Robot-Arm Dynamic Control by Computer

Feedforward and feedback schemes linearize responses to control inputs. Method for control of robot arm based on computed nonlinear feedback and state tranformations to linearize system and decouple robot end-effector motions along each of cartesian axes augmented with optimal scheme for correction of errors in workspace. Major new feature of control method is: optimal error-correction loop directly operates on task level and not on joint-servocontrol level.

Learning control for slewing of a flexible panel

This paper studies the applicability of a discrete-time learning control method to the slewing control of a large flexible panel. Among the issues discussed are feasibility of the desired trajectories and their specification schemes, learning control by linear feedback, limitation of the actuator device output, and robustness to parameter changes or modeling errors associated with the chosen learning control design. To demonstrate the effectiveness of learning control, the system is designed with a proportional controller of the base angle only. Then application of the learning control is shown to make the system learn quickly to achieve the desired slewing without residual vibration at the end of the maneuver. Simulation results are reported and discussed.

Initial experiments in thrusterless locomotion control of a free-flying robot

A two-arm free-flying robot has been constructed to study thrusterless locomotion in space. This is accomplished by pushing off or landing on a large structure in a coordinated two-arm maneuver. A new control method, called system momentum control, allows the robot to follow desired momentum trajectories and thus leap or crawl from one structure to another. The robot floats on an air-cushion, simulating in two dimensions the drag-free zero-g environment of space. The control paradigm has been verified experimentally by commanding the robot to push off a bar with both arms, rotate 180 degrees, and catch itself on another bar.

Blading System and Method For Controlling Structural Vibrations

A new blading system for controlling the structural vibrations in axial-flow compressors, turbines, or fans, as in aircraft engines and like turbomachines including a stator disc and a rotor disc is presented. The rotor disc defines several radial hubs that retain the rotor blading systems. Each blading system includes a blade formed of an airfoil, and a root attachment which is dimensioned to fit within, and to engage a corresponding hub. Viscoelastic dampers are selectively applied to the outer surfaces of the root attachment on which compressive or shear forces are likely to develop, intermediate the root attachment and the hub, for compression therebetween upon rotation of the rotor disc, in order to dampen structural vibrations. One advantage presented by the viscoelastic dampers lies in its simplicity, efficiency, cost effectiveness, and its ability to be retrofitted into existing turbomachines with minor surface treatment of the root attachments. Furthermore, since the dampers are not exposed to the inflowing airstream, they do not affect the aerodynamic performance of the turbomachine. Another feature of the damping system is that it provides a significant source of damping to minimize destructive structural vibrations, thereby increasing the durability of the turbomachine, and reducing acoustic noise accompanying high amplitude vibrations.

Sensing and Active Flow Control for Advanced BWB Propulsion-Airframe Integration Concepts

In order to realize the substantial performance benefits of serpentine boundary layer ingesting diffusers, this study investigated the use of enabling flow control methods to reduce engine-face flow distortion. Computational methods and novel flow control modeling techniques were utilized that allowed for rapid, accurate analysis of flow control geometries. Results were validated experimentally using the Techsburg Ejector-based wind tunnel facility; this facility is capable of simulating the high-altitude, high subsonic Mach number conditions representative of BWB cruise conditions.

Framework and Method for Controlling a Robotic System Using a Distributed Computer Network

A robotic system for performing an autonomous task includes a humanoid robot having a plurality of compliant robotic joints, actuators, and other integrated system devices that are controllable in response to control data from various control points, and having sensors for measuring feedback data at the control points. The system includes a multi-level distributed control framework (DCF) for controlling the integrated system components over multiple high-speed communication networks. The DCF has a plurality of first controllers each embedded in a respective one of the integrated system components, e.g., the robotic joints, a second controller coordinating the components via the first controllers, and a third controller for transmitting a signal commanding performance of the autonomous task to the second controller. The DCF virtually centralizes all of the control data and the feedback data in a single location to facilitate control of the robot across the multiple communication networks.

Flow Diode and Method for Controlling Fluid Flow Origin of the Invention

A flow diode configured to permit fluid flow in a first direction while preventing fluid flow in a second direction opposite the first direction is disclosed. The flow diode prevents fluid flow without use of mechanical closures or moving parts. The flow diode utilizes a bypass flowline whereby all fluid flow in the second direction moves into the bypass flowline having a plurality of tortuous portions providing high fluidic resistance. The portions decrease in diameter such that debris in the fluid is trapped. As fluid only travels in one direction through the portions, the debris remains trapped in the portions.

Analogy Between the Collatz Conjecture and Sliding Mode Control

The Collatz Conjecture is a famous mathematics problem that is simple to state and understand but remains unsolved. In this paper, the problem is recast as a discrete-time nonlinear system. and viewed in a new light from the perspective of nonlinear systems and feedback control theory. In particular, connections are made between the Collatz sequence of numbers and the behavior of closed-loop dynamical systems designed using a feedback control method called sliding mode control. Trajectories of such systems are characterized by a reaching phase and a sliding phase, the latter of which exhibits exponential convergence. As sliding mode control design is rooted in Lyapunov stability theory, the analogy suggests a new direction for proving or disproving the Collatz Conjecture. Although several possible approaches are discussed, no formal proof is given in this paper.

System and method for controlling ammonia levels in a selective catalytic reduction catalyst using a nitrogen oxide sensor

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes an air/fuel ratio determination module and an emission level determination module. The air/fuel ratio determination module determines an air/fuel ratio based on input from an air/fuel ratio sensor positioned downstream from a three-way catalyst that is positioned upstream from a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. The emission level determination module selects one of a predetermined value and an input based on the air/fuel ratio. The input is received from a nitrogen oxide sensor positioned downstream from the three-way catalyst. The emission level determination module determines an ammonia level based on the one of the predetermined value and the input received from the nitrogen oxide sensor.
