Regional Geologic Cross Sections for Potential Storage and Containment Zones in the MRCSP Region [plus Plates 1-6]

The regional characterization work conducted by the Geoteams during the MRCSP Phase III project period (2010 –2019) focused on the following tasks: (1) refinement of geologic seals/reservoir systems; (2) assessment of Atlantic Coastal Plain and offshore opportunities; (3) expanded assessments of oil and gas fields, particularly as they relate to enhanced recovery opportunities; (4) regional support for implementation of carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) in the partnership area; and (5) communication and data sharing. This report, entitled Regional Geology, has been prepared in association with (4), regional support for implementation of CCUS in the partnership area..

A parallel-plate avalanche counter for the prompt fission neutron spectrum measurement

Neutrons, gamma’s, and fission fragments are among the prompt fission observables. Their precision measurements are fundamental to advance our understanding of fission and any application of fission. For our programmatic need, the χ matrix, which defines as the outgoing neutron spectrum as a function of incoming neutron energy, is sparsely populated and poorly measured for 233,235,238 U and 239,240 Pu. To improve the quality of those χ matrices, a joint LANLLLNL project was undertaken to measure their prompt fission neutron spectra at the LANSCE/WNR facility using neutron detector arrays and a charged-particle detector for the fission-fragment detection. A typical setup is shown in Fig. 1, where one of neutron detector array with a charged-particle detector is given.

Lambda Plate Seal for HFVMTF Anticryostat

Fermilab is currently designing a High Field Vertical Magnet Test Facility in order to test superconducting cables and magnets. The goal of this project was to analyze the thermal performance of three different seal designs and provide recommendations for the HFVMTF.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments using High 240 Pu Content Plutonium/Aluminum Zero Power Research Reactor Plates with Polyethylene Moderator (IER 520 Final Design CED-2 Report)

The US Department of Energy Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) convened a multinational Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) meeting in July of 2011 to discuss the data and experimental needs of criticality safety practitioners. The number one and two priority integral experiment data needs were for 239 Pu and 240 Pu, with special emphasis on cross section performance in the intermediate energy range (from 0.625 eV to 100 keV). LLNL measured five critical configurations with LANL for the plutonium test bed (IER-184) and published the experiments as International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project evaluation PUMET-MIXED-002. Modeling of the benchmark configurations using ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data showed significant overprediction of reactivity for configurations that had a large percentage of fissions in the intermediate energy regime. This report documents a variation on the TEX plutonium test bed to provide a test of 240 Pu cross sections, with sensitivity of the configuration to 240 Pu radiative capture and fission cross sections a priority for the design.

Numerical Modeling of the Effects of Coating Plates on Terminal Ballistic Performance

This report deals with the development and evaluation of a numerical model to examine applied coating to a metal substrate subjected to a ballistic impact. The numerical model will be used to examine the benefit of the coating in resisting penetration due to the impact. For a detailed examination the Retch-Ipson curve is used as a metric. The numerical data is plotted and then fit to the Retch-Ipson curve and error calculations are used to compare the difference between the numerical output and the experimental data. This initial study is an examination of a few shortcomings of the standard material models used, and demonstrate the future work that is needed to understand the ballistic behavior of materials.

Experimental Study of Fixed Plate Insert for Window Protection

Evidenced from experiments to date, NorthStar can expect that potentially significant changes in the target cooling passages are likely due to disk shape changes by thermal distortions or breakage. In the bulk of the target the result will be increased He flow in some channels and decreased flow in others.

Parallel-Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) Fabrication for 240 Pu PFNS Measurement [Slides]

A LANL-LLNL joint program has been developed successfully to measure PFNS and established the most precisely determined $\chi$ matrices for 235,238 U and 239 Pu. It has been extended to 240 Pu now and possibly to 233 U in the future. An alternative method was developed to fabricate 240 Pu and a total of 12 targets were made with a total mass of 17.9 mg. The PFNS measurement for 240 Pu will begin in June, 2022 when the new beam cycle starts and the data analysis follows immediately afterward.

Modeling of Radiolytic Hydrogen Generation of Irradiated Surrogate Aluminum Plates

The hydrogen generation from oxyhydroxide layers under irradiation is an important effect to understand for the long-term storage of aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuel. The original chemical model shows steady production of hydrogen from aluminum oxyhydroxide layers, with no roll-over effect in the curves of the hydrogen concentration until significant pressure has built up within the canister. This study uses a variety of kinetic fits to adjust the old chemical model to have roll-over effects that are consistent with new high-dose experiments. The data from aluminum 6061 coupon tests at high doses were used to fit several kinetic models. The 6061 aluminum samples are representative of the aluminum-clad fuel from the ATR. The fitted kinetic models were then used in a model of a mini-canister with much higher packing density to determine which kinetic rates would fit both sets of experimental tests. The rate constants for the kinetic mechanisms that were close were then tweaked such that the chemical models fit both the experimental data from the capsule tests and the data from the mini-canister tests. The kinetic models which fit the best are either inhibition by hydrogen, or a back reaction wherein H radical is reabsorbed onto the oxyhydroxide layer. The H back reaction rolls over quicker and may fit future collected data.

TEX-HEU Baseline Assemblies: Highly Enriched Uranium Plates with Polyethylene Moderator and Polyethylene Reflector (IER-297 CED-4b Report)

This experiment provides the baseline experimental configurations for TEX-HEU. The purpose of the TEX-HEU design is to provide multiple configurations that span the entire neutron energy spectrum and can be easily modified to incorporate diluent materials. Future experiments utilizing the TEX-HEU design are planned to incorporate hafnium, lithium, and chlorine as diluent materials. Five experimental configurations were judged to be acceptable critical benchmark experiments.
