Electronic relaxation dynamics in [Au 25 (SR) 18 ] -1 (R = CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 , MPA, PET) thiolate-protected nanoclusters

Here we investigate the excited electron dynamics in [Au 25 (SR) 18 ] -1 (R = CH3, C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 , MPA, PET) [MPA = mercaptopropanoic acid, PET = phenylethylthiol] nanoparticles to understand how different ligands affect the excited state dynamics in this system. The population dynamics of the core and higher excited states lying in the energy range 0.00–2.20 eV are studied using a surface hopping method with decoherence correction in a real-time DFT approach. All of the ligated clusters follow a similar trend in decay for the core states (S 1 –S 6 ). The observed time constants are on the picosecond time scale (2–19 ps), which agrees with the experimental time scale, and this study confirms that the time constants observed experimentally could originate from core-to-core transitions and not from core-to-semiring transitions. In the presence of higher excited states, R = H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 , and PET demonstrate similar relaxations trends whereas R = MPA shows slightly different relaxation of the core states due to a smaller gap between the LUMO+1 and LUMO+2 gap in its electronic structure. The S 1 (HOMO → LUMO) state gives the slowest decay in all ligated clusters, while S 7 has a relatively long decay. Furthermore, separate electron and hole relaxations were performed on the [Au 25 (SCH 3 ) 18 ] -1 nanocluster to understand how independent electron and hole relaxations contribute to the overall relaxation dynamics.

Air separation via two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on SrFeO 3-δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3-δ perovskite reduction/oxidation reactions to produce N 2 : rate limiting mechanism(s) determination

Two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on reversible reactions of SrFeO 3–δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites were considered for air separation. The cycle steps encompass (1) the thermal reduction of SrFeO 3–δ or (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites driven by concentrated solar irradiation and (2) oxidation in air to remove O 2 and produce N 2 . Rate limiting mechanisms were examined for both reactions using a combination of isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetry for temperature-swings between 673 and 1373 K, heating rates of 10, 20, and 50 K min –1 , and O 2 pressure-swings between 20% O 2 /Ar and 100% Ar at atmospheric pressure. Evolved O 2 and associated lag due to transport behavior were measured with gas chromatography and used with measured sample temperatures to predict equilibrium compositions from a compound energy formalism thermodynamic model. Measured and predicted chemical equilibrium changes in deviation from stoichiometry were compared. Rapid chemical kinetics were observed as the samples equilibrated rapidly for all conditions, indicative that heat and mass transfer were the rate limiting mechanisms. Furthermore, the effects of bulk diffusion (or gas diffusion through the bed or pellet) were examined using pelletized and loose powdered samples and determined to have no discernable impact.

Re-entrance to a ferromagnetic insulator with oxygen-vacancy ordering in the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattice

The charge-density wave is correlated with the properties in transition metal oxides, and regulating this state is important to explore the potential of oxides. Defects could modulate the local environment, in which the effect is subject to the concentration and arrangement, and an artificial arrangement of defect-ordering is highly expected to design the material properties. In this work, the ordering of oxygen vacancies with a preferred location on the (001) La/SrO plane by self-structural optimization was induced in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices with medium oxygen pressure during SrTiO 3 deposition, and then the ferromagnetic charge-ordering (CO)/charge-density-wave (CDW) state was formed in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 with susceptibility to magnetic field, temperature, and superlattice configuration. In addition, re-entrance to the ferromagnetic insulator CO/CDW could be induced by a high magnetic field. The selective occupancy of oxygen vacancies on the (001) La/SrO plane and the phase fluctuation around the CO/CDW-to-ferromagnetic metal phase transition were critical to the above properties. The interfacial diffusion with atomic-level resolution to control oxygen vacancies could be used in other magnetoelectric systems and corresponding device applications.

Dimerization and ring-opening in bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) mediated by [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (R = SiMe 3 )

Here the addition of 2 equiv. of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) to [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (1, R = SiMe 3 ), in Et 2 O, results in formation of [cyclo-N(iPr)C(Me) 2 CH(NiPr 2 )C{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC 3 (NiPr 2 ) 2 }][U(NR 2 ) 2 (N(SiMe 3 )SiMe 2 CH 2 )(CCPh)] (2) in moderate isolated yield. Complex 2 is the result of coupling and protonation of two BAC molecules, where complex 1 contributes the required proton. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and represents a new mode of reactivity of the cyclopropenylidene fragment.

