Ablative-filled honeycomb composites

Two techniques reduce fabrication cost and complexity: net surface molding permits ablative insulators with sculptured tapers to be produced over substrate having unpredictable irregularities; subsurface molding results in ablative surface below honeycomb.

A model for the pyrolysis of unfilled and filled polymers and comparisons with NBS smoke-density chamber data

This paper considers a model for the pyrolysis of polymers for use in mass loss and smoke density predictions in a fire situation. It is based on the fundamental postulate that the overall rate-limiting reactions are in the relatively low temperature condensed phase; the rate limiting step is the polymer degradation to a vaporizable state. The state of the polymer (chain length) at the surface is specified by the vapor pressure equilibrium criterion. For the case of polymers with inert fillers, like alumina trihydrate, the further assumption is made that the linear regression rate of the material is identical to the unfilled material's at the same surface temperature. The fraction of polymer mass loss converted to smoke is inferred from the literature. The smoke density in the NBS-smoke density chamber is predicted for a polyester and the same polyester with two different loads of alumina trihydrate filler. Diffusional effects in the smoke spreading are considered in an elementary manner. The comparisons with experimental data are encouraging. The overall fire characteristics are predicted using only the fundamental physicochemical property values of ingredients.

Investigation of the effects of construction and stage filling of reservoirs on the environment and ecology: Preproject baseline

The author has identified the following significant results: (1) LANDSAT imagery can be used effectively as a baseline for detection of environmental change, resulting from construction of a major inland reservoir. (2) Forest cover can be observed adequately on two-band composite enlargements at a scale of 1:130,000. (3) Forest cover delineated on LANDSAT enlargements compares accurately with ground truth at a scale of 1:250,000. (4) A dual image mapping technique superimposing winter, summer, and spring scenes using the zoom transfer scope facilitates the determination. (5) The same technique can be used to detect changes in the project area, resulting from construction activities. (6) High altitude aircraft imagery can also be used to interpret changes in land use and forest type. (7) Construction operations can be more clearly detailed on the air photos than on LANDSAT imagery.

Experimental investigations on sodium-filled heat pipes

The possibilities of producing heat pipes and, especially, the necessary capillary structures are discussed. Several types of heat pipes were made from stainless steel and tested at temperatures between 400 and 1055 deg C. The thermal power was determined by a calorimeter. Results indicate: bubble-free evaporation of sodium from rectangular open chennels is possible with a heat flux of more than 1,940 W/sq cm at 1055 C. The temperature drop along the tube could be measured only at low temperatures. A subdivided heat pipe worked against the gravitational field. A heat pipe with a capillary structure made of a rolled screen was supported by rings and bars operated at 250 W/sq cm heat flux in the evaporating region.

Weathering of a liquid-filled solar collector

Report describes procedures and results of tests for effects of weathering on flat-plate liquid solar collector. Thermal performance was measured before and after natural weathering for 15-1/2 months by using Marshall Space Flight solar simulator.

Recirculating sprayer for fiber-filled paints

Recirculating paint sprayer applies spray of coarse filler in highly volatile solvent. Sprayer was developed for applying insulation material containing epxoy resin, glass fibers, and inert fillers suspended in chlorinated solvents. Sprayer resists abrasive action of fiberglass filler and chemical activity of solvent. Pump and position ensure more uniform pressure at spray gun without backpressure regulator, which tended to clog in old sprayer.

Blood filling and flow in lungs during change in body position in space

In the horizontal position (supine and lateral), in the upright position (head up and head down) and during change of the cat body position in space, quantitative responses of regional blood volume and blood flow in the lungs (ml/100 cu cm) revealed presence of the gradient in the gravitation direction. Blood volume and blood flow of different lung portions changed qualitatively and quantitatively in different ways. These changes occurred only in the direction producing the equality of regional hydrostatical and hemodynamic loads in the lungs at either horizontal level.

NASTRAN analysis of heat-transfer fluid fill pipe failure

An example that shows the difficulties of failure analyses and the advantage of the finite element method (NASTRAN) in assisting in determining the true cause of a failure is presented. In this example, cracks were developing along a pipe weld. After discarding several possible causes for the failures, it was finally determined that the problem was due to stress corrosion cracking associated with a rather unusual and novel environmental condition.

Solar Concentrator is Gas-Filled

Proposed reflector for concentrating solar rays is made of two flexible polymer films with pressurized gas between them. First film is clear, serving as a protective cover and pressure envelope; second film is metalized to serve as concentrating mirror. Focal length of mirror is adjusted by changing gas pressure.
