Solid State Ultracapacitor

NASA analyzes, tests, packages, and fabricates electrical, electronic, and electromechanical (EEE) parts used in space vehicles. One area that NASA wishes to advance is energy storage and delivery. Currently, space vehicles use rechargeable batteries that utilize silver zinc or lithium ion electrochemical processes. These current state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries cannot be rapidly charged, contain harmful chemicals, and suffer from early wear-out mechanisms. A solid state ultracapacitor is an EEE part that offers significant advantages over current electrochemical and electrolytic devices. The objective of this research is to develop an internal barrier layer ultracapacitor (IBLC) using novel dielectric materials as a battery replacement with a focus on these advantages: longer life, lower mass-toweight ratio, rapid charging, on-demand pulse power, improved on-pad standby time without maintenance, and environmental friendliness. The approach is unique in two areas. A deposition technique is used that has been shown to produce a more uniformly coated nanoparticle than sol-gel, which has resulted in colossal permittivities. These particles are then distributed in an ink formulation developed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and deposited utilizing a 3D aerosol jet technique. This additive manufacturing technique controls layer thickness, resulting in extremely large capacitance and energy density.

Cryogenic Selective Surface - How Cold Can We Go?

Selective surfaces have wavelength dependent emissivitya bsorption. These surfaces can be designed to reflect solar radiation, while maximizing infrared emittance, yielding a cooling effect even in sunlight. On earth cooling to -50 C below ambient has been achieved, but in space, outside of the atmosphere, theory using ideal materials has predicted a maximum cooling to 40 K! If this result holds up for real world materials and conditions, then superconducting systems and cryogenic storage can be achieved in space without active cooling. Such a result would enable long term cryogenic storage in deep space and the use of large scale superconducting systems for such applications as galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) shielding and large scale energy storage.

Tracking the Short Term Planning (STP) Development Process

Part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration?s mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research is enhanced by discovering new scientific tools to improve life on earth. Sequentially, to successfully explore the unknown, there has to be a planning process that organizes certain events in the right priority. Therefore, the planning support team has to continually improve their processes so the ISS Mission Operations can operate smoothly and effectively. The planning support team consists of people in the Long Range Planning area that develop timelines that includes International Partner?s Preliminary STP inputs all the way through to publishing of the Final STP. Planning is a crucial part of the NASA community when it comes to planning the astronaut?s daily schedule in great detail. The STP Process is in need of improvement, because of the various tasks that are required to be broken down in order to get the overall objective of developing a Final STP done correctly. Then a new project came along in order to store various data in a more efficient database. "The SharePoint site is a Web site that provides a central storage and collaboration space for documents, information, and ideas."

Phase change energy storage for solar dynamic power systems

This paper presents the results of a transient computer simulation that was developed to study phase change energy storage techniques for Space Station Freedom (SSF) solar dynamic (SD) power systems. Such SD systems may be used in future growth SSF configurations. Two solar dynamic options are considered in this paper: Brayton and Rankine. Model elements consist of a single node receiver and concentrator, and takes into account overall heat engine efficiency and power distribution characteristics. The simulation not only computes the energy stored in the receiver phase change material (PCM), but also the amount of the PCM required for various combinations of load demands and power system mission constraints. For a solar dynamic power system in low earth orbit, the amount of stored PCM energy is calculated by balancing the solar energy input and the energy consumed by the loads corrected by an overall system efficiency. The model assumes an average 75 kW SD power system load profile which is connected to user loads via dedicated power distribution channels. The model then calculates the stored energy in the receiver and subsequently estimates the quantity of PCM necessary to meet peaking and contingency requirements. The model can also be used to conduct trade studies on the performance of SD power systems using different storage materials.

Determining the IV fluids required for a ten day medical emergency on Space Station Freedom - Comparison of packaged vs. on-orbit produced solutions

To aid planning for the storage of supplies onboard Space Station Freedom, an estimate was made of the amount of intravenous (IV) fluid required to support a patient who has suffered a medical emergency for a period of up to 10 days. Six different medical scenarios were evaluated, and the volume of IV fluids required for each scenario was estimated. Up to 220 liters of fluid would be required to support a patient for all of the scenarios. When optimizing the volumes to support any single scenario, a total of 123 liters is required. Use of a water polishing system to produce sterile water for injection from potable supplies and on-station formulation of IV fluids results in a smaller mass and volume requirement for the Fluid Therapy Subsystem than carrying prepackaged bags of fluid.

