Electronic structure, dimer physics, orbital-selective behavior, and magnetic tendencies in the bilayer nickelate superconductor $\mathrm{La_3Ni_2O_7}$under pressure

Motivated by the recently reported high-temperature superconductivity in the bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 (LNO) under pressure, we comprehensively study this system using ab initio techniques. The Ni 3d orbitals have a large bandwidth at ambient pressure, increasing by ~22% at 29.5 GPa. Without electronic interactions, the Ni d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals form a bonding-antibonding molecular orbital state via the O p z inducing a “dimer” lattice in the LNO bilayers. The Fermi surface consists of two-electron sheets with mixed e g orbitals and a hole pocket defined by the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital, suggesting a Ni two-orbital minimum model. Different from the infinite-layer nickelate, we obtained a large interorbital hopping between d 3z 2 -r 2 and d x 2 -y 2 states in LNO, caused by the ligand “bridge” of in-plane O p x or p y orbitals connecting those two orbitals, inducing d-p σ-bonding characteristics. The competition between the intraorbital and interorbital hoppings leads to an interesting dominant spin stripe (π,0) order because of bond ferromagnetic tendencies via the recently discussed “half-empty” mechanism.

Tuning the electronic structure of Ag-Pd alloys to enhance performance for alkaline oxygen reduction

Alloying is a powerful tool that can improve the electrocatalytic performance and viability of diverse electrochemical renewable energy technologies. Herein, we enhance the activity of Pd-based electrocatalysts via Ag-Pd alloying while simultaneously lowering precious metal content in a broad-range compositional study focusing on highly comparable Ag-Pd thin films synthesized systematically via electron-beam physical vapor co-deposition. Cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M KOH shows enhancements across a wide range of alloys; even slight alloying with Ag (e.g. Ag 0.1 Pd 0.9 ) leads to intrinsic activity enhancements up to 5-fold at 0.9 V vs. RHE compared to pure Pd. Based on density functional theory and x-ray absorption, we hypothesize that these enhancements arise mainly from ligand effects that optimize adsorbate–metal binding energies with enhanced Ag-Pd hybridization. This work shows the versatility of coupled experimental-theoretical methods in designing materials with specific and tunable properties and aids the development of highly active electrocatalysts with decreased precious-metal content.

First principles study of the electronic structure of the Ni 2 MnIn / InAs and Ti 2 MnIn / InSb interfaces

We present a first principles study of the electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial interfaces between the Heusler compounds, Ti 2 MnIn and Ni 2 MnIn, and the III-V semiconductors, InSb and InAs, respectively. We use density functional theory (DFT) with a machine-learned Hubbard U correction determined by Bayesian optimization. Here, we evaluate these interfaces for prospective applications in Majorana-based quantum computing and spintronics. In both interfaces, states from the Heusler penetrate into the gap of the semiconductor, decaying within a few atomic layers. The magnetic interactions at the interface are weak and local in space and energy. Magnetic moments of less than 0.1 µB are induced in the two atomic layers closest to the interface. The induced spin polarization around the Fermi level of the semiconductor decays within a few atomic layers. The decisive factor for the induced spin polarization around the Fermi level of the semiconductor is the spin polarization around the Fermi level in the Heusler, rather than the overall magnetic moment. As a result, the ferrimagnetic narrow-gap semiconductor Ti 2 MnIn induces a more significant spin polarization in the InSb than the ferromagnetic metal Ni 2 MnIn induces in the InAs. This is explained by the position of the transition metal d states in the Heusler with respect to the Fermi level. Based on our results, these interfaces are unlikely to be useful for Majorana devices but could be of interest for spintronics.

Elucidating the local atomic and electronic structure of amorphous oxidized superconducting niobium films

Qubits made from superconducting materials are a mature platform for quantum information science application, such as quantum computing. However, material-based losses are now a limiting factor in reaching the coherence times needed for applications. In particular, knowledge of the atomistic structure and properties of the circuit materials is needed to identify, understand, and mitigate material-based decoherence channels. Here, we characterize the atomic structure of the native oxide film formed on Nb resonators by comparing fluctuation electron microscopy experiments to density functional theory calculations, finding that an amorphous layer is consistent with an Nb 2 O 5 stoichiometry. Comparing x-ray absorption measurements at the Oxygen K edge with first-principles calculations, we find evidence of d-type magnetic impurities in our sample, known to cause impedance in proximal superconductors. This work identifies the structural and chemical composition of the oxide layer grown on Nb superconductors and shows that soft x-ray absorption can fingerprint magnetic impurities in these superconducting systems.

