Parametric Optimization of Nanostructured Alumina Forming Austenitic Alloys

Alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) alloys provide excellent oxidation resistance through the formation of a stable alumina scale, but their relatively high Ni content might limit application in core structural components because of helium generation and swelling under irradiation. Increasing the density of nanoscale features in the microstructure is a promising route to improve sink strength and mitigate these effects. Conventional oxide dispersion–strengthened (ODS) steels achieve this through mechanical alloying (MA), but the approach is costly and difficult to scale. In this milestone, additive manufacturing was applied as an alternative pathway to fabricate nanostructured AFA (NAFA) alloys with dual precipitation of oxides and nitrides enabled by reactive atmosphere processing. In FY25, two compositions, NAFA-1 (AFA-05) and NAFA-2, were produced and compared. Both alloys achieved densities above 99% of theoretical values, but NAFA-2 exhibited microcracking associated with Nb-rich intermetallic formation, indicating the need for further chemistry optimization. Nitrogen and oxygen uptake was confirmed on selected builds, demonstrating the intended dual-precipitate dispersion. Mechanical testing showed that AM-processed NAFA alloys exceed conventionally produced ODS steels in high-temperature tensile strength and fracture toughness. Preliminary Cu ion irradiation results further suggest improved resistance compared to wrought austenitic alloys. While the current alloys are promising for their compatibility in high-temperature air or liquid Pb environments, modifications to composition will be required for long-term operation in high-temperature impure sodium systems. Future work will focus on refining alloy chemistry to suppress laser powder bed fusion–induced cracking and scaling production to reactor-relevant dimensions using directed energy deposition as a pathway toward net-shape cladding fabrication.

Parametric and Robustness Studies of Qudit Mediated Quantum State Transfer and Entanglement Creation

The large number of available states participating in quantum state evolution in a system of qudits translates into better thermal resilience, for quantum state transfer (QST) and distributed entangled states, than a system of 2-level qubits. In this report we study the dependence of fidelities of the above processes on various system parameters. Sensitivity to modes of dissipation and errors is also studied. An alternative and potentially more efficient scheme to create Bell states is used.

The Poisson tensor completion parametric estimator

We introduce the Poisson tensor completion (PTC) estimator that exploits inter-sample relationships to compute a low-rank Poisson tensor decomposition of the frequency histogram for samples of a multivariate distribution. Our crucial observation is that the histogram bins are an instance of a space partitioning of counts and thus can be identified with a spatial non-homogeneous Poisson process. The Poisson tensor decomposition leads to a completion of the mean measure over all bins—including those containing few to no samples—and leads to our proposed estimator. A Poisson tensor decomposition models the underlying distribution of the count data and guarantees non-negative estimated values obviating the need for additional constraints to ensure non-negativity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our PTC estimator is a substantial improvement over standard histogram-based estimators for sub-Gaussian probability distributions because of the concentration of norm phenomenon.

Broad Frequency Shift of Parametric Processes in Epsilon-Near-Zero Time-Varying Media

The ultrafast changes of material properties induced by short laser pulses can lead to a frequency shift of reflected and transmitted radiation. Recent reports highlight how such a frequency shift is enhanced in spectral regions where the material features a near-zero real part of the permittivity. Here, we investigate the frequency shift for fields generated by four-wave mixing. In our experiment, we observed a frequency shift of more than 60 nm (compared to the pulse width of ~40 nm) in the phase conjugated radiation generated by a 500 nm aluminium-doped zinc oxide (AZO) film pumped close to the epsilon-near-zero wavelength. Our results indicate applications of time-varying media for nonlinear optics and frequency conversion.

Theoretical Analysis of Fractional Viscoelastic Flow in Circular Pipes: Parametric Study

Pipe flow is one of the most commonly used models to describe fluid dynamics. The concept of fractional derivative has been recently found very useful and much more accurate in predicting dynamics of viscoelastic fluids compared with classic models. In this paper, we capitalize on our previous study and consider space-time dynamics of flow velocity and stress for fractional Maxwell, Zener, and Burgers models. We demonstrate that the behavior of these quantities becomes much more complex (compared to integer-order classical models) when adjusting fractional order and elastic parameters. We investigate mutual influence of fractional orders and consider their limiting value combinations. Finally, we show that the models developed can be reduced to classical ones when appropriate fractional orders are set.

Parametric Study of Panel PCM–Air Heat Exchanger Designs

Heat exchangers, devices for the transfer of heat between two or more working fluids, are extensively used in cooling applications and heating applications. Heat exchangers in buildings are typically components of space-conditioning systems, as well as of water-heating applications. Heat exchangers are also sometimes used in applications that require storage and release of energy at specific times. Phase change materials (PCMs) enhance these heat-exchange processes, given their ability to melt and solidify at a fixed range of temperatures, absorbing or releasing significant amounts of latent heat. Five different configurations of PCM–air heat exchangers for thermal control in buildings are analyzed in this work. The heat exchangers were fitted with PCM encapsulated in plastic and composite pouches of various shapes, and packaged in stackable panel layers. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of coupled incompressible fluid and conjugate heat transfer were performed on the designs. The phase change process was numerically modelled using the apparent heat capacity method. Steady-state CFD simulations provided quantification of pressure drop as a function of air flow velocity. Transient simulation results describe the thermal evolution of PCM in the pouches, helping to determine the best performing configuration with respect to total thermal charging time.

Hybrid Quantum-Classical Eigensolver without Variation or Parametric Gates

The use of near-term quantum devices that lack quantum error correction, for addressing quantum chemistry and physics problems, requires hybrid quantum-classical algorithms and techniques. Here, we present a process for obtaining the eigenenergy spectrum of electronic quantum systems. This is achieved by projecting the Hamiltonian of a quantum system onto a limited effective Hilbert space specified by a set of computational bases. From this projection, an effective Hamiltonian is obtained. Furthermore, a process for preparing short depth quantum circuits to measure the corresponding diagonal and off-diagonal terms of the effective Hamiltonian is given, whereby quantum entanglement and ancilla qubits are used. The effective Hamiltonian is then diagonalized on a classical computer using numerical algorithms to obtain the eigenvalues. The use case of this approach is demonstrated for ground state and excited states of BeH2 and LiH molecules, and the density of states, which agrees well with exact solutions. Additionally, hardware demonstration is presented using IBM quantum devices for H2 molecule.

A Parametric Study of the SASI Comparing General Relativistic and Nonrelativistic Treatments

We present numerical results from a parameter study of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI), investigating the impact of general relativity (GR) on the dynamics. Using GR hydrodynamics with GR gravity, and nonrelativistic (NR) hydrodynamics with Newtonian gravity, in an idealized model setting, we vary the initial radius of the shock, and by varying its mass and radius in concert, the proto-neutron star compactness. We investigate four compactnesses expected in a post-bounce core-collapse supernova (CCSN). We find that GR leads to a longer SASI oscillation period, with ratios between the GR and NR cases as large as 1.29 for the highest-compactness suite. We also find that GR leads to a slower SASI growth rate, with ratios between the GR and NR cases as low as 0.47 for the highest-compactness suite. We discuss implications of our results for CCSN simulations.
