt further exacerbates cathode-electrolyte reactions, forming surface Na 2 O species. The findings provide actionable guidance for designing safer, durable SIBs.

Decoding α-MoC 1− x Nanoparticle Formation in Continuous Flow via Machine Learning

Molybdenum carbide nanoparticles (α-MoC 1−x NPs) are promising catalysts that offer noble-metal-like performance at lower cost. We report a mild continuous-flow synthesis of α-MoC 1−x NPs from Mo(CO) 6 , coupled with in-line spectroscopic monitoring and machine learning (ML)-based analysis to quantify precursor conversion and product formation in real time. A multilayer perceptron ML model was found to accurately deconvolute complex, nonlinear spectral patterns, enabling identification of a two-step reaction pathway, involving precursor conversion to an amorphous intermediate followed by intraparticle crystallization to α-MoC 1−x NPs, with the first step being rate limiting. Ex situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) validation confirm the predicted concentration profiles and crystallization behavior. This integrated approach showcases how ML can empower insights into NP nucleation and growth, paving the way for self-driving, flow-based platforms for NP synthesis.

CMPLE: Correlation Modeling to Decode Photosynthesis Using the Minorize–Maximize Algorithm

In plant genomic experiments, correlations among various biological traits (phenotypes) give new insights into how genetic diversity may have tuned biological processes to enhance fitness under diverse conditions. Consequently, knowing how the correlations are affected by genetic (G) and environmental (E) factors helps develop climate-resilient plants. However, the current literature lacks any method for assessing the effect of predictors on pairwise correlations among multiple phenotypes together with easily interpretable model parameters. To address this need, we propose to model pairwise correlations directly in terms of G and E and develop a computationally efficient inference procedure. Two major novelties in our methodology are (1) the use of a composite pairwise likelihood method to avoid the positive definiteness restriction on the correlation matrix and (2) the use of a novel Minorize–Maximize (MM) algorithm for the efficient estimation of a large number of parameters. The proposed method shows excellent numerical performance on synthetic datasets. Here, the analysis of the motivating data on cowpea reveals that the rates of solar energy storage by photosynthesis (the aggregate trait) are differentially affected by different genetic loci through two distinct processes: “photoinhibition” which results from photodamage caused by excess light, and “photoprotection” which protects plants from photodamage but also results in energy loss.
