High-Q Superconducting Lumped-Element Resonators for Low-Mass Axion Searches

Low-frequency superconducting lumped-element resonators have recently attracted significant attention in the context of axion dark matter searches. Here we present the design and implementation of a fixed-frequency superconducting resonator operating near $250~\mathrm{kHz}$, possessing an inductor volume of $\sim 1$ liter and achieving an unloaded quality factor $Q \approx 2.1\times10^{6}$. This resonator represents a significant improvement over the state of the art and informs the design of searches for low-mass axions.

Atomic structures for studying elemental segregation at garnet grain boundaries

This is a dataset containing atomic structures of bulk and grain boundaries of doped/undoped Li7La3Zr2O12 solid electrolytes, which were obtained from atomic simulations in a journal paper "Elemental Segregation at Garnet Grain Boundaries: Eliminating Its Detrimental Role in Conductivity and Lithium Nucleation" by Kai Yao et al.

Design and Optimization of Processes for Recovering Rare Earth Elements from End-of-Life Hard Disk Drives

In this conference paper, we propose a superstructure-based approach to finding the optimal pathways for recovering rare earth elements in their commercialized rare earth oxide form from end-of-life HDDs. The proposed superstructure was modeled as a MILP optimization problem, selecting the net present value as the objective function. Whenever possible, costing data taken from the literature was used to inform this mode. However, due to the novelty of this research area data were often not available thus requiring the generation of flowsheets that were implemented in Aspen Plus. To establish the base case optimal result, projections for the number of EOL HDDs in the U.S. available for recycling and estimates of the projected rare earth oxide prices over the lifetime of the plant were used to inform the model. The model was then expanded to include the recycling of EOL HDDs generated prior to the beginning of plant production (period ranging from 2006 through 2024).

Recycling Rare Earth Elements from End-of-Life Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Motors

In this paper, we propose a superstructure-based approach to finding the optimal pathways for recovering rare earth elements in their commercialized rare earth oxide form from end-of-life EV and HEV motors. Whenever possible, costing data taken from the literature was used to inform this mode. Elongate SiC fuel elements

An elongate fuel element is described that has a silicon carbide cladding enclosing a fuel, such as UO 2 , wherein the fuel is dimensioned relative to the cladding to define gaps at each lateral end of the enclosure sufficiently large such that upon swelling in use, the fuel does not increase the strain on the cladding beyond the limits of the claddings strain tolerance. The lateral gaps at the ends of the fuel allow lateral expansion during swelling that reduces the strain on the cladding.

Process for making modified DTPA-associated organosilica media for use in solid-liquid extraction of rare earth elements

A process for making modified diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-associated media for use in solid-liquid extraction of rare earth elements is disclosed. The process includes functionalizing DTPA with hydrophobic groups to form modified DTPA; dissolving the modified DTPA into a methanol solution; loading the modified DTPA solution to a solid support; rotating the modified DTPA-loaded solid support to allow for association; and removing the methanol to obtain the modified-DTPA-associated media.

Selective solid-state isolation of NMR circuit elements using back-to-back field effect transistors

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) electronics that employ selective solid-state isolation of circuit elements can include solid-state switches, such as back-to-back Field Effect Transistor (FET) pairs, and isolated gate drive electronics adapted to operate the solid-state switches in order to selectively decouple induction coils from receive electronics. The solid-state switches can be placed in series to achieve higher standoff voltages, and can be configured for low on resistance and short switching times. The gate drive electronics can include electrical isolation components adapted to enhance standoff voltages and reduce electrical noise at the selectively isolated receive electronics.

ANS Winter 2024 Summary: MCCAFE: The Monte Carlo Constructor for ATR Fuel Elements

The Irradiation Experiment Neutronics Analysis Department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has implemented a new analysis workflow for experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). One key piece of this workflow is the Monte Carlo Constructor for ATR Fuel Elements, or MCCAFE. For each ATR operating cycle, the Reactor and Nuclear Safety Engineering (RNSE) Department first solves the core in eigenvalue mode and depletes the driver fuel materials. In a separate calculation, neutronics analysts model and deplete the materials of one or more irradiation experiments, usually in a series of fixed-source Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) models of the ATR for neutron transport calculations. It was desirable to use the results of the former calculations to inform the models of the latter. MCCAFE is a Python program developed using American Society of Mechanical Engineers Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 procedures at INL. Its purpose is to take the calculated results from the RNSE depletion solutions and the measured or projected operating parameters from the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS) to generate fixed-source models of the ATR core at given points in time across one or more cycles.

Understanding the Electronic Behavior of f-Element Intermetallics

Due to their partially filled f-orbitals, lanthanide and actinide intermetallic materials exhibit intriguing electronic, structural, and magnetic properties. These materials provide a unique platform to explore exotic magnetic and quantum phenomena that arise from their strongly correlated f-electrons, offering insights into f-electron behavior. Incorporating light elements such as boron and carbon can significantly impact the electronic, chemical, and physical properties of these materials, with varying influence between lanthanides and actinides due to the more localized f-electrons in lanthanides. In this work, lanthanide-based intermetallic single crystals containing light atoms were synthesized using the molten metal flux growth method. In this method, one or more low-melting metals such as aluminum, gallium, tin, and bismuth are used in excess as the reaction medium. This solution-state approach allows for lower reaction temperatures compared to solid-state reactions and enables the isolation of kinetic products rather than thermodynamically stable compounds. The synthesized crystals were analyzed using an extensive array of analytical and computational characterization techniques, including single crystal X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetization measurements, and density functional theory calculations. These analyses provided detailed insights into the structural and magnetic properties of the synthesized materials.

Defining Probe Closure Offset and Scan Stitching Methodology for Element Contact Profilometry in the Hot Fuel Examination Facility

The Element Contact Profilometer (ECP) is a non-destructive post-irradiation examination (PIE) method established in the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF). The ECP suspends a fuel rod with a standard end-fitting in a vertical orientation and draws it between two opposed Sony probes with sapphire rod tips, which measure the diameter directly as a function of vertical stage position through contact profilometry. The ECP is equipped with concave rollers, which pinch the rod to maintain a consist position between these sapphire probe tips. A schematic of the analysis head is shown in Figure 1. The gripper that suspends the rod end-fitting is able to rotate to allow measuring of any azimuthal angle around the rod. This system is used to characterize the diameter of full-length light water reactor (LWR) irradiated fuel rods at multiple azimuthal angles in support of the Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC).
