Quiet turbofan STOL aircraft for short haul transportation, volume 1

The characteristics for a quiet turbofan short takeoff aircraft for short haul transportation applications are discussed. The following subjects are examined: (1) representative aircraft configurations, characteristics, and costs associated with the short haul aircraft development and operation, (2) critical technology and technology related problems to be resolved in successful introduction of representative short haul aircraft, (3) relationships between quiet short takeoff aircraft and the economic and social viability of short haul, and (4) identification of high payoff technology areas. In order to properly evaluate the candidate aircraft designs and to determine their economic viability and community acceptance, a real world scenario was developed and projected to 1990.

The NASA role in major areas of human concern: Transportation

After introducing some of the general factors that have affected progress in the transportation area, NASA program elements are examined to illustrate relevant points of contact. Interpretive steps are taken throughout the statement to show a few of the more important ways people's lives have been affected as a result of the work of NASA and other organizations functioning in this area. The principal documents used and interviews conducted are identified after the conclusion of this statement. This statement, it should be noted, is incomplete in many respects, primarily because it reflects only a small number of the technical, economic, and social forces affecting American life. Taken as a summary statement, however, it hopefully will provide a useful basis for better understanding NASA's role in the national attempt to upgrade the quality of transportation services.

A Delphi forecast of technology in education

The results are reported of a Delphi forecast of the utilization and social impacts of large-scale educational telecommunications technology. The focus is on both forecasting methodology and educational technology. The various methods of forecasting used by futurists are analyzed from the perspective of the most appropriate method for a prognosticator of educational technology, and review and critical analysis are presented of previous forecasts and studies. Graphic responses, summarized comments, and a scenario of education in 1990 are presented.

Some implications of the technology assessment function for the effective public decision-making process

A preliminary provisional assessment of the prospects for the establishment of an adequate technology assessment function and the implications of the assessment function for the public decision process are presented. Effects of the technology assessment function on each phase of the public decision process and briefly explored. Significant implications during the next decade are projected with respect to the following phases: invention and development of alternative means (technological configurations); evaluation, selection and promotion of preferred courses of action; and modification of statutory scheme or social action program as an outcome of continuing monitoring and appraisal.

Toward a second-generation supersonic transport.

A number of promising avenues of research and development are considered in relation to an advanced supersonic transport which has improved range/payload characteristics and lower airport noise and sonic boom than current-generation supersonic transports. The prospects for advanced technology suggest that a high lift-to-drag-ratio configuration incorporating advanced materials and control concepts and utilizing a variable-cycle engine or perhaps an advanced dry turbojet, will yield an advanced supersonic transport which is economically viable and socially acceptable. Hydrogen fuel offers great promise for future supersonic aircraft, however, the formidable problems associated with the use of such fuel probably precludes its use on any near term second-generation supersonic transport. The state of technology in some of the areas discussed is not very far advanced and, consequently, a major effort will be required to bring these technologies to a state of readiness on a timely basis.

Automating the design process - Progress, problems, prospects, potential.

The design process for large aerospace vehicles is discussed, with particular emphasis on structural design. Problems with current procedures are identified. Then, the contributions possible from automating the design process (defined as the best combination of men and computers) are considered. Progress toward automated design in the aerospace and other communities is reviewed, including NASA studies of the potential development of Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD). The need for and suggested directions of future research on the design process, both technical and social, are discussed. Although much progress has been made to exploit the computer in design, it is concluded that technology is available to begin using the computer to speed communications and management as well as calculations in the design process and thus build man-computer teams that can design better, faster and cheaper.
