Code for the manuscript "Lagrangian Attention Tensor Networks for Velocity Gradient Statistical Mode

We disclose a python/pytorch implementation of the physics-informed machine learning algorithm described in "Lagrangian Attention Tensor Networks for Velocity Gradient Statistical Modeling", LA-UR-24-30678. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of ubiquitous turbulence phenomena is computationally infeasible for realistic flows. As a result, reduced modeling for turbulent flows aim to reduce the number of resolved scales while retaining accurate representations of the small-scale physics. The dynamics of the velocity gradient tensor (VGT) is a key ingredient in reduced or subgrid turbulence models. The evolution equation for the VGT involves nonlocal terms, requiring closure modeling. This implementation of the novel methodology of Lagrangian Attention Tensor Networks (LATN), utilizes a structured representation of the history of the VGT to inform a physics-informed machine learning algorithm. This addition of structured memory terms is shown to outperform previous models when trained and evaluated on DNS data.

Data and Code for 'GHG Mitigation and Land Use Change Implications of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the United States'

BEPAM, Biofuel and Environmental Policy Analysis Model, models the agricultural sector and determines economically optimal land-use and feedstock mix at the US scale by maximizing the sum of agricultural sector consumers’ and producers’ surplus subject to various resource balances, land availability, and technological constraints under a range of biomass prices, from zero to $140 Mg-1 over the 2016-2030 period. Here BEPAM is used to model SAF production using energy crops and crop residues. BEPAM uses the GAMS format and uses yield and GHG balance projections from the biogeochemical model, DayCent.

AdditiveFOAM: A Continuum Multiphysics Code for Additive Manufacturing

AdditiveFOAM is a computational framework that simulates transport phenomena in Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. It is built on OpenFOAM (Weller et al., 1998), the leading free, open-source software package for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). OpenFOAM offers an extensible platform for solving complex multiphysics problems using state-of-the-art finite volume methods. AdditiveFOAM leverages these capabilities to develop specialized tools aimed at addressing challenges in AM processing. Metal additive manufacturing, also known as metal 3D printing, is an advanced manufacturing technique that creates physical parts from a three-dimensional (3D) digital model by melting metal powder or wire feedstock. A significant area of research in metal AM focuses on process planning to mitigate anomalous features during printing that are deleterious to part performance (e.g., porosity and cracking), as well as controlling localized microstructure and material properties. Given the high costs and substantial time requirements associated with experimental methods for qualifying new materials and processes, there is a compelling incentive for researchers to utilize advanced computational simulations. In this context, AdditiveFOAM offers a simulation framework to better understand undesirable features in printing, thereby enhancing process planning and reducing the reliance on labor-intensive experimental campaigns.

PyDislocDyn: A Python code for calculating dislocation drag and other crystal properties

PyDislocDyn is a suite of python programs designed to perform various calculations for dislocation dynamics in the continuum limit. In particular, one of its main purposes is to calculate dislocation drag from phonon wind. Additional features include the averaging of elastic constants for polycrystals, the calculation of the dislocation field including its limiting velocities, and the calculation of dislocation self-energy and line tension.

GEANT4 code for DANCE with NEUANCE detector-response simulations

A new GEANT4 model for DANCE with NEUANCE has been developed to account for the change in the DANCE configuration when NEUANCE is installed. In this model, the energy resolution and the shape of the threshold of the individual DANCE detectors are used as an input to provide realistic representation of the measured γ-ray spectra. In addition, the distance from each detector to the target is defined in an input file as well as the physical presence of the a detector in the DANCE and NEUANCE arrays. The azimuthal angle of NEUANCE is also an external parameter to be tuned to represent the measurement. Simulated spectra are compared with measurements with standard γ-ray calibrated sources.

STAT7 v1.2 User Guide: The STAT7 Code for Statistical Propagation of Uncertainties in Steady-State Thermal Hydraulics Analysis of Plate-Fueled Reactors

The STAT7 software was developed to perform steady-state, single-phase thermal hydraulics analysis of plate-fueled reactors based on statistical propagation of uncertainties. Application of the software is for non-power research and test reactors, including conversion to low-enriched uranium fuel of U.S. High-Performance Research Reactors such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor. Since it can be necessary to repeat analysis during fuel reloading, STAT7 accommodates flexibility in analyzing many realistic aspects of reactor fuel management. STAT7 uses a Monte Carlo approach to model uncertainty in common fuel fabrication parameters and other key reactor operating parameters required for thermal hydraulics analyses of research and test reactors. These safety calculations are ultimately intended to protect against high fuel plate temperatures due to critical heat flux, or onset of flow instability. STAT7 supports water properties based on the IAPWS-IF97 functions (The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam Industrial Formulation 1997 for the Thermodynamic Properties of Water and Steam) in addition to the fit functions. STAT7 predicts axial profiles of fuel, cladding, and coolant temperature along a lateral stripe that runs the full length of the fuel plate from the bottom to the top. STAT7 can simultaneously analyze all of the axial nodes of all of the fuel plates and all of the coolant channels for one latera stripe of a fuel element. Power splits are calculated for each axial node of each plate to determine how much of the power goes out each face of the plate. By running STAT7 multiple times, full core analysis can be performed by analyzing the margin to onset of nucleate boiling and onset of flow instability for each axial node of each stripe of each plate of each fuel element in the core.

Optimization of the artificial viscosity in Lagrangian staggered discretization codes. Modeling 1D stand-alone shock - case study

We have developed new measures of errors for numerical shock. The new approach is based on analysis of the structure function, and separation of the errors related to oscillations and shock width, which also include error in the position of the ”center” of the numerical shock. We have demonstrated that those measures correctly characterize the numerical solution. We introduced an objective function in, which both types of errors are weighted, and presented optimal values of the coefficients of the linear and quadratic viscosity for different weights and different Mach numbers.
