Text Exchange System

Text Exchange System (TES) exchanges and maintains organized textual information including source code, documentation, data, and listings. System consists of two computer programs and definition of format for information storage. Comprehensive program used to create, read, and maintain TES files. TES developed to meet three goals: First, easy and efficient exchange of programs and other textual data between similar and dissimilar computer systems via magnetic tape. Second, provide transportable management system for textual information. Third, provide common user interface, over wide variety of computing systems, for all activities associated with text exchange.

Braille Reading Systems

Two proposed electromechanical systems for making braille characters produced relatively inexpensively. Similar in operating principle to dotmatrix printers, two methods use electronically actuated pins to reproduce characters from information stored on magnetic tape. First, one or more pins scanned over blank page and energized at intervals to emboss text on paper, one or more dots at time. Second, handheld device containing one or more character-generator cells used by reader to scan lines of text manually.

Field tests of the real-data acquisiton system for the NASA-LaRC differential absorption lidar

A data acquisition system (DAS) for the NASA/LaRC Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) was documented. This DAS is a dual LSI 11/23 set up where one computer retrieves data from the digitizers and other peripheral units, stores that data on magnetic tape, generates aerosol grayscales on a Trilog printer and passes data to the second computer. The second computer is dedicated to real time displays of the data in a variety of modes from raw data to range resolved ozone profiles. The DIAL DAS also has several new features.

Small Payload Flight Systems (SPFS)

The Small Payload Flight System (SPFS) provides a simple and cost-effective approach to carrying small size experiments on the space shuttle. The system uses a bridge-like structure which spans the orbiter cargo bay but is only 3 feet in length. The structure can carry up to 4300 lb of payload weight and can be positioned at any location along the length of the cargo bay. In addition to the structural support, the SPFS provides avionics services to experiments. These include electrical power distribution and control, command and telemetry for control of the experiments and subsystem health monitoring, and software computations. The avionics system includes a flight qualified electrical power branching distributor, and a system control unit based on the Intel 8086 microprocessor. Data can be recorded on magnetic tape or transmitted to the ground. Finally, a Freon pump and cold plate system provides environmental control for both the avionics hardware and the experiments as necessary.

Stereo Electro-optical Tracking System (SETS)

The SETS is a remote, non-contacting, high-accuracy tracking system for the measurement of deflection of models in the National Transonic Facility at Langley Research Center. The system consists of four electronically scanned image dissector trackers which locate the position of Light Emitting Diodes embedded in the wing or body of aircraft models. Target location data is recorded on magnetic tape for later 3-D processing. Up to 63 targets per model may be tracked at typical rates of 1280 targets per second and to precision of 0.02mm at the target under the cold (-193 C) environment of the NTF tunnel.

Conclusion of Viking Lander Imaging Investigation: Picture catalog of experiment data record

The images returned by the two Viking landers during the Viking Survey Mission are presented in this report. Listing of supplemental information which describe the conditions under which the images were acquired are included. Subsets of the images are listed in a variety of sequences to aid in locating images of interest. The format and organization of the digital magnetic tape storage of the images are described. A brief description of the mission and the camera system is also included.

Geographic variation in the relationships of temperature, salinity or sigma sub t versus plant nutrient concentrations in the world ocean

A NODC data set representing all regions of the world ocean was analyzed for temperature and sigma-t relationships with nitrate, phosphate or silicic acid. Six cubic regressions were for each ten degree square of latitude and longitude containing adequate data. World maps display the locations that allow the prediction of plant nutrient concentrations from temperature or sigma-t. Geographic coverage improves along the sequence: nitrate, phosphate, and silicic acid and is better for sigma-t than for temperature. Contour maps of the approximate temperature of sigma-t at which these nitrients are no longer measurable in a parcel of water are generated, based on a percentile analysis of the temperature or sigma-t at which less than a selected amount of plant nutrient occurs. Results are stored on magnetic tape in tabular form. The global potential to predict plant nutrient concentrations from remotely sensed temperature of sigma-t and to emphasize the latitudinally and longitudinally changing phytoplankton growth environment in present and past oceans is demonstrated.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Stellar Spectrophotometric Atlas, 3130 A lambda 10800 A of Gunn and Stryker (1983)

The machine-readable version of the Atlas as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center is described. The data were obtained with the Oke multichannel scanner on the 5-meter Hale reflector for purposes of synthesizing galaxy spectra, and the digitized Atlas contains normalized spectral energy distributions, computed colors, scan line and continuum indices for 175 selected stars covering the complete ranges of spectral type and luminosity class. The documentation includes a byte-by-byte format description, a table of the indigenous characteristics of the magnetic tape file, and a sample listing of logical records exactly as they are recorded on the tape.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of A Library of Stellar Spectra (Jacoby, Hunter and Christian 1984)