Reaction dynamics of S( 3 P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene: crossed-beam scattering, low-temperature flow experiments, and high-level electronic structure calculations

Sulfur atoms serve as key players in diverse chemical processes, from astrochemistry at very low temperature to combustion at high temperature. Building upon our prior findings, showing cyclization to thiophenes following the reaction of ground-state sulfur atoms with dienes, we here extend this investigation to include many additional reaction products, guided by detailed theoretical predictions. The outcomes highlight the complex formation of products during intersystem crossing (ISC) to the singlet surfaces. Here, we employed crossed-beam velocity map imaging and high-level ab initio methods to explore the reaction of S( 3 P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene under single-collision conditions and in low-temperature flows. For the butadiene reaction, our experimental results show the formation of thiophene via H 2 loss, a 2H-thiophenyl radical through H loss, and thioketene through ethene loss at a slightly higher collision energy compared to previous observations. Complementary Chirped-Pulse Fourier-Transform mmWave spectroscopy (CP-FTmmW) measurements in a uniform flow confirmed the formation of thioketene in the reaction at 20 K. For the isoprene reaction, we observed analogous products along with the 2H-thiophenyl radical arising from methyl loss and C 3 H 4 S (loss of ethene or H 2 + acetylene). CP-FTmmW detected the formation of thioformaldehyde via loss of 1,3-butadiene, again in the 20 K flow. Coupled-cluster calculations on the pathways found by the automated kinetic workflow code KinBot support these findings and indicate ISC to the singlet surface, leading to the generation of various long-lived intermediates, including 5-membered heterocycles.

Effects of intrinsic and atmospherically induced defects in narrow bandgap (FASnI 3 ) x (MAPbI 3 ) 1- x perovskite films and solar cells

Narrow band gap mixed tin (Sn) + lead (Pb) perovskites are vital as the bottom sub-cell absorber in high efficiency all-perovskite polycrystalline tandem solar cells. Here, we report on the impact of mixed cation composition and atmospheric exposure of perovskite films on sub-gap absorption in films and performance of solar cells based on narrow band gap mixed formamidinium (FA) + methylammonium (MA) and Sn+Pb halide perovskites, (FASnI 3 ) x (MAPbI 3 ) 1- x . Structural and optical properties of 0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.8 (FASnI 3 ) x (MAPbI 3 ) 1- x perovskite thin film absorbers with band gaps ranging from 1.25 ( x = 0.6) to 1.34 eV (x = 0.3) are probed with and without atmospheric exposure. Urbach energy, which quantifies the amount of sub-gap absorption, is tracked for pristine perovskite films as a function of composition, with x = 0.6 and 0.3 demonstrating the lowest and highest Urbach energies of 23 and 36 meV, respectively. Films with x = 0.5 and 0.6 compositions show less degradation upon atmospheric exposure than higher or lower Sn-content films having greater sub-gap absorption. The corresponding solar cells based on the x = 0.6 absorber show the highest device performance. Despite having a low Urbach energy, higher Sn-content solar cells show reduced device performances as the amount of degradation via oxidation is the most substantial.

Nanoscale control of LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 metal–insulator transition using ultra-low-voltage electron-beam lithography

In this work, we describe a method to control the insulator–metal transition at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface using ultra-low-voltage electron beam lithography. Compared to previous reports that utilize conductive atomic force microscope (c-AFM) lithography, this approach can provide comparable resolution (~10 nm) at write speeds (10 mm/s) that are up to 10 000× faster than c-AFM. The writing technique is nondestructive, and the conductive state is reversible via prolonged exposure to air. Transport properties of representative devices are measured at milli-Kelvin temperatures, where superconducting behavior is observed. We also demonstrate the ability to create conducting devices on graphene/LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures. The underlying mechanism is believed to be closely related to the same mechanism regulating c-AFM-based methods.

