Engineering studies of vectorcardiographs in blood pressure measuring systems

The following projects involving cardiovascular instrumentation were conducted: (1) the development and fabrication of a three-dimensional display measurement system for vectorcardiograms, (2) the development and fabrication of a cardiovascular monitoring system to noninvasively monitor beat-by-beat the blood pressure and heart rate using aortic pulse wave velocity, (3) the development of software for an interactive system to analyze systolic time interval data, and (4) the development of microprocessor-based physiologic instrumentation, focussing initially on EKG rhythm analysis. Brief descriptions of these projects were given.

Engineering studies of vectorcardiographs in blood pressure measuring systems, appendix 3

The following subjects were covered: (1) ASM80 manual, (2) signal preprocessing as an aid to on-line EKG analysis, and (3) high speed evaluation of magnetic tape recordings of electrocardiograms. A description of the ASM80 symbolic assembly program for the INTEL 8080 microprocessor and a user's manual were presented. The capability of three redundancy reduction algorithms to produce adequate representations of electrocardiographic data was examined. A hardware device was constructed which carried out zero order interpolation on a signal. Examination of the zero order interpolators reconstructed signal indicated that this representation was adequate for analysis of rhythm. A system to analyze magnetic tapes of electrocardiograms recorded over 24 hour intervals was designed. The recordings are sampled 200 times per second using a Nova computer and a special interface system. This system was tested on several recordings of clinical data, containing over 75 premature ventricular contractions, each one of which was flagged.

The mini-O, a digital superhet, or a truly low-cost Omega navigation receiver

A quartz tuning fork filter circuit and some unique CMOS clock logic methods provide a very simple OMEGA-VLF receiver with true hyperbolic station pair phase difference outputs. An experimental system was implemented on a single battery-operated circuit board requiring only an external antenna preamplifier, and LOP output recorder. A bench evaluation and preliminary navigation tests indicate the technique is viable and can provide very low-cost OMEGA measurement systems. The method is promising for marine use with small boats in the present form, but might be implemented in conjunction with digital microprocessors for airborne navigation aids.

Automated parking garage system model

A one-twenty-fifth scale model of the key components of an automated parking garage system is described. The design of the model required transferring a vehicle from an entry level, vertically (+Z, -Z), to a storage location at any one of four storage positions (+X, -X, +Y, +Y, -Y) on the storage levels. There are three primary subsystems: (1) a screw jack to provide the vertical motion of the elevator, (2) a cam-driven track-switching device to provide X to Y motion, and (3) a transfer cart to provide horizontal travel and a small amount to vertical motion for transfer to the storage location. Motive power is provided by dc permanent magnet gear motors, one each for the elevator and track switching device and two for the transfer cart drive system (one driving the cart horizontally and the other providing the vertical transfer). The control system, through the use of a microprocessor, provides complete automation through a feedback system which utilizes sensing devices.

Multi-star processing and gyro filtering for the video inertial pointing system

The video inertial pointing (VIP) system is being developed to satisfy the acquisition and pointing requirements of astronomical telescopes. The VIP system uses a single video sensor to provide star position information that can be used to generate three-axis pointing error signals (multi-star processing) and for input to a cathode ray tube (CRT) display of the star field. The pointing error signals are used to update the telescope's gyro stabilization system (gyro filtering). The CRT display facilitates target acquisition and positioning of the telescope by a remote operator. Linearized small angle equations are used for the multistar processing and a consideration of error performance and singularities lead to star pair location restrictions and equation selection criteria. A discrete steady-state Kalman filter which uses the integration of the gyros is developed and analyzed. The filter includes unit time delays representing asynchronous operations of the VIP microprocessor and video sensor. A digital simulation of a typical gyro stabilized gimbal is developed and used to validate the approach to the gyro filtering.

Architecture and data processing alternatives for Tse computer. Volume 1: Tse logic design concepts and the development of image processing machine architectures

Digital computer components which perform two dimensional array logic operations (Tse logic) on binary data arrays are described. The properties of Golay transforms which make them useful in image processing are reviewed, and several architectures for Golay transform processors are presented with emphasis on the skeletonizing algorithm. Conventional logic control units developed for the Golay transform processors are described. One is a unique microprogrammable control unit that uses a microprocessor to control the Tse computer. The remaining control units are based on programmable logic arrays. Performance criteria are established and utilized to compare the various Golay transform machines developed. A critique of Tse logic is presented, and recommendations for additional research are included.

Application of a dedicated micro-processor for automatic data acquisition of load strain and acoustic-emission data

This paper describes an automatic system for acquisition, logging and analysis of stress, strain and acoustic emission data. The complete system is a combination of several standard items of equipment and a newly developed intelligent data logger which has the capability to send data directly to a large scale computer for reduction and plotting. The data logging and all interfacing with peripheral equipment are accomplished using digital electronics. The heart of the system is a four-bit microprocessor and digital cassette tape unit. The system, which is controlled by instructions from a cathode ray tube terminal, has the capability to transmit data from the cassette unit to a large computer via a time sharing option. Typical results are presented for acoustic emission count rate and total count curves superimposed on stress-strain diagrams for boron/epoxy advanced composites.

User guide to a command and control system; a part of a prelaunch wind monitoring program

A set of programs called Command and Control System (CCS), intended as a user manual, is described for the operation of CCS by the personnel supporting the wind monitoring portion of the launch mission. Wind data obtained by tracking balloons is sent by electronic means using telephone lines to other locations. Steering commands are computed from a system called ADDJUST for the on-board computer and relays this data. Data are received and automatically stored in a microprocessor, then via a real time program transferred to the UNIVAC 1100/40 computer. At this point the data is available to be used by the Command and Control system.

A high speed imaging system for nuclear diagnostics

A high speed imaging system based on state-of-the-art photosensor arrays was designed for use in nuclear diagnostics. The system is comprised of a front end rapid scan solid state camera, a high speed digitizer, and a PCM line driver in a downhole package and a memory buffer system in an uphole trailer. The downhole camera takes a snapshot of a nuclear device created flux stream, digitizes the image and transmits it to the uphole memory system before being destroyed. The memory system performs two functions: it retains the data for local display and processing by a microprocessor, and it buffers the data for retransmission at slower rates to a computational facility. In the talk, the impetus for such a system as well as its operation was discussed, along with systems under development which incorporate higher data rates and more resolution.