Trends in electronic structures and s ± -wave pairing for the rare-earth series in bilayer nickelate superconductor R 3 Ni 2 O 7

The recent discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 (LNO) has opened a new platform for the study of unconventional superconductors. In this publication, we investigate theoretically the whole family of bilayer 327-type nickelates R 3 Ni 2 O 7 (R = rare-earth elements) under pressure. From La to Lu, the lattice constants and volume decrease, leading to enhanced in-plane and out-of-plane hoppings, resulting in an effectively reduced electronic correlation U / W. Furthermore, the Ni's t 2g states shift away from the e g states, while the crystal-field splitting between d 3z 2 -r 2 and d x 2 -y 2 is almost unchanged. In addition, six candidates were found to become stable in the Fmmm phase, with increasing values of critical pressure as the atomic number increases. Similar to the case of LNO, the s ± -wave pairing tendency dominates in all candidates, due to the nesting between the M = (π , π) and the X = (π , 0) and Y = (0 , π) points in the Brillouin zone. Then, T c is expected to decrease as the radius of rare-earth (RE) ions decreases. In conclusion, our results suggest that LNO is already the “optimal” candidate, with Ce a close competitor, among the whole of the RE bilayer nickelates, and to increase T c we suggest growing on special substrates with larger in-plane lattice spacings.

Emergent flat band electronic structure in a VSe 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure

Flat band electronic states are proposed to be a fundamental tool to achieve various quantum states of matter at higher temperatures due to the enhanced electronic correlations. However, materials with such peculiar electronic states are rare and often rely on subtle properties of the band structures. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show the emergent flat band in a VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure. Our photoemission study demonstrates that the flat band covers the entire Brillouin zone and exhibits 2D nature with a complex circular dichroism. In addition, the Dirac cone of Bi 2 Se 3 is not reshaped by the flat band even though they overlap in proximity of the Dirac point. These features make this flat band distinguishable from the ones previously found. Thereby, the observation of a flat band in the VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure opens a promising pathway to realize strongly correlated quantum effects in topological materials.

Orbital contributions in the element-resolved valence electronic structure of Bi 2 Se 3

In this work, we studied the bulk band structure of a topological insulator (TI) Bi 2 Se 3 and determined the contributions of the Bi and Se orbital states to the valence bands using standing-wave excited hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SW-HAXPES). This SW technique can provide the element-resolved information and extract individual Bi and Se contributions to the Bi2Se3 valence band. Comparisons with density-functional theory calculations (local density approximation and GW) reveal that the Bi 6s, Bi 6p, and Se 4p states are dominant in the Bi 2 Se 3 HAXPES valence band. Furthermore, these findings pave a way for studying the element-resolved band structure and orbital contributions of this class of TIs.

Topochemical Synthesis and Electronic Structure of High-Crystallinity Infinite-Layer Nickelates on an Orthorhombic Substrate

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has stirred much research interest, to which questions regarding the nature of superconductivity remain elusive. A critical leap forward to address these intricate questions is through the growth of high-crystallinity infinite-layer nickelates, including the “parent” phase. Here, we report the synthesis of a high-quality thin-film nickelate, NdNiO 2 . This is achieved through the growth of a perovskite precursor phase (NdNiO 3 ) of superior crystallinity on the NdGaO 3 substrate by off-axis RF magnetron sputtering and a low-temperature topochemical reduction using NaH. We observe a nonlinear Hall effect at low temperatures in this “non-doped” phase. We further study the electronic properties using advanced X-ray scattering and first-principles calculations. We observe spectroscopic indications of the enhanced two-dimensionality and a reduced hybridization of Nd 5d and Ni 3d orbitals. These findings unlock new pathways for preparing high-quality infinite-layer nickelates and provide new insights into the intrinsic features of these compounds.

Ultra-stable trimetallic phosphide heterostructure with regulated electronic structure for overall water splitting at high current densities

Developing ultra-stable electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting at high current density (HCD) is critical for renewable hydrogen/oxygen production in the industry. However, the most active electrocatalysts for large current-driven water splitting are seriously handicapped by insufficient electrical contact kinetics due to the intensive bubble overflow. Herein, we demonstrate the ultra-stable trimetallic phosphides of NiFeP/NiCoP catalysts on a hydrophilic Ni foam skeleton via a corrosion-hydrothermal-phosphating strategy. The optimized NiFeP/NiCoP catalyst stabilizes for 600 h at -1 A cm -2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, and it only needs low overpotentials of 237 and 314 mV to drive HER and OER at 1 A cm -2 , respectively. As expected, the optimized NiFeP/NiCoP electrode maintains 1000 h at 0.5 A cm -2 for water splitting, ranking among the top performers among reported catalysts. Such excellent performance could be attributed to the fast electron transfer for electrochemical reactions, the electron-deficient Fe/Ni sites contribute to forming robust metal oxyhydroxide during OER, and electron-rich Co sites facilitate H adsorption during HER. In conclusion, the findings present a highly promising candidate for ultra-stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts, offering a viable option for hydrogen/oxygen supply for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Synthesis, Electronic Structure, and Reactivity of a Planar Four–Coordinate, Cobalt–Imido Complex

A four-coordinate cobalt imido complex, ( tBu mPNP)Co=NMes ( tBu mPNP = modified PNP pincer ligand) has been synthesized from addition of 2,4,6-trimethylphenylazide (Mes–N 3 ) to the corresponding dinitrogen complex. The solid-state structure determined by X-ray diffraction established a rare, idealized planar geometry with a Co=N bond distance of 1.716(2) Å. Magnetic measurements revealed an S = 1 ground state with CAS-SCF calculations supporting radical character on the imide nitrogen. Here, thermolysis of the cobalt-imido compound induced selective insertion of the imido group into a Co–P bond and yielded a three-coordinate cobalt complex with a distorted T-shaped geometry. Transition state analysis conducted with DFT calculations established the thermodynamic stability of the P–N coupled product and provided insight into the exclusive selectivity.

