A simplified, compact static shift register

Shift register was developed which uses only one D type flip-flop and improves packaging density by approximately 25% over the usual arrangement. Circuit is compromise between full master-slave arrangement and dynamic shift register, with limitation only of length of time that clock can be held high during new data entry.

Thermal contact resistance in a non-ideal joint

The contact of two rough, wavy surfaces; the contact of two rough but nominally flat plates pressed together over a concentrated area; and the contact of two rough but nominally flat plates bolted together are considered. In each case the pressure distribution is calculated as a function of the surface properties. In the case of wavy surfaces it is found that all necessary information for any combination of parameters can be reduced to one master graph. In the other two cases one such graph is needed for each geometry used. The resulting pressure distributions are used in a specific heat transfer example and the total joint resistance versus roughness is presented. A method for decreasing the resistance by increasing the roughness is shown.

Modular space station phase B extension integrated ground operations

Requirements for development test, manufacturing, facilities, GSE, training, logistics support, and launch operations are described. The prime integrating requirement is the early establishment of a common data base and its use throughout the design, development, and operational life of the station. The common data base is defined, and the concept of its use is presented. Development requirements for the station modules and subsystems are outlined along with a master development phasing chart.

Design, development, fabrication and delivery of register and multiplexer units

Two complementary MOS monolithic chip types were developed, which contain a register and multiplexer unit to be used in the central processing unit of a digital computer. The partition of the logic into a chip size consistent with the characteristics of the packages is discussed. The logic was implemented by specially configured circuitry designed to layout, as well as to optimize, performance by taking advantage of the properties of CMOS logic. Of several approaches considered for generating LSI CMOS arrays, the CMOS standard cell array design technique was selected. These design automation techniques were used to generate the chip layout, art work and working master plates, followed by the fabrication and testing of the two chip types. Sixty functional LSI arrays were delivered.

Fatigue crack tip deformation and fatigue crack propagation

The effects of stress ratio, prestress cycling and plate thickness on the fatigue crack propagation rate are studied on 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Fatigue crack propagation rate increases with the plate thickness and the stress ratio. Prestress cycling below the static yield strength has no noticeable effect on the fatigue crack propagation rate. However, prestress cycling above the static yield strength causes the material to strain harden and increases the fatigue crack propagation rate. Crack tip deformation is used to study the fatigue crack propagation. The crack tip strains and the crack opening displacements were measured from moire fringe patterns. The moire fringe patterns were obtained by a double exposure technique, using a very high density master grille (13,400 lines per inch).

The work performed in the following areas is summarized: (1) Analysis of Realistic nuclear-propelled vehicle was analyzed using the Marshall Space Flight Center computer code package. This code package includes one and two dimensional discrete ordinate transport, point kernel, and single scatter techniques, as well as cross section preparation and data processing codes, (2) Techniques were developed to improve the automated data transfer in the coupled computation method of the computer code package and improve the utilization of this code package on the Univac-1108 computer system. (3) The MSFC master data libraries were updated.

Relabeling of finite element meshes using a random process

An algorithm is presented to relabel automatically the nodes of an arbitrary finite-element mesh. The purpose of such relabeling is to reduce the bandwidth of the master stiffness matrix produced by the finite-element method. The algorithm uses a random process for the relabeling. Computing time is reduced substantially, compared to systematic methods.

Design review - A tool for all seasons.

The origins of design review are considered together with questions of definitions. The main characteristics which distinguish the concept of design review discussed from the basic master-apprentice relationship include competence, objectivity, formality, and a systematic approach. Preliminary, major, and final reviews are the steps used in the management of the design and development process in each company. It is shown that the design review is generically a systems engineering milestone review with certain unique characteristics.

A remote manipulator system for the space shuttle.

Shuttle mission objectives are examined. The outstanding characteristic of the payload handling system will be its versatility. A practical system is needed that combines man's adaptability, skill, and reflexes with the strength, endurance, and relative indestructibility of a machine. Systems that meet these standards, called teleoperators, have been in use for many years. The other half of the problem, the retention of man's natural manipulative skills, is solved by use of a 'master-slave' control system. Two independent, parallel preliminary design studies based on the requirements considered were conducted.

Time synchronization via lunar radar.

The advent of round-trip radar measurements has permitted the determination of the ranges to the nearby planets with greater precision than was previously possible. When the distances to the planets are known with high precision, the propagation delay for electromagnetic waves reflected by the planets may be calculated and used to synchronize remotely located clocks. Details basic to the operation of a lunar radar indicate a capability for clock synchronization to plus or minus 20 microsec. One of the design goals for this system was to achieve a simple semiautomatic receiver for remotely located tracking stations. The lunar radar system is in operational use for deep space tracking at Jet Propulsion Laboratory and synchronizes five world-wide tracking stations with a master clock at Goldstone, Calif. Computers are programmed to correct the Goldstone transmissions for transit time delay and Doppler shifts so as to be received on time at the tracking stations; this dictates that only one station can be synchronized at a given time period and that the moon must be simultaneously visible to both the transmitter and receiver for a minimum time of 10 min.-

A dynamic response and eye scanning data base useful in the development of theories and methods for the description of control/display relationships

A set of specially prepared digital tapes is reported which contain synchronized measurements of pilot scanning behavior, control response, and vehicle response obtained during instrument landing system approaches made in a fixed-base DC-8 transport simulator. The objective of the master tape is to provide a common data base which can be used by the research community to test theories, models, and methods for describing and analyzing control/display relations and interactions. The experimental conditions and tasks used to obtain the data and the detailed format of the tapes are described. Conventional instrument panel and controls were used, with simulated vertical gust and glide slope beam bend forcing functions. Continuous pilot eye fixations and scan traffic on the panel were measured. Both flight director and standard localizer/glide slope types of approaches were made, with both fixed and variable instrument range sensitivities.
