Lightning protection practices applied to field station installations

Theoretical considerations of lightning phenomena and the effects of the magnetic, capacitive, and resistive components of lightning-induced voltages are discussed. A typical tracking station is analyzed from a lightning standpoint. Specific protective methods are discussed, including the implementation of high-surge-current voltage clippers for sensitive electrical and electronic circuits, grounding, counterpoises, and bonding. The safety of operating personnel is also treated as a prime consideration.

Erosion, transportation and the nature of the Maria

Lunar Orbiter and Apollo photographs of the moon and laboratory simulations of a surface transportation mechanism are discussed. Studies of shoulders at junctions of old mountains with flat mare surfaces show that the crater density in the shoulder is lower than that in the neighboring ground. The crisscross pattern is very pronounced on the mountain slope, is on the shoulder in a smaller scale, and is absent on the mare surface. It is concluded that the material forming the shoulders came there as a consequence of a surface transportation mechanism, and that the shoulders reached their present configuration later than the final shaping of the mare surface. Seismic signal transmission and mascon distribution data indicate that the filling of mare basins did not occur in a similar manner. An electrostatic mechanism for surface transportation was studied experimentally by bombarding material with electrons. An electric field resulted which was capable of dislodging and moving grains. It was also found that the junction line between different materials remains sharp, and materials do not mix even when the junction line itself moves.

A versatile substrate design for LEED and AES studies in uhv.

A substrate design is described that incorporates a single crystal disk into an electrically isolated, electron bombardment heated mount. Electron and photon leakage from the bombarding filament are prevented, and LEED and AES may be used at elevated temperatures. A cold finger, thermally coupled to the mount, decreases the time lost between cleaning the crystal and cooling it to the desired observation temperature. The cold finger also allows observation at temperatures below ambient.

Dynamic power load simulator

Two independent models simulate dynamic and steady-state responses of electrical and electronic equipment under power load. One is resistance/capacitance/inductance network, and the other is variable resistance analog device. Resistance, inductance, and/or capacitance are selected by iterative process; time-domain response is compared with that of real equipment to select optimal values.

The influence of autoionization accompanied by excitation on the dielectronic recombination and the ionization equilibrium of silicon ions

The dielectronic recombination rate coefficients have been calculated for the various ionization stages of silicon. Account has been taken of all stabilizing radiative transitions and all autoionization processes which involve a single-electron electric-dipole transition of the recombining ion core. For certain ions the dielectronic recombination rates, although still larger than the direct radiative recombination rates, are found to be substantially reduced when account is taken of the effects of a previously neglected autoionization process in which the excited recombining ion core undergoes a delta n = 0 transition to a lower excited state. The temperatures at which these ions have their maximum abundance in corona equilibrium are significantly reduced when use is made of the new dielectronic recombination rates. Calculations are also presented for the total rates of radiative energy loss from isothermal steady-state plasmas due to the line and continuum emission of silicon ions.

Lightning effects on aircraft

Direct and indirect effects of lightning on aircraft were examined in relation to aircraft design. Specific trends in design leading to more frequent lightning strikes were individually investigated. These trends included the increasing use of miniaturized, solid state components in aircraft electronics and electric power systems. A second trend studied was the increasing use of reinforced plastics and other nonconducting materials in place of aluminum skins, a practice that reduces the electromagnetic shielding furnished by a conductive skin.

Guidelines for the selection and application of tantalum electrolytic capacitors in highly reliable equipment

Guidelines are given for the selection and application of three types of tantalum electrolytic capacitors in current use in the design of electrical and electronic circuits for space flight missions. In addition, the guidelines supplement requirements of existing military specifications used in the procurement of capacitors. A need exists for these guidelines to assist designers in preventing some of the recurring, serious problems experienced with tantalum electrolytic capacitors in the recent past. The three types of capacitors covered by these guidelines are; solid, wet foil, and tantalum cased wet slug.

Lightning hazards and, more generally, aircraft static electricity are discussed by a representative for the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory. An overview of these atmospheric electricity hazards to aircraft and their systems is presented with emphasis on electrical and electronic subsystems. The discussion includes reviewing some of the characteristics of lightning and static electrification, trends in weather and lightning-related mishaps, some specific threat mechanisms and susceptible aircraft subsystems and some of the present technology gaps. A roadmap (flow chart) is presented to show the direction needed to address these problems.