The role of magnetic anisotropy in the magnetoresistance of Cr 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 thin film antiferromagnets

The magnetic states of antiferromagnetic insulating thin films are a promising medium for information storage, but characterization of these states has proven to be challenging. One approach is via magnetotransport measurements in an adjacent heavy metal layer. To this end, we synthesized and characterized a series of Cr 2 O 3 films and bilayers on Al 2 O 3 substrates with three different orientations: m-plane, a-plane, and c-plane. X-ray diffraction results demonstrated orientation control of the Cr 2 O 3 thin film, with m-plane films displaying a higher degree of mosaic spread than the a- and c-plane films. Reciprocal space maps showed that the films are mostly relaxed, although there was a small and different degree of strain in each orientation. The m-plane films were under 2% compressive strain, the a-plane film was under 0.5% compressive strain, and the c-plane film was completely relaxed to bulk values. To probe the magnetic state of the films, we measured the angular dependent magnetoresistance of Cr 2 O 3 /Pt bilayers for each orientation. We found a nontrivial temperature dependence of the sign of the magnetoresistance, pointing to the complex interplay between the exchange and anisotropy energies that vary with orientation. We propose that strain and mosaic spread may contribute to a difference in magnetic anisotropies among the samples and the resulting temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance. This work demonstrates the importance of considering the competition between antiferromagnetic exchange and magnetic anisotropy when storing information in the spin state of an antiferromagnetic insulator.

Crack formation in strained β-(AlxGa 1−x ) 2 O 3 films grown on (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 substrates

The cracking and local strain relaxation in (010) (Al x Ga 1−x ) 2 O 3 films grown on Ga 2 O 3 substrates are assessed in terms of film composition and thickness. We utilize x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques combined with simulation and modeling to investigate that film cracking on curvature (flatness) has a directly proportional relationship with film thickness and/or aluminum content. Cross section transmission electron microscopy reveals that cracks along both the (001) and (100) cleavage planes penetrate into the substrate. The diffuse scattered intensity observed in reciprocal space maps (RSMs) is directly correlated with the tilt that is introduced due to the change in the deformation conditions near the cracks. While asymmetric RSMs show that the layers are fully strained, the diffuse scattering distribution in reciprocal space can be interpreted to show that the cracking relaxes and locally tilts the lattice ∼350 nm from the crack edges, which is consistent with the larger radius of curvature associated with the films with higher crack densities. For example, a 200 nm (Al 0.13 Ga 0.87 ) 2 O 3 thick film has an average inter-crack spacing of 3.3 µm, so most of the epitaxial layer is fully strained except near the cracks where it deforms elastically and is consistent with the gallium oxide Poisson ratio. A reciprocal space model was developed, which imports the strain and tilt distributions (based on finite element modeling) to match the features observed in the experimental maps. We also note that previous studies involving (Al x Ga 1−x ) 2 O 3 films may show evidence of cracking as observed in their symmetric and asymmetric RSMs.

Effect of hydrothermal synthesis conditions on up-conversion luminescence intensity of β-NaYF{sub 4} : Er{sup 3+}, Yb{sup 3+} submicron particles

The differences in the luminescence intensities of up-conversion β-NaYF{sub 4} : Er{sup 3+}, Yb{sup 3+} particles synthesised by the hydrothermal method under various synthesis conditions are studied. The results of the study lead to the conclusion that in order to achieve the maximum luminescence intensity in such particles, it is necessary to use ammonium fluoride and a medium with pH = 3. In this case, the length of the particles increases, up to the formation of rod-shaped particles. Based on the data on the size of the coherent scattering region and on microstresses, we can assume that the particles are polycrystals. At the same time, limiting the size of the coherent scattering region is possible due to the defective structure. When the nanoparticles are synthesised in a medium with pH = 3, hydrolysed regions containing OH groups are formed on the crystallite surface. The presence of these groups does not affect the intensity of up-conversion luminescence of submicron-size particles. (paper)

Anisotropic magnetic and transport properties of orthorhombic o-Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

Abstract The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 (U 2 Co 3 Si 5 -type, Ibam ). Our findings show that o -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges near T sp = 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition near T M = 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity of T sp and T M . The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 is an environment for complex f state magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.