Accelerating the discovery of battery electrode materials through data mining and deep learning models

The availability of crystalline materials databases allows for building accurate machine learning (ML) models that can accelerate the exploration of materials chemical space for energy storage applications. In this work, we screen all inorganic materials included in the Materials Project and AFLOW databases as potential metal-ion battery electrodes. We develop an efficient protocol to mine and screen raw data in current databases and provide a new database of electrode materials by considering pairs of charged and discharged electrodes. This effort leads to a new database with over 190,000 instances, in contrast to the original battery database which contains about 5000. The expanded battery data set is then used to build regression-based deep neural network models for predicting average voltages and percentage volume changes upon charging and discharging, which present improvements of at least 28% for target properties with respect to previous models, and are now able to predict anode electrodes (low voltage region) as well as electrodes that will not work in electrochemical cells (negative voltages), overcoming the challenges identified in previous ML models for battery electrodes. Additionally, a further screening of the expanded database itself allowed us to identify 35 novel electrode candidates with excellent battery performance metrics.

Topology Optimization of Curved Electrodes with Suggested Simplified Corrugated Designs

The demand for space-efficient energy storage, from grid to device scale, has soared with the rapid electrification of society. To increase energy density while maintaining high rate performance, shaping electrodes has been shown to be an effective strategy. Computational optimization can suggest designs that improve energy storage performance; however, generated designs are often complex, leading to manufacturing challenges. Additionally, most optimization is typically conducted in standard rectangular domains, whereas some applications, such as in the aerospace industry or in consumer electronics, may benefit from optimized electrodes that fit in a nonstandard form factor. Here, in this work, we use topology optimization to design capacitive full-cell electrodes in a curved domain. We propose a simplified corrugated electrode design based on the optimization results and show that the energy stored in the simplified design is only reduced by about 5–27% when compared to that in the fully optimized design, with more deviation occurring when ionic transport in the porous electrode is particularly impeded. Overall, we find that these simplified designs are promising, particularly given the more conventional manufacturing techniques required, and have a 42–369% increase in energy stored compared to monolithic electrodes.

Solar heating system final design package

The system is composed of a warm air collector, a logic control unit and a universal switching and transport unit. The collector was originally conceived and designed as an integrated roof/wall system and therefore provides a dual function in the structure. The collector serves both as a solar energy conversion system and as a structural weather resistant skin. The control unit provides totally automatic control over the operation of the system. It receives input data from sensor probes in collectors, storage and living space. The logic was designed so as to make maximum use of solar energy and minimize use of conventional energy. The transport and switching unit is a high-efficiency air-handling system equipped with gear motor valves that respond to outputs from the control system. The fan unit was designed for maximum durability and efficiency in operation, and has permanently lubricated ball bearings and excellent air-handling efficiency.

Solar energy system performance evaluation. Seasonal report for SEECO Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska

The Solar Engineering and Equipment Company (SEECO) Lincoln solar energy system, designed for space heating only, is described and its operational performance for a 12 month period from April 1979 through March 1980 is evaluated. The system met 27 percent of the space heating load; however, system losses into the heated space from the storage bin and ductwork were significant. Reducing these losses would add appreciably to the system's efficiency. Net fossil energy savings were 11.31 million BTUs.

Estimating Transient Pressure Surges in Cryogenic Systems

Potentially-damaging pressure waves anticipated and, therefore, avoided. Mathematical model developed for prediction of pressure behavior in single-and two-phase cryogenic systems. Transient liquid-flow analysis modified to incorporate behavior of vapor bubbles and used to predict maximum pressure in cryogenic transfer systems consisting of complex pipe and valve arrangements under both steady-state and transient conditions. Simulation compared favorably with data obtained during transfer of liquid oxygen from ground storage tanks to Space Shuttle orbiter external tanks. Program written in FORTRAN 77 for batch execution.

Design consideration for magnetically suspended flywheel systems

Consideration is given to the design, fabrication, and testing of a magnetically suspended flywheel system for energy storage applications in space. The device is the prototype of a system combining passive suspension of the flywheel plate by samarium cobalt magnets and active control in the radial direction using eight separate magnetic coils. The bearing assembly was machined from a nickel-iron alloy, and the machine parts are all hydrogen annealed. Slots in the magnetic plate allow four independent quadrants for control. The motor/generator component of the system is a brushless dc-permanent magnetic/ironless engine using electronic communication. The system has been tested at over 2500 rpm with satisfactory results. The system characteristics of the flywheel for application in low earth orbit (LEO) are given in a table.
