Near-threshold states in coupled D D * − D * D * scattering from lattice QCD

The first determination of doubly charmed isospin-0 coupled-channel D D * − D * D * scattering amplitudes from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is presented. The finite-volume spectrum is computed for three lattice volumes with a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV and is used to extract the scattering amplitudes in J P = 1 + via the Lüscher quantization condition. By analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes to complex energies, a T c c pole corresponding to a virtual bound state is found below D D * threshold. We also find a second pole, T c c ′ , corresponding to a resonance pole below the kinematically closed D * D * channel, to which it has a strong coupling. A nonzero coupling is robustly found between the S -wave D D * and D * D * channels producing a clear cusp in the D D * amplitude at the D * D * threshold energy. This suggests that the experimental T c c ′ should be observable in D D * and D * D * final states at ongoing experiments. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Nonperturbative aspects of the electromagnetic pion form factor at high energies

The structure of hadronic form factors at high energies and their deviations from perturbative quantum chromodynamics provide insight on nonperturbative dynamics. Using an approach that is consistent with dispersion relations, we construct a model that simultaneously accounts for the pion wave function, gluonic exchanges, and quark Reggeization. In particular, we find that quark Reggeization can be investigated at high energies by studying scaling violation of the form factor.

Physical-mass calculation of ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonance parameters via π π and K π scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD

We present our study of the ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonances from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) employing domain-wall fermions at physical quark masses. We determine the finite-volume energy spectrum in various momentum frames and obtain phase-shift parametrizations via the Lüscher formalism and as a final step the complex resonance poles of the π π and K π elastic scattering amplitudes via an analytical continuation of the models. By sampling a large number of representative sets of underlying energy-level fits, we also assign a systematic uncertainty to our final results. This is a significant extension to data-driven analysis methods that have been used in lattice QCD to date, due to the two-step nature of the formalism. Our final pole positions, M + i Γ / 2 , with all statistical and systematic errors exposed, are M K * = 893 ( 2 ) ( 8 ) ( 54 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ K * = 51 ( 2 ) ( 11 ) ( 3 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the K * ( 892 ) resonance and M ρ = 796 ( 5 ) ( 15 ) ( 48 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ ρ = 192 ( 10 ) ( 28 ) ( 12 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the ρ ( 770 ) resonance. The four differently grouped sources of uncertainties are, in the order of occurrence: statistical, data-driven systematic, an estimation of systematic effects beyond our computation (dominated by the fact that we employ a single lattice spacing), and the error from the scale-setting uncertainty on our ensemble. QCD moat regime and its real-time properties

Dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter may exhibit crystalline phases. Their existence is reflected in a moat regime, where mesonic correlations feature spatial modulations. We study the real-time properties of pions at finite temperature and density in QCD in order to elucidate the nature of this regime. We show that the moat regime arises from particle-hole-like fluctuations near the Fermi surface. This gives rise to a characteristic peak in the spectral function of the pion at nonzero spacelike momentum. This peak can be interpreted as a new quasi particle, the moaton. In addition, our framework also allows us to directly test the stability of the homogeneous chiral phase against the formation of an inhomogeneous condensate in QCD. We find that an inhomogeneous instability is highly unlikely for baryon chemical potentials μ B ≤ 630 MeV . Published by the American Physical Society 2025

alaric parton shower for hadron colliders

We introduce the parton shower for simulating quantum chromodynamics (QCD) radiation at hadron colliders and present numerical results from an implementation in the event generator . provides a consistent framework to quantify certain systematic uncertainties which cannot be eliminated by comparing the parton shower with analytic resummation. In particular, it allows us to study recoil effects away from the soft and collinear limits without the need to change the evolution variable or the splitting functions. We assess the performance of in Drell-Yan lepton pair and QCD jet production, and present the first multijet merging for the new algorithm. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Time-delayed gamma-ray signatures of heavy axions from core-collapse supernovae

Heavy axions that couple to both quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics with masses on the order of MeV–GeV and high-scale decay constants in excess of ∼ 10 8 GeV may arise generically in, e.g., axiverse constructions. In this work we provide the most sensitive search to date for the existence of such heavy axions using Fermi-LAT data toward four recent supernovae (SN): Cassiopea A, SN1987A, SN2023ixf, and SN2024ggi. We account for heavy axion production in the proto-neutron-star cores through nuclear and electromagnetic processes and then the subsequent decay of the axions into photons. While previous works have searched for gamma rays from SN1987A using the Solar Maximum Mission that observed SN1987A during the SN itself, we show that using Fermi Large Area Telescope data provides an approximately 5 orders of magnitude improvement in flux sensitivity for axions with lifetimes larger than around 10 yrs. We find no evidence for heavy axions and exclude large regions of previously unexplored parameter space.

