The Artificial Intelligence Ontology: LLM-Assisted Construction of AI Concept Hierarchies

The Artificial Intelligence Ontology (AIO) is a systematization of artificial intelligence (AI) concepts, methodologies, and their interrelations. Developed via manual curation, with the additional assistance of large language models (LLMs), AIO aims to address the rapidly evolving landscape of AI by providing a comprehensive framework that encompasses both technical and ethical aspects of AI technologies. The primary audience for AIO includes AI researchers, developers, and educators seeking standardized terminology and concepts within the AI domain. We use the term “branches” for classes, and their subclasses, in our ontology that are subclasses of owl:Thing. AIO contains eight branches: Bias, Layer, Machine Learning Task, Mathematical Function, Model, Network, Preprocessing, and Training Strategy, each designed to support the modular composition of AI methods and facilitate a deeper understanding of deep learning architectures and ethical considerations in AI. AIO uses the Ontology Development Kit (ODK) for its creation and maintenance, with its content being more easily updated through AI-driven curation support. This approach not only ensures the ontology's relevance amidst the fast-paced advancements in AI but also significantly enhances its utility for researchers, developers, and educators by simplifying the integration of new AI concepts and methodologies. The ontology's utility is demonstrated through the annotation of AI methods data in a catalog of AI research publications and the integration into the BioPortal ontology resource, highlighting its potential for cross-disciplinary research. The AIO ontology is open source and is available on GitHub ( https://w3id.org/aio/ ) and BioPortal ( https://bioportal.bioontology.org/ontologies/AIO ).

Research and development of a luminol-carbon monoxide flow system

Adaption of the luminol-carbon monoxide injection system to a flowing type system is reported. Analysis of actual wastewater samples was carried out and revealed that bacteria can be associated with particles greater than 10 microns in size in samples such as mixed liquor. Research into the luminol reactive oxidation state indicates that oxidized iron porphyrins, cytochrome-c in particular, produce more luminol chemiluminescence than the reduced form. Correlation exists between the extent of porphyrin oxidation and relative chemiluminescence. In addition, the porphyrin nucleus is apparently destroyed under the current chemiluminescent reaction conditions.

New Developments and Research Findings: NASA Hydrazine Arcjets

In 1984, the market for commercial geosynchronous communications satellites (comsats) was expanding and there was strong competition between spacecraft builders for market share. The propellant required for the north-south stationkeeping (NSSK) function was a major mission limiter, and the small chemical and resistojet systems then in use were at or near their physical limits. Thus, conditions were right for the development of a high performance NSSK system, and after an extensive survey of both propulsion technologies and the aerospace community, the NASA program chose hydrazine arcjets for development. A joint government/industry development program ensued which culminated in the acceptance of arcjet technology. NASA efforts included fundamental feasibility assessments, hardware development and verification, and multiple efforts aimed at the demonstration of critical operational characteristics of arcjet systems. Throughout the program, constant contact with the user community was maintained to determine system requirements. Both contracted and cooperative programs with industry were supported. First generation, kW-class arcjets are now operational for NSSK on the Telstar 401 satellite launched in December of 1993 and are baselined for use on multiple future satellite series (Intelsat 8, AsiaSat, Echostar). Arcjet development efforts are now focusing on the development of both high performance (600 s), 2 kW thrusters for application on next generation comsats and low power (Pe approximately 0.5 kW) for a variety of applications on power limited satellites. This paper presents a review of the NASA's role in the development of hydrazine arcjets with a focus on approaches, lessons learned, and the future.

Satellite Detection of the Convection Generated Stresses in Earth

We review research developments on satellite detection of the convection generated stresses in the Earth for seismic hazard assessment and Earth resource survey. Particular emphasis is laid upon recent progress and results of stress calculations from which the origin and evolution of the tectonic features on Earth's surface can be scientifically addressed. An important aspect of the recent research development in tectonic stresses relative to earthquakes is the implications for earthquake forecasting and prediction. We have demonstrated that earthquakes occur on the ring of fire around the Pacific in response to the tectonic stresses induced by mantle convection. We propose a systematic global assessment of the seismic hazard based on variations of tectonic stresses in the Earth as observed by satellites. This space geodynamic approach for assessing the seismic hazard is unique in that it can pinpoint the triggering stresses for large earthquakes without ambiguities of geological structures, fault geometries, and other tectonic properties. Also, it is distinct from the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment models in the literature, which are based only on extrapolations of available earthquake data.
