High Performance Computing (HPC) enables problem solving at the grandest scales, on the most complex challenges that face humanity. The problems often tackled by scientific computing are: Very complex; Cool; Using the fastest, most powerful supercomputers on the planet; Often important, impactful, effecting real lives.
Project Objectives: The focus for the entirety of the last quarter was on the completion of the pilot loan funding within our portfolio, and the closing out of our DOE-CAP Grant: “Innovative Pathways: Transforming Impact Investments to Working Capital for Early Stage Cleantech Companies.” The fourteenth quarter (Q14) of the program performance was also dedicated toward two main activities: the continued fundraising efforts for a formalized LACI debt fund, as well as finalization of the lending processes for pilot underwriting amongst the LACI Team and with Mission Driven Finance. This quarter marked key successes around the workflows of the DOE-CAP grant, specifically around fund capitalization efforts. Activities during the thirteenth quarter included: 1. Finalization of the DOE-CAP grant activities and work-flows; 2. Due diligence, underwriting and issuance of one (1) loan in Q1 2021 and three (3) in Q4 2020 for technology providers in grant-funded zero emissions mobility & community pilots, in partnership with LACI and local organizations, totaling ten (10) total loans; 3. Development of fundraising and marketing materials, and distribution to 30+ possible funding sources over the course of Q13 & Q14; and 4. Reinvigoration of conversations with Mission Driven Finance, the prospective underwriting partner for key activities and governance documents, and finalization of all loan processing activities once the fund is capitalized
A particle accelerator is a scientific instrument that produces a directional stream of electrically charged particles, usually electrons or protons. The accelerator propels particles to high speeds, close to the speed of light. Historically, accelerators play a crucial role in scientific discovery. Nowadays, accelerators produce particle beams for biomedical and material research, manufacturing, energy technology, and Homeland security.
Objectives of the Program: Identify employees with symptoms/discomfort and provide early intervention/rapid response before discomfort becomes an injury; Demonstrate to employees that the Laboratory cares about them using a personalized approach; Improve worker productivity and workplace satisfaction; Spread the word so that employees report discomfort early and rapid intervention can be executed to prevent injuries; facilitate procurement of necessary equipment as quickly as possible given risk of progression to injury.
We want to assess the group’s capability and the ability to build such capabilities, such as to turn a collaboration into a production and operation capability for the LANSCE 805 MHz RF power system.

The progenitors of gamma-ray bursts - the brightest explosions in our universe - are still poorly understood. It has been suggested that massive stars collapsing in interacting binary systems (i.e. with a closely orbiting compact object companion) can provide the necessary angular momentum and dense surrounding medium to explain observations of radio-loud gamma-ray bursts. We explore this progenitor system using the population synthesis code COSMIC. We explore the dependence of the properties of an interacting binary systems - including the remnant types and their masses - on metallicity and mass raction of the binary system. We also explore how the rates of populations of these systems depend on metallicity. Our findings help constrain what properties lead to viable GRB progenitors, especially radio loud GRBs.