Constraints on the finite volume two-nucleon spectrum at 𝑚𝜋 ≈806 MeV

The low-energy, finite-volume spectrum of the two-nucleon system at a quark mass corresponding to a pion mass of 𝑚𝜋≈806 MeV is studied with lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) using variational methods. The interpolating-operator sets used in [Variational study of two-nucleon systems with lattice QCD, Phys. Rev. D 107, 094508 (2023).] are extended by including a complete basis of local hexaquark operators, as well as plane-wave dibaryon operators built from products of both positive- and negative-parity nucleon operators. Results are presented for the isosinglet and isotriplet two-nucleon channels. In both channels, noticeably weaker variational bounds on the lowest few energy eigenvalues are obtained from operator sets which contain only hexaquark operators or operators constructed from the product of two negative-parity nucleons, while other operator sets produce low-energy variational bounds which are consistent within statistical uncertainties. The consequences of these studies for the LQCD understanding of the two-nucleon spectrum are investigated.

Neutron Valence Structure from Nuclear Deep Inelastic Scattering

Mechanisms of spin-flavor SU(6) symmetry breaking in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied via an extraction of the free neutron structure function from a global analysis of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data on the proton and on nuclei from $A = 2$ (deuterium) to 208 (lead). Modification of the structure function of nucleons bound in atomic nuclei (known as the EMC effect) are consistently accounted for within the framework of a universal modification of nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. Our extracted neutron-to-proton structure function ratio $F_2^n/F_2^p$ becomes constant for $x_B \ge 0.6$, equalling $0.47 \pm 0.04$ as $x_B \rightarrow 1$, in agreement with theoretical predictions of perturbative QCD and the Dyson Schwinger equation, and in disagreement with predictions of the Scalar Diquark dominance model. Finally, we also predict $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, recently measured, yet unpublished, by the MARATHON collaboration, the nuclear correction function that is needed to extract $F_2^n/F_2^p$ from $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, and the theoretical uncertainty associated with this extraction.

Extended Search for the Invisible Axion with the Axion Dark Matter Experiment

This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range 2.81–3.31 µeV . This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first-stage signal amplifier.

Constraints on the $\chi_\mathrm{c1}$ versus $\chi_\mathrm{c2}$ Polarizations in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The polarizations of promptly produced χc1 and χc2 mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV. The χc states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χc→J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e+e−, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χc2 to χc1 yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ→μ+μ- decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum.

Symmetric Nuclear Matter from the Strong Interaction

We study the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at zero temperature over a wide range of densities using two complementary theoretical approaches. At low densities, up to twice nuclear saturation density, we compute the energy per particle based on modern nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory. For higher densities, we derive for the first time constraints in a Fierz-complete setting directly based on quantum chromodynamics using functional renormalization group techniques. Here, we find remarkable consistency of the results obtained from both approaches as they come together in density and the natural emergence of a maximum in the speed of sound 𝑐𝑆 at supranuclear densities. The presence of this maximum appears tightly connected to the formation of a diquark gap. Notably, this maximum is observed to exceed the asymptotic value 𝑐$^{2}_{𝑆}$ =1/3 while its exact position in terms of the density cannot yet be determined conclusively.

Ruling out Color Transparency in Quasielastic 12 C(e,e'p) up to Q 2 of 14.2 (GeV/c) 2

Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ = 8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. Additionally, the measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5 GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions. Furthermore, these results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect via Charge-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations Relative to Spectator and Participant Planes in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen with a significance of 1–3 standard deviations in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Furthermore, significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.
