Acidic attack of perfluorinated alkyl ether lubricant molecules by metal oxide surfaces

The reactions of linear perfluoropolyalkylether (PFAE) lubricants with alpha-Fe2O3 and Fe2O3-based solid superacids were studied. The reaction with alpha-Fe2O3 proceeds in two stages. The first stage is an initial slow catalytic decomposition of the fluid. This reaction releases reactive gaseous products which attach the metal oxide and convert it to FeF3. The second stage is a more rapid decomposition of the fluid, effected by the surface FeF3. A study of the inital breakdown step was performed using alpha-Fe2O3, alpha-Fe2O3 preconverted to FeF3, and sulfate-promoted alpha-Fe2O3 superacids. The results indicate that the breakdown reaction involves acidic attack at fluorine atoms on acetal carbons in the linear PFAE. Possible approaches to combat the problem are outlined.

Improved Li-TiS2 cell cycling in ether-based electrolytes with synergistic additives

Results of the application of 2-MeF and KOH additives to improve the lithium stability in THF, dioxolane, and THF/2-MeTHF solvent-based electrolytes are presented. The stability of these electrolytes with and without additives is evaluated by microcalorimetry and AC impedance spectroscopy. A novel method, cathode turnover number, is proposed to represent the electrolyte performance in a given system. The lithium cycling efficiency and cathode turnover number of the electrolytes are calculated from the cycle life data in experimental Li-TiS2 cells. Overall, THF/2-MeTHF electrolyte containing 2-MeF and/or KOH exhibited higher stability, lithium cycling efficiency, and cathode turnover number compared to THF and dioxolane electrolytes with and without additives.

Acetylene- and Phenylacetylene-Terminated Poly(Arylene Ether Benzimidazole)s (PAEBI's)

Polymers prepared by first synthesizing polymers terminated with hydroxy groups, then reacting them with either 4-ethynylbenzoyl chloride or 4-fluoro-4'-phenylethynylbenzophenone. Endcapped polymers thermally cured to yield materials with attractive combination of properties. Cured acetylene-and phenylacetylene-terminated PAEBI's exhibit higher glass-transition temperatures and better retention of mechanical properties at high temperatures. Cured acetylene- and phenylacetylene-terminated polymers exhibit excellent adhesion to copper foil and polyimide film. Potentially useful as adhesives, coatings, composite matrices, fibers, films, membranes, and moldings.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polyimides with Ether Linkages

A series of polyimides derived from a newly synthesized diamine, namely, 4,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)-2,2-dimethylbiphenyl (BAPD), were developed and characterized. Their physical and thermal properties were compared to polyimides based on'commercially available 2,2-bis(4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl)propane (BAPP).

Uniaxial Stretching of Poly(keto-ether-imide) Films

Fully-cured aromatic polyimides were prepared from various combinations of five dianhydrides and six diamines. When heated progressively under constant load, most of the films elongated rapidly near their glass transition temperatures. In about half of the nineteen materials, the strain was self-limiting - a possible indication of strain-induced crystallinity. The presence of crystallinity was established unambiguously for one material.

Tensile Properties of a Cellulose Ether Hydrogel

Poly(hydroxycellulose) solutions were molded into dumbell-shaped specimens crosslinked with divinyl sulfone. The resulting hydrogels were tested in tension at room temperature and also at a temperature above the 40 C shrinkage transition. In contrast to behavior seen in some other responsive gels, apparent initial tangent moduli were lower in the shrunken state; breaking elongations were significantly higher. Possible molecular mechanisms are suggested, and implications for the design of temperature-responsive actuators ("artificial muscles") from this material are discussed.

Inhibition of gravitropism in oat coleoptiles by the calcium chelator, ethyleneglycol-bis-(beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N'-tetraacetic acid

A treatment period as brief as 8 h in 10(-3) M EGTA completely blocks gravitropism in 70-80% of the treated coleoptiles of oats (Avena sativa L. cv. Garry) without inhibiting growth. Only about 10% of the plants perfused in water failed to exhibit gravitropism. Subsequent perfusion of EGTA-treated plants with calcium completely restores gravitropism; post-perfusion with water does not. After perfusion in water for 10 h, gravistimulated oat coleoptile segments show the same asymmetry of 45Ca distribution as reported earlier for non-perfused coleoptiles and sunflower hypocotyls. The degree of this asymmetry is reduced in those coleoptiles partially inhibited by perfusion in EGTA and is essentially absent in those coleoptiles completely inhibited by EGTA. The fact that calcium reverses the inhibitory effects of EGTA on gravitropism indicates that the inhibition was probably due to a reduction in the availability of free calcium required for one or more of the transduction steps of gravitropism.