The machine readable library as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center is described. The library contains digital spectral for 161 stars of spectral classes O through M and luminosity classes 1, 3 and 5 in the wavelength range 3510 A to 7427 A. The resolution is approximately 4.5 A, while the typical photometric uncertainty of each resolution element is approximately 1 percent and broadband variations are 3 percent. The documentation includes a format description, a table of the indigenous characteristics of the magnetic tape file, and a sample listing of logical records exactly as they are recorded on the tape.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Revised S210 Catalog of Far-Ultraviolet Objects (Page, Carruthers and Heckathorn 1982)

A detailed description of the machine-readable revised catalog as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center is given. This catalog of star images was compiled from imagery obtained by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Far-Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph (Experiments S201) operated from 21 to 23 April 1972 on the lunar surface during the Apollo 16 mission. The documentation includes a detailed data format description, a table of indigenous characteristics of the magnetic tape file, and a sample listing of data records exactly as they are presented in the machine-readable version.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Cordoba Durchmusterung (CD)

The machine-readable version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center, is presented. The complete catalog is contained in the magnetic tape file, and corrections published in all corrigenda were made to the data. The machine version contains 613959 records, but only 613953 stars (six stars were later deleted, but their logical records are retained in the file so that the zone counts are not different from the published catalog).

The machine-readable version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center, is described. The complete catalog is contained in the magnetic tape file, and corrections published in all errata have been made to the data. The machine version contains 454877 records, but only 454875 stars (two stars were later deleted, but their logical records are retained in the file so that the zone counts are not diiferent from the published catalog).

Documentation for the machine readable version of the Yale Catalogue of the Positions and Proper Motions of Stars between Declinations -60 deg and -70 deg (Fallon 1983)

The machine-readable, character-coded version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center(ADC), is described. The format and data provided in the magnetic tape version differ somewhat from those of the published catalog, which was also produced from a tape prepared at the ADC. The primary catalog data are positions and proper motions (equinox 1950.0) for 14597 stars.

Forth system for coherent-scatter radar data acquisition and processing

A real time collection system was developed for the Urbana coherent scatter radar system. The new system, designed for use with a microcomputer, has several advantages over the old system implemented with a minicomputer. The software used to collect the data is described as well as the processing software used to analyze the data. In addition a magnetic tape format for coherent scatter data exchange is given.

Measured effects of wind turbine generation at the Block Island Power Company

Data measurements made on the NASA MOD-OA 200-kw wind-turbine generator (WTG) installed on a utility grid form the basis for an overall performance analysis. Fuel displacement/-savings, dynamic interactions, and WTG excitation (reactive-power) control effects are studied. Continuous recording of a large number of electrical and mechanical variables on FM magnetic tape permit evaluation and correlation of phenomena over a bandwidth of at least 20 Hz. Because the wind-power penetration reached peaks of 60 percent, the impact of wind fluctuation and wind-turbine/diesel-utility interaction is evaluated in a worst-case scenario. The speed-governor dynamics of the diesel units exhibited an underdamped response, and the utility operation procedures were not altered to optimize overall WTG/utility performance. Primary findings over the data collection period are: a calculated 6.7-percent reduction in fuel consumption while generating 11 percent of the total electrical energy; acceptable system voltage and frequency fluctuations with WTG connected; and applicability of WTG excitation schemes using voltage, power, or VARS as the controlled variable.

CCD use at Lick Observatory

The CCD detector and data handling system in regular use at Lick Observatory are described. A grism system has been installed on the automated Cassegrain spectrograph at the Shane 3-meter telescope. A very compact CCD cooling system has been developed using a commercial gas expansion refrigerator; the dewar is a cylinder 15 cm in diameter and 6 cm high. The data acquisition computer, an LSI 11/23 with 256 kbyte RAM, 160 Mbyte Winchester disk, and color video display, provides for FITS format magnetic tape storage as well as preliminary analysis of images and spectra. The 3-meter telescope spectrographic system uses a 500 x 500 pixel thinned CCD. Design information and operational experience for these detector systems are presented along with some results to illustrate the quality of the data being obtained and the current limitations of the CCD detectors and data system.

A finding list for the multiplet tables of NSRDS-NBS3, Sections 1-10

The preparation of a magnetic-tape finding list for the first 10 sections of the U.S. National Bureau of Standards Reference Data System (NSRDS-NBS3) tables of optical multiplets of astrophysical interest (Moore, 1965-1983) is reported. The format of the list is described, and a sample page is provided.

Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalog

This report describes a computer accessible catalogue of submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 10000 GHz (i.e., wavelengths longer than 30 micrometers). The catalogue can be used as a planning guide or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, lower state energy, and quantum number assignment. The catalogue has been constructed using theoretical least squares fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalogue will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings (151 species) as new data appear. The catalogue is available from the authors as a magnetic tape recorded in card images and as a set of microfiche records.
