Optical data processing and projected applications of the ERTS-1 imagery covering the 1973 Mississippi River Valley floods

Flooding was detected along the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries by the multispectral scanner (MSS) on the ERTS-1 on at least three orbits during the spring of 1973. The ERTS data provided the first opportunity for mapping the regional extent of flooding. Special optical data processing techniques were used to produce a variety of multispectral color composites enhancing flood-plain details. One of these, a 2-color composite of near infrared bands 6 and 7, was enlarged and registered to 1:250,000-scale topographic maps and used as the basis for preparation of flood image maps. Two specifically filtered 3-color composites of MSS bands 5,6, and 7 and 4, 5, and 7 were prepared.

Landsat thematic mapper attitude data processing

The Landsat 4 and 5 satellites carry a new, high resolution, seven band thematic mapper imaging instrument. The spacecraft also carry two types of attitude sensors: a gyroscopic internal reference unit (IRU) which senses angular rate from dc to about 2 Hz, and an AC-coupled angular displacement sensor (ADS) measuring angular deviation above 2 Hz. A description of the derivation of the crossover network used to combine and equalize the IRU and ADS data is made. Also described are the digital data processing algorithms which produce the time history of the satellites' attitude motion including the finite impulse response (FIR) implementation of G and F filters; the resampling (interpolation/decimation) and synchronization of the IRU and ADS data; and the axis rotations required as a result of the on-board sensor locations on three orthogonal axes.

Transient excitation and data processing techniques employing the fast fourier transform for aeroelastic testing

The development of testing techniques useful in airplane ground resonance testing, wind tunnel aeroelastic model testing, and airplane flight flutter testing is presented. Included is the consideration of impulsive excitation, steady-state sinusoidal excitation, and random and pseudorandom excitation. Reasons for the selection of fast sine sweeps for transient excitation are given. The use of the fast fourier transform dynamic analyzer (HP-5451B) is presented, together with a curve fitting data process in the Laplace domain to experimentally evaluate values of generalized mass, model frequencies, dampings, and mode shapes. The effects of poor signal to noise ratios due to turbulence creating data variance are discussed. Data manipulation techniques used to overcome variance problems are also included. The experience is described that was gained by using these techniques since the early stages of the SST program. Data measured during 747 flight flutter tests, and SST, YC-14, and 727 empennage flutter model tests are included.

Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). A description of the sensor, ground data processing facility, laboratory calibration, and first results

The papers in this document were presented at the Imaging Spectroscopy 2 Conference of the 31st International Symposium on Optical and Optoelectronic Applied Science and Engineering, in San Diego, California, on 20 and 21 August 1987. They describe the design and performance of the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) sensor and its subsystems, the ground data processing facility, laboratory calibration, and first results.

Damage Detection in Composite Structures with Wavenumber Array Data Processing

Guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) have the potential to be an efficient and cost-effective method for rapid damage detection and quantification of large structures. Attractive features include sensitivity to a variety of damage types and the capability of traveling relatively long distances. They have proven to be an efficient approach for crack detection and localization in isotropic materials. However, techniques must be pushed beyond isotropic materials in order to be valid for composite aircraft components. This paper presents our study on GUW propagation and interaction with delamination damage in composite structures using wavenumber array data processing, together with advanced wave propagation simulations. Parallel elastodynamic finite integration technique (EFIT) is used for the example simulations. Multi-dimensional Fourier transform is used to convert time-space wavefield data into frequency-wavenumber domain. Wave propagation in the wavenumber-frequency domain shows clear distinction among the guided wave modes that are present. This allows for extracting a guided wave mode through filtering and reconstruction techniques. Presence of delamination causes spectral change accordingly. Results from 3D CFRP guided wave simulations with delamination damage in flat-plate specimens are used for wave interaction with structural defect study.

Preparation of the Multi-Site Data Processing at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera is scheduled to start taking data in the summer of 2025. The Data Release Production will run the LSST Science Pipe software at data facilities in the US, France and the UK. The LSST Science Pipeline consists of complex directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) of tasks. Rubin will use the Production and Distributed Analysis (PanDA) workflow and workload management system to orchestrate this complex workflow and the distribution of workloads to the data facilities. When run end-to-end by a team of data production staff, this processing (the Science Pipelines, distributed by the workflow and workload management system) is referred to as a 'campaign'. This paper describes the central services and data facility specific services that support this multi-site data process model, including the service deployment infrastructure, the workload and workflow system, the Campaign Management tools, and connection to Rubin Data Management. This paper will also mention the experience of processing the Rubin Commissioning Camera data. All these are part of the effort to scale up the processing capabilities for the expected very large data volume from the LSST Camera.

S-192 analysis: Conventional and special data processing techniques

The author has identified the following significant results. Multispectral scanner data gathered over test sites in southeast Michigan were analyzed. This analysis showed the data to be somewhat deficient especially in terms of the limited signal range in most SDOs and also in regard to SDO-SDO misregistration. Further analysis showed that the scan line straightening algorithm increased the misregistration of the data. Data were processed using the conic format. The effects of such misregistration on classification accuracy was analyzed via simulation and found to be significant. Results of employing conventional as well as special, unresolved object, processing techniques were disappointing due, at least in part, to the limited signal range and noise content of the data. Application of a second class of special processing techniques, signature extension techniques, yielded better results. Two of the more basic signature extension techniques seemed to be useful in spite of the difficulties.

