Consideration of HTS rapid-cycling magnet for staged muon acceleration

The HTS conductor hysteresis dominates magnet cable power loss but is independent of the magnetic field ramping rate. This makes the HTS conductor suitable to power the rapid-cycling accelerator magnet. We present a possible application of the HTS rapid-cycling magnet as outlined in [1,2] for the staged muon acceleration including the front-end Recirculating Linear Accelerator and the followed-up Rapid Cycling Synchrotrons delivering the muon beams to the Muon Collider.[1] H. Understanding caprock behavior during underground hydrogen storage in depleted gas fields

The poster presents the results of pycnometric analysis of Marcellus and Wolfcamp shales subject to cyclic hydrogen exposure. Results indicate that continued hydrogen exposure results in the increase in matrix permeability and porosity in certain shale types, such as Marcellus. This change is physical in nature, due to the likely creation of microfractures at grain boundaries.

The International Conference on Surface Plasmon Photonics 10

The International Conference on Surface Plasmon Photonics (SPP Conference) is widely regarded as the premier global conference in nanoscale photonics. The SPP10 meeting was held in the United States for the first time, at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on May 21-26, 2023. This conference was an outstanding venue for communicating research breakthroughs and accomplishments in the represented fields, as well as for visibility, networking, and recruiting, for students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty throughout the US and the world as they attended this conference. The SPP10 conference hosted sessions on fundamental science, innovations, and applications in modern photonics with high potential for commercialization. Plenary sessions, invited talks from leading scientists in the field, and contributed talks from the larger photonics community on highly multidisciplinary topics of Quantum Plasmonics and Photonics; Energy Harvesting and Plasmonic Chemistry; Active Photonics and Devices; Ultrafast and Nonlinear Phenomena; and Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. The meeting schedule includes 3 plenary speakers, 31 Invited talks and 58 contributed talks. There were three well attended poster sessions which included lively discussions. Lunch time in the University Colleges allowed unstructured time for additional networking and discussions. The attendees represented the spectrum of endeavor in this field coming from academia, industry, and government laboratories, both U.S. and foreign scientists, senior researchers, young investigators, and students. The co-chairs of the conference were Prof. Naomi Halas and Prof. Peter Nordlander. The grant from DoE supported student’s and early career scientist’s registration and housing on campus.

The Absolute Color Calibration of the Dark Energy Survey: A Spectrophotometric Sample of DA White Dwarfs in the Southern Sky

The Dark Energy Survey (DES), which is nearing the completion of the analysis of its full data set, is an imaging survey of one-quarter of the Southern sky down to an apparent magnitude of $i\sim24.5$. The survey observations were conducted between 2013 and 2019 with a 3-square-degree wide-field CCD mosaic camera (the Dark Energy Camera, or DECam) on the Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in the Chilean Andes. The primary scientific goal of the DES was to measure properties of Dark Energy. In order to achieve its science goals, the DES had tight requirements on both its relative and absolute photometric calibrations. In this poster, we describe the sample of pure-hydrogen-atmosphere (“DA”) white dwarfs which were instrumental in working to establish the requirement on the absolute color calibration -- i.e., the calibration across the filter bands -- of the DES.

TinyTPC - A Test Stand for Photosensitive Dopants

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are widely used to study accelerator neutrinos. Since LArTPCs are sensitive down to 10– 100 keV, neutrino experiments' physics programs could be extended to lower energies. However, in this scale, LArTPCs' energy resolution is significantly degraded because only charge is collected efficiently. One solution is the introduction of photosensitive dopants, which convert scintillation light to ionization yield. We have built a test stand (TinyTPC) with a LArPix pixelated anode plane and an active mass of 2.1 kg to study these charge enhancements. Our plan is to measure TinyTPC’s energy resolution with and without dopants using radioactive sources. This poster presentation will discuss TinyTPC's status and goals.

Performance Analysis of Phase 2 Tracker Upgrade Ps Module before and after Irradiation

The Large Hadron Collider will undergo a luminosity upgrade targeting a peak instantaneous luminosity ranging from 5–7.5×1034 cm−2s−1. The ambitious goal of the High Luminosity LHC is to achieve a total of 3000–4000 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13–14 TeV by 2029. To cope with such challenging environmental conditions, the outer tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using closely spaced silicon sensors (pixels and strips) to provide tracking information at the Level-1 trigger. A PS-Module, composed of both a pixel and a strip sensor, was tested at the Fermilab Test-Beam Facility to evaluate its ability to provide accurate tracking information, Pt discrimination capabilities, and optimal performance at the irradiation levels expected after being exposed to the harsh conditions of the High Luminosity LHC. The results of the test and the comparison of the module performance before and after irradiation will be presented in this poster

Measuring the Multi-Neutron Antineutrino Cross Section at Low Charged Hadron Energy in MINERvA

Current and future accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments need neutrino interaction models with smaller systematic uncertainties to resolve much of delta CP phase space. Final state interactions (FSI) and scattering off of correlated nuclei (2p2h) are poorly understood processes that currently contribute large uncertainties to leading models. These processes have proven difficult to study because they often produce relatively low energy nucleons. Protons up to about 100 MeV are below the detection threshold of some accelerator neutrino detectors, and neutrons are usually discounted as undetectable. This poster presents a measurement of the multi-neutron antineutrino cross section at low available energy using the MINERvA detector at Fermilab. This interaction channel is particularly sensitive to FSI and 2p2h interactions. A sideband-driven background constraint that greatly reduces uncertainties on the result will be presented. The measured cross section is compared to GENIE v3 models with different FSI treatments and the SuSA model's 2p2h predictions.