Underlying simplicity of 5f unoccupied electronic structure

Using a simple empirical model based upon the bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy of elemental Th, it is possible to explain the recent high energy resolution fluorescence detection measurements of UF 4 (n = 2) and UCd 11 (n = 3) as well as the new inverse photoelectron spectroscopy of Pu 2 O 3 (n = 5), where n is the 5f occupation number. Furthermore, a critical issue in this analysis is the assumption that the Th 5f states are essentially empty, which will be confirmed both experimentally and computationally. Thus, for 5f systems, this simple model provides a unified and consistent picture of 5f unoccupied density of states in simple, localized systems, as the 5f occupation varies in the early part of the series, for n = 0, 2, 3, and 5.

Bandgap and electronic structure of CaSiN 2 : Experiment and theory

Abstract We interrogate the electronic properties of the nitridosilicate CaSiN 2 as determined using soft X‐ray absorption and emission spectroscopy, which probe directly the partial electronic density of states. We compare our measurements to full potential, all electron density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Good agreement between experiment and theory is obtained, and the electronic bandgap of CaSiN 2 is determined to be 3.95 ± 0.3 eV, in contrast with our predicted value of 4.78 eV that was calculated using the modified Becke–Johnson exchange‐correlation functional with the DFT framework.

Electronic Structure and Mechanical Properties of Solvated Montmorillonite Clay Using Large-Scale DFT Method

Montmorillonite clay (MMT) has been widely used in engineering and environmental applications as a landfill barrier and toxic waste repository due to its unique property as an expandable clay mineral that can absorb water easily. This absorption process rendered MMT to be highly exothermic due to electrostatic interactions among molecules and hydrogen bonds between surface atoms. A detailed study of a large supercell model of structural clay enables us to predict long-term nuclear waste storage. Herein, a large solvent MMT model with 4071 atoms is studied using ab initio density functional theory. The DFT calculation and analysis clarify the important issues, such as bond strength, solvation effect, elasticity, and seismic wave velocities. These results are compared to our previous study on crystalline MMT (dry). The solvated MMT has reduced shear modulus (G), bulk modulus (K), and Young’s modulus (E). We observe that the conduction band (CB) in the density of states (DOS) of solvated MMT model has a single, conspicuous peak at –8.5 eV. Moreover, the atom-resolved partial density of states (PDOS) summarizes the roles played by each atom in the DOS. These findings illuminate numerous potential sophisticated applications of MMT clay.

Mixed Tin-Titanium Oxides by Atomic Layer Deposition on Planar Substrates: Physical and Electronic Structure

Ternary atomic layer deposition of Sn-doped TiO x (Sn:TiO x ) and Ti-doped SnO x (Ti:SnO x ) was performed using tetrakisdimethylamidotitanium (IV) and tin(IV) with water at 150 °C on (1 0 0) Si and quartz substrates. The physical structure of the films was investigated using scanning electron, atomic force, and Kelvin probe force microscopies as well as spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. All as-deposited films are amorphous and possessed flat and conformal topographies with low surface roughness (<1 nm). Annealed Sn:TiO x and Ti:SnO x crystallize into the tetragonal anatase TiO 2 and cassiterite SnO 2 structures, respectively, without large variations to the film topography. The chemical composition of the as-deposited and annealed films was investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. While dopants are homogenously mixed, the ternary ALD to form Sn:TiO x and Ti:SnO x surprisingly does not follow the rule of mixtures, despite similarities in both the growth rates of binary SnO x and TiO x and the precursors used. This finding is also supported by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Here, we postulate the deviation from the rule of mixtures is due to non-ideal surface chemistry of the binary ALD of SnO x . The optical bandgap of all films was quantified by the Tauc analysis and the valence band position was investigated by valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Intra-bandgap states above the valence band maximum were observed for as-deposited Ti:SnO x and Sn:TiO x and ascribed to 5 s states from Sn 2+ ions. The presence of these intra-bandgap states induces enhanced visible absorption and bathochromic shifts to the apparent bandgap for all as-deposited films. Annealing the films removes the intra-bandgap states and increases the optical bandgap. Simplified band diagrams created using the data available demonstrated that the conduction and valence band positions did not vary between the positions of pure TiO 2 or SnO 2 with monotonic increases to the dopant incorporation.
