Investigation of Nanoparticle Degradation in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems through Automated Electron Microscopy

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are promising devices for the deployment of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles, providing a higher efficiency for similar driving range and fueling time than the existing ones. However, PEMFCs still encounter durability challenges mainly due to catalyst degradation in the cathode. Mitigating these performance losses requires a better understanding of the degradation mechanisms under heavy-duty accelerated stress tests (ASTs) [1]. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) are key tools for the analysis of Pt and PtCo nanoparticle size, spatial distribution and composition [2]. Electron tomography is also used to determine the rate and type of degradation of catalyst nanoparticles as a function of their position on the carbon support. In this work, automated data acquisition software, paired with a custom Python code, have been used to study the effect of different accelerated stress tests (ASTs) on nanoparticle coarsening [2]. Figure 1 shows high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF)-STEM images and EDS maps comparing the cathodes of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) following an electrocatalyst AST performed under H2/N2 with that of the heavy-duty AST performed under H2/air. We will discuss how AST conditions affect considerably the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles across the electrode between the membrane and microporous layer. Although the median particle size increased more in the MEA aged under the heavy-duty AST, as determined using a high-throughput image analysis, the quantitative EDS measurements demonstrate that the electrocatalyst AST resulted in more Pt and Co dissolution from the cathode, which is another important indicator of electrocatalyst degradation. We will further present the impact of the relative humidity (% RH) on the degradation mechanisms demonstrated using the same approach. Electron tomography has been used to distinguish the Pt nanoparticles residing on the carbon support surface (exterior) from those within the pore structure (interior) in order to determine the relative stability of interior and exterior nanoparticles. As shown in Figure 2, we will compare the Pt catalyst particle size at the beginning of test (BOT) and end of test (EOT), and discuss the importance of automating the electron tomography workflow, i.e. acquisition, reconstruction, and visualization, to increase sampling and determine the standard deviation of these measurement. The outlook for utilizing low-dose cryo-tomography for limiting damage to the catalyst, support, and especially proton-conducting ionomer will also be discussed [3].

Statistical characterization of twin transmission across grain boundaries in magnesium

Here, a detailed statistical analysis of twin transmission (TT) across grain boundaries is performed in rolled, commercial purity magnesium compressed along the rolling direction. EBSD images are acquired from two different cuts: a section containing the rolling (RD) and normal (ND) directions; and a section at 35° to the ND which contains transverse direction (TD). An automated twinning analysis software, METIS, is used to obtain the statistical correlations between deformation twins and other microstructural features by analyzing EBSD microstructures comprising thousands of grains and twins. This detailed statistical analysis reveals that the TT propensity is sensitive to the grain boundary (GB) misorientation angle but not to the GB misorientation axis. Specifically, TT propensity decreases with increasing GB misorientation angle; however, the decreasing trend is not monotonic. Further, the detailed analysis of TT events combining macroscopic Schmid factor and the geometric measures (m’: accounts for the alignment of both twin plane normal and shear directions; m”: accounts for the alignment of only twin shear directions; and m”’: accounts for the alignment of only twin plane normal) helps in understanding and identifying the process of twin-pair formation, i.e., co-nucleation versus transmission, also to identify the role of local stresses at GBs induced by inter-grain interaction versus twinning shear transformation processes. In addition, Bayesian inference is used to draw statistically meaningful conclusions as to the likelihood of transmission given misorientation angles. Lastly, twin chain frequency as a function of chain length is predicted using the probability distribution obtained from the Bayesian inference and compared with the actual data from the EBSD microstructures.

The System for Classification of Low-Pressure Systems (SyCLoPS): An All-In-One Objective Framework for Large-Scale Data Sets