Data Processing and Analysis of Performance Measurements From Ingenuity Rotors in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory 25-Ft Space Simulator

The success of Ingenuity completing over 71 flights on Mars has resulted in the possible use of two further optimized Ingenuity-sized helicopters to retrieve samples for the planned Mars Sample Return campaign. Data to validate performance for several rotor speeds, densities, configurations, and collectives will aid in the design process and help in understanding Ingenuity’s current performance limitations. Tests were performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the 25-foot Space Simulator, which include the Engineering Design Model 1 (EDM-1) with and without a cruciform box, and the Transonic Rotor Test (TRT) which is a single rotor setup featuring the same blade geometry as EDM-1 but designed to spin at much higher RPMs. The experimental setup, test matrix, data processing, data quality, and the performance results for EDM1 and TRT campaigns are presented.

An investigation of errors and data processing techniques for an RF multilateration system

The development of an RF Multilateration system to provide accurate position and velocity measurements during the approach and landing phase of Vertical Takeoff Aircraft operation is discussed. The system uses an angle-modulated ranging signal to provide both range and range rate measurements between an aircraft transponder and multiple ground stations. Range and range rate measurements are converted to coordinate measurements and the coordinate and coordinate rate information is transmitted by an integral data link to the aircraft. Data processing techniques are analyzed to show advantages and disadvantages. Error analyses are provided to permit a comparison of the various techniques.

NIMBUS-5 sounder data processing system. Part 2: Results

The Nimbus-5 spacecraft carries infrared and microwave radiometers for sensing the temperature distribution of the atmosphere. Methods developed for obtaining temperature profiles from the combined set of infrared and microwave radiation measurements are described. Algorithms used to determine (a) vertical temperature and water vapor profiles, (b) cloud height, fractional coverage, and liquid water content, (c) surface temperature, and (d) total outgoing longwave radiation flux are described. Various meteorological results obtained from the application of the Nimbus-5 sounding data processing system during 1973 and 1974 are presented.

A Model-Based Study of On-Board Data Processing Architecture for Balloon-Borne Aurora Observation

This paper discusses an application of ISAAC design methodology to a balloon-borne payload electronic system for aurora observation. The methodology is composed of two phases, high level design and low level implementation, the focus of this paper is on the high level design. This paper puts the system architecture in the context of a balloon based application but it can be generalized to any airborne/space-borne application. The system architecture includes a front-end detector, its corresponding data processing unit, and a controller. VisualSim has been used to perform modeling and simulations to explore the entire design space, finding optimal solutions that meet system requirements.

Digital data processing of ERTS-1 imagery of Delaware Bay

A user-oriented Earth Resources Data Center is in operation at Bendix Aerospace, which a capable of automatically producing classification imagery and thematic maps from ERTS computer compatible tapes. The ERDC is now being used to process ERTS-1 data under a subcontract from the University of Delaware. ERTS coverage of Delaware Bay has been processed to produce classification imagery of water masses in the bay, and a map of all land-water boundaries along the shoreline including wetlands and inland lakes. Imagery, the user's video monitor color display, the data processing facility, and methodology are described.

Optical-data-processing properties of a liquid-crystal television spatial light modulator

The potential of an extremely inexpensive liquid-crystal television (LCTV) as a two-dimensional spatial light modulator has been investigated. The LCTV modulates the transmission of coherent or incoherent light and can either be electronically addressed through a microcomputer or optically addressed with a TV camera. The transmission characteristics of the device have been measured, its diffraction pattern is examined, and its use as an input device for an optical correlator is tested. It is discovered that, with proper modifications, it has potential for optical-data-processing applications.

Machine-Protection System for the PIP-II Linear Accelerator: Architecture and Data Processing Schemes

PIP-II at Fermilab features a brand-new, 800 MeV leading-edge Linear Accelerator (Linac) that will enable the Fermilab complex to deliver more than a megawatt of beam power to the Long Base-line Neutrino Facility (LBNF), requiring a robust Machine Protection System (MPS) to prevent beam-induced damage to delicate cryomodules and vacuum components. Signals in various accelerator components, in both analog and digital format, are collected and processed to assest the operating conditions of the accelerator. In the situation a potential damage is foreseen, the beam permit signal will be drop. A critical element of this system is the fast Analog Machine Protection System, a high-bandwidth platform designed for real-time beam loss monitoring. The system utilizes a modular, FPGA-based architecture to digitize signals from beam-sensing devices, such as AC Current Transformers (ACCTs), non-invasive Ring Pickups (RPUs) and beam scrapers. To eliminate both high frequency as well as 60 Hz noise that might be picked up in the industrial environment, data processing schemes beyond regular digital filtering are planned and implemented.

Advanced technology for earth observation - Data processing

The Experimental Land Observing System (ELOS) is to demonstrate major advances in space-based land observation. Program success will depend upon successful demonstration of both space-segment performance and ground-system capabilities. Increases in data-rate, volume, and processing requirements present substantial challenges to the ground data processing system. ELOS is based on the utilization of the multispectral linear array (MLA) sensor, a solid-state, electronically scanned instrument. Current MLA instrument designs offer a number of capabilities beyond those provided in the Landsat imaging devices. These capabilities include greater resolution, inherent registration, onboard calibration, off-nadir pointing capability, and fore/aft pointing capability. The proposed MLA flight mission scenario will be one of continued growth and will include flights on the Space Transportation System. Attention is also given to ground-to-ground data transport, data capture, and the use of high speed computers.

The 1971 corn blight watch experiment data processing, analysis, and interpretation

The principle data acquisition centers are listed for the corn blight experiment. A data storage and retrieval system was established. The purpose of the system was to: (1) store data in organized library; (2) maintain a record of all data stored and reduced for future access; (3) report the data in simplest form to users; and (4) record data reduction results from photographic and multispectral scanner sensors. The procedures designed for handling the large amounts of data are also reviewed.
