Detection and Bulk Properties of the HR 8799 Planets with High-resolution Spectroscopy

Using the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer, we obtained high-resolution (R ~ 35,000) K-band spectra of the four planets orbiting HR 8799. We clearly detected H{sub 2}O and CO in the atmospheres of HR 8799 c, d, and e, and tentatively detected a combination of CO and H{sub 2}O in b. These are the most challenging directly imaged exoplanets that have been observed at high spectral resolution to date when considering both their angular separations and flux ratios. We developed a forward-modeling framework that allows us to jointly fit the spectra of the planets and the diffracted starlight simultaneously in a likelihood-based approach and obtained posterior probabilities on their effective temperatures, surface gravities, radial velocities, and spins. We measured vsin (i) values of 10.1{sub -2.7}{sup +2.8} km s{sup -1} for HR 8799 d and 15.0{sub -2.6}{sup +2.3} km s{sup -1} for HR 8799 e, and placed an upper limit of <14 km s{sup -1} of HR 8799 c. Under two different assumptions of their obliquities, we found tentative evidence that rotation velocity is anticorrelated with companion mass, which could indicate that magnetic braking with a circumplanetary disk at early times is less efficient at spinning down lower-mass planets.

Plant respirometer enables high resolution of oxygen consumption rates

Plant respirometer permits high resolution of relatively small changes in the rate of oxygen consumed by plant organisms undergoing oxidative metabolism in a nonphotosynthetic state. The two stage supply and monitoring system operates by a differential pressure transducer and provides a calibrated output by digital or analog signals.

High resolution power spectra of daily Zurich sunspot numbers

High resolution power spectra of 77 years of Zurich daily sunspot numbers were computed using various lags and data point intervals. Major harmonic peaks of the approximately 124-month period showed up strongly as well as the 27-day solar rotational period.

Preliminary design study of a high resolution meteor radar

A design study for a high resolution meteor radar system is carried out with the objective of measuring upper atmospheric winds and particularly studying short period atmospheric waves in the 80 to 120 km altitude region. The transmitter that is to be used emits a peak power of 4 Mw. The system is designed to measure the wind velocity and height of a meteor trail very accurately. This is achieved using a specially developed digital reduction procedure to determine wind velocity and range together with an interferometer for measuring both the azimuth and elevation angles of the region with a long baseline vernier measurement being used to refine the elevation angle measurement. The resultant accuracies are calculated to be + or - 0.9 m/s for the wind, + or - 230 m for the range and + or - 0.12 deg for the elevation angle, giving a height accuracy of + or - 375 m. The prospects for further development of this system are also discussed.