Hidden frustration in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3

We report a study of the magnetic ground state and crystal electric field (CEF) scheme in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3 . Combined neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the Nd 3+ moments occupying the triangular lattice in this material harbor hidden signs of frustration not detected in typical Curie-Weiss-based parametrization of the frustration index (𝑓 = Θ 𝐶⁢𝑊 /𝑇 𝑁 ). This is evidenced by a zero-field splitting of the Kramers' ground state and first excited state doublets at temperatures far in excess of 𝑇 𝑁 as well as signatures of low-energy fluctuations for 𝑇 ≫ 𝑇 𝑁 . As a result, a suppression of the zero-field ordered moment relative to its field saturation value is observed, and the impacts of this magnetic frustration as well as the coexisting bond frustration in the CdP honeycomb network on the physical properties of NdCd 3 ⁢P3 are discussed.

Axion insulator state in ferromagnetically ordered CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructures

Ferromagnetic (FM) axion insulators may greatly simplify experimental explorations of the topological magnetoelectric effect, as the FM ordering can be stable in a broad range of magnetic field. Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that two-dimensional van der Waals FM CrI 3 and MnBi 2 Se 4 overlayers induce opposite-sign exchange fields in the topological surface states of Bi 2 Se 3 film when they are ferromagnetically ordered. As a consequence, the CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructure is a robust FM axion insulator, according to surface-resolved Berry curvature calculations. Our work opens up opportunities for the design of materials with the topological magnetoelectric effect.

Multigap electron-phonon superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional pnictide K 2 Mo 3 As 3

In this work, we show, using density functional calculations, that quasi-one-dimensional K 2 Mo 3 As 3 , which is closely related to K 2 Cr 3 As 3 and has very similar superconducting properties, is not close to magnetism and has conventional s wave electron-phonon superconductivity. This superconductivity is of multigap character due to different coupling on different Fermi surface sheets. This is discussed in relation to the properties of this family of quasi-one-dimensional pnictide superconductors. The results show that this family of superconductors provides a unique opportunity for studying the interplay of spin fluctuations and electron-phonon superconductivity in transition metal pnictides, and offer a path for sorting out the different proposed superconducting scenarios in this fascinating family of pnictide superconductors.

Neutron scattering study of the kagome metal Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5

Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 is a rare example of a correlated metal in which the Mn moments form a kagome lattice. The absence of magnetic ordering to the lowest temperatures suggests that geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions may lead to strong magnetic fluctuations. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 , finding that phonon scattering dominates for energies from ~20–50 meV. These results are in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersions and densities of states, and as well reproduce the measured specific heat. A weak magnetic signal was detected at energies less than ~10 meV, present only at the lowest temperatures. The magnetic signal is broad and quasielastic, as expected for metallic paramagnets.

Van der Waals heterostructure Pt 2 HgSe 3 / CrI 3 for topological valleytronics

We identify a valley-polarized Chern insulator in a van der Waals heterostructure, monolayer Pt 2 HgSe 3 /monolayer CrI 3 , for potential applications with interplay between electric, magnetic, optical, and mechanical effects. The interlayer proximity magnetic coupling nearly closes the band gap of monolayer Pt 2 HgSe 3 , and the strong intralayer spin-orbit coupling further lifts the valley degeneracy by over 100 meV, leading to positive and negative band gaps at opposite valleys. In the valley with negative gap, the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling opens a topological band gap of 17.8 meV, which is enlarged to 30.8 meV by adding a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layer. We find large orbital magnetization in the Pt 2 HgSe 3 layer that is much larger than spin, which can induce a measurable optical Kerr effect. Additionally, the valley polarization and Chern number are coupled to the magnetic order of the nearest-neighbor CrI3 layer, which is switchable by electric, magnetic, and mechanical means in experiments. The presence of h-BN protects the topological phase, allowing the construction of superlattices with valley, spin, and layer degrees of freedom.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in high-mobility SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures

In this report an extremely large linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is a ubiquitous phenomenon emerging from topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals. However, the connection between an LMR and a nontrivial topology is under extensive debate. In this paper, by precisely controlling the thickness of SrNbO 3 thin films grown on SrTiO 3 substrates, we observe an LMR over a large carrier density range with a magnetoresistance as high as 150000% at a carrier density n~10 21 cm -3 , far away from the quantum-limit regime. The temperature-, magnetic-field-, and carrier-density-dependent LMR in SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures provides compelling evidence of a mobility-driven LMR in coherent electronic systems. Our results uncover the general principle of an LMR and shed light on proper categorization of transport properties in topological and correlated materials.
