A two color, dual beam backscattering laser Doppler velocimeter

A laser Doppler velocimeter has been developed which uses two of the colors emitted from an argon ion laser for the simultaneous measurement of orthogonal velocities. Designed for use in a 2.13 m by 3.05 m wind tunnel, it is capable of traversing its focal volume across spatially unstable flows at scan speeds of up to 1.15 m/sec. Its optical layout and principles of operation are discussed and the data from a typical traversal of a trailing wing tip vortex are presented.

Design of thermal protection system for 8 foot HTST combustor

The combustor in the 8-foot high temperature structures tunnel at the NASA-Langley Research Center has encountered cracking over a period of 50-250 tunnel tests within a limited range of the required operating envelope. A program was conducted which analyzed the failed combustor liner hardware and determined that the mechanism of failure was vibratory fatigue. A vibration damper system using wave springs located axially between the liner T-bar and the liner support was designed as an intermediate solution to extend the life of the current two-pass regenerative air-cooled liner. The effects of liner wall thickness, cooling air passage height, stiffener ring geometry, reflective coatings, and liner material selection were investigated for these designs. Preliminary layout design arrangements including the external water-cooling system requirements, weight estimates, installation requirements and preliminary estimates of manufacturing costs were prepared for the most promissing configurations. A state-of-the-art review of thermal barrier coatings and an evaluation of reflective coatings for the gasside surface of air-cooled liners are included.

Study of multiple cycles valves

A discussion is presented regarding valves which can be cycled repeatedly and are available from industry for application in the inlet system for the Pioneer Venus Probe mass spectrometer. Both solenoid type and latching type valves are considered. The study is divided into two principal areas: (1) preparation of a valve specification reflecting the requirements of the inlet system cyclic valves for the Pioneer Venus Probe mass spectrometer and the submittal of this specification to potential valve suppliers for their response and proposal; (2) preparation of a design layout of an optimum cyclic valve meeting all of the valve specification requirements.

A graphical test for checking the stability of a linear time-invariant feedback system.

A continuous-time scalar linear time-invariant feedback system is considered for the purpose of checking Willems' (1969, 1970) graphical test for a scalar linear time-invariant feedback system with constant feedback. Heavy reliance is placed on the theory of almost periodic functions. Following definition of the problem and layout of notation, attention is given to solution of the problem, considering only the almost periodic part of the open-loop transfer function.

An H2-O2 auxiliary power unit for Space Shuttle.

Auxiliary power units operating on hydrogen and oxygen have the potential for significantly improved performance and payload for the Space Shuttle vehicles. In order to identify the technologies required for these units and to identify promising system configurations, contracted studies provided component and system-configuration screening analysis and detailed analysis of two preliminary system layouts. From these studies, Lewis Research Center has selected for further investigation a recuperated open-cycle hydrogen-oxygen turbine-driven APU concept with pressure-modulated reactant control. This paper discusses the reference system, the control mode, component arrangement, performance potential, and the technology program for this system.

High temperature antenna development for space shuttle, volume 1

Design concepts for high temperature flush mounted Space Shuttle Orbiter antenna systems are discussed. The design concepts include antenna systems for VHF, L-band, S-band, C-band and Ku-band frequencies. The S-band antenna system design was completed and test hardware fabricated. It was then subjected to electrical and thermal testing to establish design requirements and determine reuse capabilities. The thermal tests consisted of applying ten high temperature cycles simulating the Orbiter entry heating environment in an arc tunnel plasma facility and observing the temperature distributions. Radiation pattern and impedance measurements before and after high temperature exposure were used to evaluated the antenna systems performance. Alternate window design concepts are considered. Layout drawings, supported by thermal and strength analyses, are given for each of the antenna system designs. The results of the electrical and thermal testing of the S-band antenna system are given.

Brayton heat exchanger unit development program (alternate design)

A Brayton Heat Exchanger Unit Alternate Design (BHXU-Alternate) consisting of a recuperator, a heat sink heat exchanger, and a gas ducting system, was designed and fabricated. The design was formulated to provide a high performance unit suitable for use in a long-life Brayton-cycle powerplant. Emphasis was on double containment against external leakage and leakage of the organic coolant into the gas stream. A parametric analysis and design study was performed to establish the optimum component configurations to achieve low weight and size and high reliability, while meeting the requirements of high effectiveness and low pressure drop. Layout studies and detailed mechanical and structural design were performed to obtain a flight-type packaging arrangement, including the close-coupled integration of the BHXU-Alternate with the Brayton Rotating Unit (BRU).

Advanced space engine preliminary design

Analysis and design of an optimum LO2/LH2, combustion topping cycle, 88,964 Newtons (20,000-pound) thrust, liquid rocket engine was conducted. The design selected is well suited to high-energy, upper-stage engine applications such as the Space Tug and embodies features directed toward optimization of vehicle performance. A configuration selection was conducted based on prior Air Force Contracts, and additional criteria for optimum stage performance. Following configuration selection, analyses and design of the major components and engine systems were conducted to sufficient depth to provide layout drawings suitable for subsequent detailing. In addition, engine packaging to a common interface and a retractable nozzle concept were defined. Alternative development plans and related costs were also established. The design embodies high-performance, low-weight, low NPSH requirements (saturated propellant inlet conditions at start), idle-mode operation, and autogenous pressurization. The design is the result of the significant past and current LO2/LH2 technology efforts of the NASA centers and the Air Force, as well as company-funded programs.
