The prediction of lightning-induced voltages on metallic and composite aircraft

Various government agencies have put forth effort to enable the prediction of what lightning current will do to aircraft avionic systems. Ongoing and future efforts of predicting avionic voltages and currents caused by electromagnetic fields external to the aircraft are illustrated. The Intrasystem Analysis Program (IAP) was put to use to predict lightning-induced voltages on avionic systems. Presently funded programs are investigating the modification nonmetallic composite materials will cause to the metallic IAP program predictions. The various factors involved in designing prediction techniques are discussed.

The TELEC - A plasma type of direct energy converter

The Thermo-Electronic Laser Energy Converter (TELEC) is a high-power density plasma device designed to convert a 10.6-micron CO2 laser beam into electric power. Electromagnetic radiation is absorbed in plasma electrons, creating a high-electron temperature. Energetic electrons diffuse from the plasma and strike two electrodes having different areas. The larger electrode collects more electrons and there is a net transport of current. An electromagnetic field is generated in the external circuit. A computer program has been designed to analyze TELEC performance allowing parametric variation for optimization. Values are presented for TELEC performance as a function of cesium pressure and for current density and efficiency as a function of output voltage. Efficiency is shown to increase with pressure, reaching a maximum over 45%.

On the passage of radiation through inhomogeneous, moving media. XIV - Poynting's theorem revisited

Certain arguments by Ko and Chuang (1979) against Lerche's (1975) interpretation of Poynting's theorem for a moving medium with linear constitutive relations are rebutted. It is argued that the contentions of Ko and Chuang are misleading, at the very least, and devoid of original information. Ko and Chuang's ascription of the physical role played by various terms in Poynting's theorem are shown to be subjective and nonunique. It is concluded that the energy and momentum of an electromagnetic field can indeed be partitioned in an essentially arbitrary manner.

Preliminary design of large reflectors with flat facets

A concept for approximating curved antenna surfaces using flat facets is discussed. A preliminary design technique for determining the size of the reflector surface facets necessary to meet antenna surface accuracy requirements is presented. A proposed large Microwave Radiometer Satellite is selected as an application, and the far field electromagnetic response of a faceted reflector surface is compared with that from a spherical reflector surface.

Airborne lightning characterization

A WC-130 aircraft was instrumented with wideband electromagnetic field sensors and flown near active thunderstorms to obtain data on the characteristics of nearby and direct strike lightning. An electric field ground station and time-of-arrival network provided time correlated data to identify the three dimensional locations of the discharge and the different events in the lightning flash. A description of the sensors, calibration procedures, and recording equipment is presented. Data are presented on return stroke characteristics in the 5 to 50 km range.

An automatic locating system for cloud-to-ground lightning

Automatic locating systems which respond to cloud to ground lightning and which discriminate against cloud discharges and background noise are described. Subsystems of the locating system, which include the direction finder and the position analyzer, are discussed. The direction finder senses the electromagnetic fields radiated by lightning on two orthogonal magnetic loop antennas and on a flat plate electric antenna. The position analyzer is a preprogrammed microcomputer system which automatically computes, maps, and records lightning locations in real time using data inputs from the direction finder. The use of the locating systems for wildfire management and fire weather forecasting is discussed.

Second moments of optical degradation due to a thin turbulent layer

The effect of thin turbulent layers, including boundary layers and shear layers, on light propagation is examined from a theoretical point of view. In particular, a mathematical model is developed to describe the interaction between the aerodynamic or, more precisely, the density fluctuations and the electromagnetic field. It is assumed that the turbulence induces a normally distributed phase aberration which is a homogeneous random function in the plane of the aperture. Hypotheses concerning the density fluctuations in the layer sufficient to guarantee such a phase aberration are exhibited. The optical degradation is described in terms of the optical transfer function (OTF) and the Strehl ratio (I/I O ) which are random. Expressions for the first and second moments of these two parameters are developed from the definitions. Asymptotic ("large" aperture) approximations to these expressions are derived and discussed. Finally, the exact and approximate results are compared for several "typical" values of the ratios of aperture diameter to scale of density fluctuations and rms phase aberration to wave length respectively.

Vector analogues of the Maggi-Rubinowicz theory of edge diffraction

The Maggi-Rubinowicz technique for scalar and electromagnetic fields is interpreted as a transformation of an integral over an open surface to a line integral around its rim. Maggi-Rubinowicz analogues are found for several vector physical optics representations. For diffraction from a circular aperture, a numerical comparison between these formulations shows the two methods are in agreement. To circumvent certain convergence difficulties in the Maggi-Rubinowicz integrals that occur as the observer approaches the shadow boundary, a variable mesh integration is used. For the examples considered, where the ratio of the aperture diameter to wavelength is about ten, the Maggi-Rubinowicz formulation yields an 8 to 10 fold decrease in computation time relative to the physical optics formulation.

Starprobe - The science opportunities

The scientific objectives of the NASA Starprobe mission for an unmanned spacecraft to pass within three solar radii of the sun's surface are reviewed. Fundamental observations of gravitation, relativity, and factors related to the solar interior, measurements of the static and dynamic electromagnetic fields and the particle populations close to the sun, and observations of the solar atmosphere from the photosphere to the corona with high spatial resolution would be possible with the Starprobe. A determination of the quadrupole coefficient in the expansion of the gravitational potential field of the sun is noted to be possible by measuring the departure from a Keplerian orbit of the Starprobe as it passes perihelion, yielding data on the rate of revolution of the interior of the sun. Further information on shock acceleration, energy losses, radio bursts, interplanetary propagation, and diffusion will be available at 10-60 solar radii.

Laboratory modeling and analysis of aircraft-lightning interactions

Modeling studies of the interaction of a delta wing aircraft with direct lightning strikes were carried out using an approximate scale model of an F-106B. The model, which is three feet in length, is subjected to direct injection of fast current pulses supplied by wires, which simulate the lightning channel and are attached at various locations on the model. Measurements are made of the resulting transient electromagnetic fields using time derivative sensors. The sensor outputs are sampled and digitized by computer. The noise level is reduced by averaging the sensor output from ten input pulses at each sample time. Computer analysis of the measured fields includes Fourier transformation and the computation of transfer functions for the model. Prony analysis is also used to determine the natural frequencies of the model. Comparisons of model natural frequencies extracted by Prony analysis with those for in flight direct strike data usually show lower damping in the in flight case. This is indicative of either a lightning channel with a higher impedance than the wires on the model, only one attachment point, or short streamers instead of a long channel.

Plant seeds in biological research in space

Data of 15 years of space flight and laboratory tests of plant seeds of 20 species, mainly on the combined and separate effects of launch vibration, ionizing radiation and weightlessness, are surveyed. It is concluded that plants do not show a pronounced response to space flight factors. Conditions of return to Earth, the number of heavy cosmic ray particles striking biological targets and effects of change in magnetic an electromagnetic fields have been little studied, and that more study of growing plants in space is needed.
