A north-south stationkeeping ion thruster system for ATS-F

A one millipound cesium ion thruster system experiment designed for the ATS-F satellite will be used to demonstrate north-south stationkeeping for synchronous satellites. Development effort leading to the present design will be described and test data for qualification and flight acceptance tests will be presented. These include a review of EMI evaluations tests made with the power conditioning subsystem and the thruster simulator, and an extended system operational test. During the extended test, 90 on-off cycles simulated thruster operation in orbit. A planned 18,000 hour ground test of a flight qualified thruster will be discussed.

Thermal design and test of a high power spacecraft transponder platform

The high power transponder subsystem on board the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) requires some unique thermal control techniques to maintain the required temperature limits throughout all mission phases. The transponder subsystem includes redundant 20-W output travelling wave tubes and a single 200-W output TWT with highly concentrated thermal dissipations of 70 W and 143 W, respectively. A thermal control system which maintains all components within the required temperature ranges has been designed and verified in thermal balance testing. Included in the design are second surface quartz mirrors on an aluminum honeycomb platform, high thermal conductivity aluminum doubler plates, commandable thermal control heaters and a Variable Conductance Heat Pipe System (VCHPS).

Development of an 8-cm engineering model thruster system

Electric propulsion has been shown to offer major advantages over the techniques currently employed for the control of earth satellites. For a user to realize these advantages, however, requires the availability of a proven, operationally flight-ready propulsion system. Currently an Engineering Model of an 8-cm ion thruster propulsion system is under development. The system includes the thruster unit with its associated reservoir, thruster gimbaling subsystem, and power processing unit. This paper describes the EM System with special emphasis on hardware design and system performance.

Silicon solar photovoltaic power stations

Modular design of components and arrays, cost estimates for modules and support structures, and cost/performance analysis of a central solar photovoltaic power plant are discussed. Costs of collector/reflector arrays are judged the dominant element in the total capital investment. High-concentration solar tracking arrays are recommended as the most economic means for producing solar photovoltaic energy when solar cells costs are high ($500 per kW generated). Capital costs for power conditioning subsystem components are itemized and system busbar energy costs are discussed at length.

Reactor design and integration into a nuclear electric spacecraft

One of the well-defined applications for nuclear power in space is nuclear electric propulsion (NEP). Mission studies have identified the optimum power level (400 kWe). A single Shuttle launch requirement and science-package integration have added additional constraints to the design. A reactor design which will meet these constraints has been studied. The reactor employs 90 fuel elements, each heat pipe cooled. Reactor control is obtained with BeO/B4C drums in a BeO reflector. The balance of the spacecraft is shielded from the reactor with LiH. Power conditioning and reactor control drum drives are located behind the LiH with the power conditioning. Launch safety, mechanical design and integration with the power conversion subsystem are discussed.

Solar thermal power systems point-focusing distributed receiver /PFDR/ technology - A project description

The goal of the Project is to support the industrial development of PFDR technology that will provide favorable life-cycle costs per unit of electrical or thermal energy produced. The technology will be made available in the early 1980s for applications project experiments. PFDR systems utilize concentrator dishes to furnish energy to their own individual receivers and power conversion subsystems. Initial effort is with steam Rankine and gas Brayton cycles. Periodic assessments will be made to confirm or change the cycles initially selected. Subsystems will be designed, fabricated and tested together in modules as appropriate. This paper describes PFDR systems briefly, outlines the project goals and organization, discusses the plans and current status of the project, and lists the benefits of PFDR technology concepts.

Beam builder for space fabrication

Construction of a beam builder for producing triangular truss aluminum beams for use on large space structures is described. The machine will fabricate 0.04 cm thick 2024-T3 aluminum alloy into beams weighing 1.265 kg-m with side braces spot-welded to end caps to fabricate a triangular truss configuration up to 305 m long. The design characteristics, the electrical subsystems, the power requirements of the spot welding equipment, and the computer system for coordinating the motion of the Yoder rolling mills for forming caps from aluminum coils are described. Spot welding was compared with ultrasonic welding, stapling, wire stitching, riveting, grommets, stamp-lok, and pierce and fold joining methods with respect to ease of operation, safety, practicality, and ease of energy consumption. The beam builder will be evaluated to identify design requirements which can be utilized for the space flight version of its concept.

Heat pipe heat rejection system and demonstration model for the nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) spacecraft

The critical evaluation and subsequent redesign of the power conversion subsystem of the spacecraft are covered. As part of that evaluation and redesign, prototype heat pipe components for the heat rejection system were designed fabricated and tested. Based on the results of these tests in conjunction with changing mission requirements and changing energy conversion devices, new system designs were investigated. The initial evaluation and redesign was based on state-of-the-art fabrication and assembly techniques for high temperature liquid metal heat pipes and energy conversion devices. The hardware evaluation demonstrated the validity of several complicated heat pipe geometries and wick structures, including an annular-to-circular transition, bends in the heat pipe, long heat pipe condensers and arterial wicks. Additionally, a heat pipe computer model was developed which describes the end point temperature profile of long radiator heat pipes to within several degrees celsius.