Annulated tetra-substituted hydroquinone ether-based redox shuttle additives for lithium-ion batteries

An electrolyte for a lithium-ion electrochemical cell comprises a non-aqueous solution of a lithium salt and a redox shuttle compound, wherein the redox shuttle compound comprises —OR groups at carbons 1 and 4 of a benzene ring; a first hydrocarbon ring fused to carbons 2 and 3 of the benzene ring; and a second hydrocarbon ring fused to the carbons 5 and 6 of the benzene ring, wherein either (i) the first and second hydrocarbon rings together with the benzene ring constitute two fused benzobicyclo[2.2.2]octane ring systems sharing a common benzo core group; or (ii) the first and second hydrocarbon rings together with the benzene ring constitute two fused benzobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane ring systems sharing a common benzo core group.

Ether of Orbifolds

The orbifold lattice has been proposed as a route to practical quantum simulation of Yang--Mills theory, with claims of exponential speedup over all known approaches. Through analytical derivations, Monte Carlo simulation, and explicit circuit construction, we identify compounding costs entirely absent in Kogut--Susskind formulations: a mass-dependent Trotter overhead that scales as $m^4$, non-singlet contamination that grows as $m^2$ and worsens with penalty terms, and a mandatory mass extrapolation. Monte Carlo simulations of SU(3) establish a universal scaling: the continuum limit forces $m^2 \propto 1/a$, binding the Trotter step to the lattice spacing through a cost unique to orbifolds. For a fiducial $10^3$ calculation, the orbifold is $10^4$--$10^{10}$ times more expensive than every published alternative. These results indicate that the claimed computational advantages do not at present survive quantitative scrutiny.

Boundary lubrication, thermal and oxidative stability of a fluorinated polyether and a perfluoropolyether triazine

Boundary lubricating characteristics, thermal stability, and oxidation-corrosion stability were determined for a fluorinated polyether and a perfluoropolyether triazine. A ball-on-disk apparatus, a tensimeter, and oxidation-corrosion apparatus were used. Results were compared to data for a polyphenyl ether and a C-ether. The polyether and triazine yielded better boundary lubricating characteristics than either the polyphenyl ether or C-ether. The polyphenyl ether had the greatest thermal stability (443 C) while the other fluids had stabilities in the range 389 to 397 C. Oxidation-corrosion results indicated the following order of stabilities: perfluoropolyether trizine greater than polyphenyl ether greater than C-ether greater than fluorinated polyether.

Concentration-dependent ion correlations impact the electrochemical behavior of calcium battery electrolytes.

Ion interactions strongly determine the solvation environments of multivalent electrolytes even at concentrations below that required for practical battery-based energy storage. This statement is particularly true of electrolytes utilizing ethereal solvents due to their low dielectric constants. These solvents are among the most commonly used for multivalent batteries based on reactive metals (Mg, Ca) due to their reductive stability. Recent developments in multivalent electrolyte design have produced a variety of new salts for Mg2+ and Ca2+ that test the limits of weak coordination strength and oxidative stability. Such electrolytes have great potential for enabling full-cell cycling of batteries based on these working ions. However, the ion interactions in these electrolytes exhibit significant and non-intuitive concentration relationships. In this work, we investigate a promising exemplar, calcium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropoxy)borate (Ca(BHFIP)(2)), in the ethereal solvents 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) across a concentration range of several orders of magnitude. Surprisingly, we find that effective salt dissociation is lower at relatively dilute concentrations (e.g. 0.01 M) than at higher concentrations (e.g. 0.2 M). Combined experimental and computational dielectric and X-ray spectroscopic analyses of the changes occurring in the Ca2+ solvation environment across these concentration regimes reveals a progressive transition from well-defined solvent-separated ion pairs to de-correlated free ions. This transition in ion correlation results in improvements in both conductivity and calcium cycling stability with increased salt concentration. Comparison with previous findings involving more strongly associating salts highlights the generality of this phenomenon, leading to important insight into controlling ion interactions in ether-based multivalent battery electrolytes.

Production of drop-in biodiesel blendstocks via competitive acid-catalyzed dehydration reactions using ethanol oligomerization products

Ethanol can be converted into diesel fuel ethers using a three-step catalytic approach that involves ethanol oligomerization to larger alcohols, hydrogenolysis of the esters followed by dehydration of the C4 to C8 alcohols into ethers. In this paper we report results for the dehydration of a mixture of C4 – C8 alcohols using a zeolite Y catalyst in a continuous flow reactor. Mono-molecular dehydration of the alcohols produces olefins while bi-molecular dehydration of the alcohol produces ethers. Increasing the pressure increases the ether selectivity while decreasing the pressure produces more olefins. Linear alcohol feeds produce more C8+ ethers, while branched and secondary alcohols lead to more olefins. Olefin and coke selectivities increase with increasing carbon chain length of alcohols. Secondary alcohols lead to higher coke selectivities. Furthermore, ethanol/Butanol oligomerization experiments showed that the incoming dehydration feedstock can be grown to larger C6+ alcohol fractions, leading to higher yields of C10+ diesel-range ethers.
