Considerations for accurately determining the maximum power output of solar cells

The most important single electrical parameter characterizing solar cell performance is Pm, the cell's maximum power output. In order to experimentally determine Pm it is necessary accurately to control both illumination and cell temperature during measurements. Two quite different measurement approaches can be used: an equilibrium method and a transient flash method. Both techniques are discussed in the paper in detail.

Control of XeF laser output by pulse injection

Injection locking is investigated as a means for control of optical pulse duration and polarization in a XeF laser. Intense short-pulse generation in the ultraviolet is achieved by injection of a low-level 1-ns optical pulse into a XeF oscillator. Control of laser output polarization by injection locking is demonstrated and studied as a function of injected signal level. Enhancement of XeF electric-discharge laser efficiency by injection pulse 'priming' is observed.

Output feedback non-linear decoupled control synthesis and observer design for manoeuvring aircraft

A study of the applicability of nonlinear decoupling theory to the design of control systems using output feedback for maneuvering aircraft is presented. The response variables chosen for decoupled control were angular velocity components along roll, pitch, and yaw axes, angle of attack (p), and angle of sideslip, using aileron, rudder, and elevator controls. An observer design for a class of nonlinear systems was presented and this method was used to estimate angle of attack and sideslip; an approximate observer was obtained by neglecting derivatives of p and aileron deflection angles and it was used in a simulation study. A simulation study showed that precise rapid combined lateral and longitudinal maneuvers can be performed; it was also demonstrated that a bank-angle-command outer loop could be designed for precise bank angles changes and simultaneous large lift maneuvers.

Mechanical energy output of the 5 September 1973 flare

The mechanical energy flux of observed macroscopic mass plasma motions in the solar flare of Sept. 5, 1973, is estimated. Consideration is given to the cool eruptive material in the eruptive filament and large surge as revealed by H alpha observations, the moving emission front seen in Ca II as well as H alpha, the piston-driven shock and mass ejection coronal transient observed in radio spectra and flare core motions, and mechanical energy estimates of 5.6 x 10 to the 29th to 8.9 x 10 to the 30th, 9.0 x 10 to the 29th, 2 x 10 to the 30th (thermal) and 10 to the 31st (magnetic), and 9 x 10 to the 24th erg are obtained, respectively, in agreement with previous estimates. It is concluded that the mechanical energy of large-scale mass motions dominates the radiative output of the flare by more than two orders of magnitude, and that a significant portion of the mechanical energy is in the form of magnetic flux delivered to interplanetary space.

Command system output bit verification

An automatic test was developed to test the ability of the deep space station (DSS) command subsystem and exciter to generate and radiate, from the exciter, the correct idle bit sequence for a given flight project or to store and radiate received command data elements and files without alteration. This test, called the command system output bit verification test, is an extension of the command system performance test (SPT) and can be selected as an SPT option. The test compares the bit stream radiated from the DSS exciter with reference sequences generated by the SPT software program. The command subsystem and exciter are verified when the bit stream and reference sequences are identical. It is a key element of the acceptance testing conducted on the command processor assembly (CPA) operational program (DMC-0584-OP-G) prior to its transfer from development to operations.

A tactile-output paging communication system for the deaf-blind

A radio frequency paging communication system that has coded vibrotactile outputs suitable for use by deaf-blind people was developed. In concept, the system consists of a base station transmitting and receiving unit and many on-body transmitting and receiving units. The completed system has seven operating modes: fire alarm; time signal; repeated single character Morse code; manual Morse code; emergency aid request; operational status test; and message acknowledge. The on-body units can be addressed in three ways: all units; a group of units; or an individual unit. All the functions developed were integrated into a single package that can be worn on the user's wrist. The control portion of the on-body unit is implemented by a microcomputer. The microcomputer is packaged in a custom-designed hybrid circuit to reduce its physical size.

Scaled Runge-Kutta algorithms for handling dense output

Low order Runge-Kutta algorithms are developed which determine the solution of a system of ordinary differential equations at any point within a given integration step, as well as at the end of each step. The scaled Runge-Kutta methods are designed to be used with existing Runge-Kutta formulas, using the derivative evaluations of these defining algorithms as the core of the system. For a slight increase in computing time, the solution may be generated within the integration step, improving the efficiency of the Runge-Kutta algorithms, since the step length need no longer be severely reduced to coincide with the desired output point. Scaled Runge-Kutta algorithms are presented for orders 3 through 5, along with accuracy comparisons between the defining algorithms and their scaled versions for a test problem.

Steady generation of aerosols with an improved constant output atomizer

It is common practice to generate laboratory aerosols of soluble materials with pneumatic atomizers. In a typical device, a solution of the substance to be aerosolized is injected into a jet of air and the liquid is broken up into very small droplets. After forced evaporation, a dry aerosol of the solute is produced. A number of commercially available devices were tested, and despite differences in design, all the atomizers tested suffered from short- and/or long-term fluctuations of their output particle number concentrations. The mechanisms responsible for atomizer instabilities are discussed and methods for alleviating these problems are considered.

Sensitivity of geographic information system outputs to errors in remotely sensed data

The sensitivity of the outputs of a geographic information system (GIS) to errors in inputs derived from remotely sensed data (RSD) is investigated using a suitability model with per-cell decisions and a gridded geographic data base whose cells are larger than the RSD pixels. The process of preparing RSD as input to a GIS is analyzed, and the errors associated with classification and registration are examined. In the case of the model considered, it is found that the errors caused during classification and registration are partially compensated by the aggregation of pixels. The compensation is quantified by means of an analytical model, a Monte Carlo simulation, and experiments with Landsat data. The results show that error reductions of the order of 50% occur because of aggregation when 25 pixels of RSD are used per cell in the geographic data base.

LANDSAT-D accelerated payload correction subsystem output computer compatible tape format

The NASA GSFC LANDSAT-D Ground Segment (GS) is developing an Accelerated Payload Correction Subsystem (APCS) to provide Thematic Mapper (TM) image correction data to be used outside the GS. This correction data is computed from a subset of the TM Payload Correction Data (PCD), which is downlinked from the spacecraft in a 32 Kbps data stream, and mirror scan correction data (MSCD), which is extracted from the wideband video data. This correction data is generated in the GS Thematic Mapper Mission Management Facility (MMF-T), and is recorded on a 9-track 1600 bit per inch computer compatible tape (CCT). This CCT is known as a APCS Output CCT (AOT). The AOT follows standardized corrections with respect to data formats, record construction and record identification. Applicable documents are delineated; common conventions which are used in further defining the structure, format and content of the AOT are defined; and the structure and content of the AOT are described.

Approximation to the Probability Density at the Output of a Photmultiplier Tube

The probability density of the integrated output of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) is approximated by the Gaussian, Rayleigh, and Gamma probability densities. The accuracy of the approximations depends on the signal energy alpha: the Gamma distribution is accurate for all alpha, the Raleigh distribution is accurate for small alpha (approximate or less than 1 photon) and the Gaussian distribution is accurate for large alpha (approximate or greater than 10 photons).