We propose the first unified objective framework (SyCLoPS) for detecting and classifying all types of low-pressure systems (LPSs) in a given data set. We use the state-of-the-art automated feature tracking software TempestExtremes (TE) to detect and track LPS features globally in ERA5 and compute 16 parameters from commonly found atmospheric variables for classification. A Python classifier is implemented to classify all LPSs at once. The framework assigns 16 different labels (classes) to each LPS data point and designates four different types of high-impact LPS tracks, including tracks of tropical cyclone (TC), monsoonal system, subtropical storm and polar low. The classification process involves disentangling high-altitude and drier LPSs, differentiating tropical and non-tropical LPSs using novel criteria, and optimizing for the detection of the four types of high-impact LPS. A comparison of our labels with those in the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) revealed an overall accuracy of 95% in distinguishing between tropical systems, extratropical cyclones, and disturbances. SyCLoPS produces a better TC detection skill compared to the previous algorithms, highlighted by an approximately 6% reduction in the false alarm rate compared to the previous TE algorithm. The vertical cross section composite of the four types of high-impact LPS we detect each shows distinct structural characteristics. Finally, we demonstrate that SyCLoPS is valuable for investigating various aspects of LPSs in climate data, such as the evolution of a single LPS track, patterns of LPS frequencies, and precipitation or wind influence associated with a particular LPS class.

Level set topology optimization in Firedrake

Lestofire is an academic software for the automated design of engineering components. It finds the optimal geometry of a system to minimize a given cost function while constrained by a given set of physics equations. Using a level set function to describe the geometry, lestofire uses shapes derivative to evolve the system until its optimal shape. It leverages the compilation of variational forms in Firedrake (https://www.firedrakeproject.org/) and the automated calculation of shape derivatives via pyadjoint (http://www.dolfin-adjoint.or/en/latest/) to allow fast prototyping of different physics, cost functions and design parametrizations.

pvlib python: 2023 project update

pvlib python is a community-developed, open-source software toolbox for simulating the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy components and systems. It provides reference implementations of over 100 empirical and physics-based models from the peer-reviewed scientific literature, including solar position algorithms, irradiance models, thermal models, and PV electrical models. In addition to individual low-level model implementations, pvlib python provides high-level workflows that chain these models together like building blocks to form complete “weather-to-power” photovoltaic system models. It also provides functions to fetch and import a wide variety of weather datasets useful for PV modeling. pvlib python has been developed since 2013 and follows modern best practices for open-source python software, with comprehensive automated testing, standards-based packaging, and semantic versioning. Its source code is developed openly on GitHub and releases are distributed via the Python Package Index (PyPI) and the conda-forge repository. pvlib python’s source code is made freely available under the permissive BSD-3 license. Here we (the project’s core developers) present an update on pvlib python, describing capability and community development since our 2018 publication (Holmgren, Hansen, & Mikofski, 2018).

Novel PV Array System Design to Accelerate Solar Deployment, Reduce LCOE, Reduce Land Use Competition, and Increase Siting Flexibility

The increasing demand for solar energy faces significant barriers, including inefficient construction processes, high project costs limiting LCOE reductions, and diminishing availability of "good" sites with favorable interconnection. Conventional solar installations are often constrained by long construction timelines and the need for flat, large plots. Furthermore, the industry struggles with a shortage of skilled labor. Planted Solar aims to address these challenges by fundamentally transforming solar deployment from a construction project into a streamlined manufacturing process. Our novel approach combines high-density racking, integrated terrain-following design software, and installation automation. Unlike competing solutions that either assist with standard array assembly or offer dense packing without terrain adaptability or automation, Planted's technology uniquely brings together a new array product with in-place automated manufacturing to achieve the lowest possible cost, greater site flexibility, and accelerated deployment.

Evaluating User Errors and Temporal Trends in Marine Fish Communities Using 360-Degree Underwater Photography

The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling has been proposed as a complementary method to monitor fish species in marine environments, offering a non-invasive and potentially more efficient approach to marine species observations. eDNA monitoring could be especially useful in and around sites targeted for marine energy generation as these regions need regular monitoring that would be impractical with traditional techniques. Before we can fully rely upon eDNA, we must first verify its accuracy against other proven methods, such as the use of underwater photography. In this study, I deployed a 360-degree camera in the tidal channel of Sequim Bay once a month during several hours overlapping slack tide. I investigated how having multiple people identify and count fish on underwater images could affect the overall results. Using chi square tests in R, I compared my fish identifications and counts to those made by another intern on the same images recorded in August. I found significant differences in the number of species identified and the total individual counts between the two different datasets. I also tested the statistical differences in both Shannon diversity and Pielou evenness indices between the August, September, and November camera deployments using a Hutcheson t-test. Only one significant difference was found in the Shannon index comparisons, and none were found between the Pielou evenness comparisons. These findings show that if multiple identifiers are used to process underwater images, quality control checks must be made to reduce the potential for error. This also points toward the possibility to leverage more advanced image analysis processes, such as automated image analysis software. The findings from this study also show that the dynamics of marine fish communities can vary over a few months; however, further analysis is needed to determine the extent of the seasonal changes in Sequim Bay.

The CMIP6 Data Request (DREQ, version 01.00.31)

The data request of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) defines all the quantities from CMIP6 simulations that should be archived. This includes both quantities of general interest needed from most of the CMIP6-endorsed model intercomparison projects (MIPs) and quantities that are more specialized and only of interest to a single endorsed MIP.The complexity of the data request has increased from the early days of model intercomparisons, as has the data volume. In contrast with CMIP5, CMIP6 requires distinct sets of highly tailored variables to be saved from each of the more than 200 experiments. This places new demands on the data request information base and leads to a new requirement for development of software that facilitates automated interrogation of the request and retrieval of its technical specifications. The building blocks and structure of the CMIP6 Data Request (DREQ), which have been constructed to meet these challenges, are described in this paper.

Computer transformation of partial differential equations into any coordinate system

The use of tensors to provide a compact way of writing partial differential equations in a form valid in all coordinate systems is discussed. In order to find solutions to the equations with their boundary conditions they must be expressed in terms of the coordinate system under consideration. The process of arriving at these expressions from the tensor formulation was automated by a software system, TENSR. An allied system that analyzes the resulting expressions term by term and drops those that are negligible is also described.

Novel measurement techniques (development and analysis of silicon solar cells near 20% effciency)

Work in identifying, developing, and analyzing techniques for measuring bulk recombination rates, and surface recombination velocities and rates in all regions of high-efficiency silicon solar cells is presented. The accuracy of the previously developed DC measurement system was improved by adding blocked interference filters. The system was further automated by writing software that completely samples the unkown solar cell regions with data of numerous recombination velocity and lifetime pairs. The results can be displayed in three dimensions and the best fit can be found numerically using the simplex minimization algorithm. Also described is a theoretical methodology to analyze and compare existing dynamic measurement techniques.

The CCD/Transit Instrument (CTI) data-analysis system

An account is given of the Kitt Peak CCD/Transit Instrument's software for the automated archiving, analysis, and interrogation of each observation night's nearly 450 Mbytes of image data. The analysis phase is performed by a pair of linked algorithms, one of which operates on the absolute pixel-values and the other on the spatial derivative of the data, so that both isolated and merged images are reliably detected in a single pass. This is in due course followed by the automatic comparison of each new detection with a set of predefined templates in parameter space, in order to find such interesting objects as supernovae, quasars, and variable stars.

Benchmarking and performance analysis of the CM-2

A suite of benchmarking routines testing communication, basic arithmetic operations, and selected kernel algorithms written in LISP and PARIS was developed for the CM-2. Experiment runs are automated via a software framework that sequences individual tests, allowing for unattended overnight operation. Multiple measurements are made and treated statistically to generate well-characterized results from the noisy values given by cm:time. The results obtained provide a comparison with similar, but less extensive, testing done on a CM-1. Tests were chosen to aid the algorithmist in constructing fast, efficient, and correct code on the CM-2, as well as gain insight into what performance criteria are needed when evaluating parallel processing machines.

An expert system for simulating electric loads aboard Space Station Freedom

Space Station Freedom will provide an infrastructure for space experimentation. This environment will feature regulated access to any resources required by an experiment. Automated systems are being developed to manage the electric power so that researchers can have the flexibility to modify their experiment plan for contingencies or for new opportunities. To define these flexible power management characteristics for Space Station Freedom, a simulation is required that captures the dynamic nature of space experimentation; namely, an investigator is allowed to restructure his experiment and to modify its execution. This changes the energy demands for the investigator's range of options. An expert system competent in the domain of cryogenic fluid management experimentation was developed. It will be used to help design and test automated power scheduling software for Freedom's electric power system. The expert system allows experiment planning and experiment simulation. The former evaluates experimental alternatives and offers advice on the details of the experiment's design. The latter provides a real-time simulation of the experiment replete with appropriate resource consumption.
