Adjustable indicating device for load position

An indicating device designed to provide an electrical signal relative to the position of a load is described. The device has a central housing with two wing structures on each side which support conventional switch means having cantilevered arms. Extending through the housing is a movable shaft that is spring biased to a forward extended position and adapted to respond against a load being positioned. The rear end of the movable shaft has an adjustable cam means which acts upon the cantilevered ams to cause a switching action upon shifting of the movable shaft by a load.

Kitt Peak measurements of P/Halley positions

Techniques used for the acquisition and reduction of imaging data for astrometric positions of comet Halley at Kitt Peak National Observatory are described. These techniques are applicable to the comet while it is fainter than magnitude V approximately 21. They yield positions that are uncertain by + or - 0.9 arcsec. The reliability and consistency of the positions already derived could be improved by as much as a factor of four in a more ambitious astrometric program.

Arcsecond positions for milliarcsecond VLBI nuclei of extragalactic radio sources. III - 74 sources

VLBI measurements at 2290 and 8420 MHz on baselines of 10,000 km have been used to determine the positions of the milliarcsecond nuclei in 74 extragalactic radio sources. Estimated accuracies range from 0.1 to 4.3 arcsec in both right ascension and declination with typical accuracies of about 0.3 arcsec. The observed sources are part of an all-sky VLBI catalog of milliarcsecond radio sources. Arcsecond positions have been determined for 819 sources. These positions are presently being used to identify optical counterparts in the southern hemisphere.

Configuration of the high-latitude thermosphere neutral circulation for IMF B(y) negative and positive

Asymmetries in the Northern Hemisphere neutral circulation that are dependent on the sign of the east-west 'B(y)' component of the IMF are presently illustrated by measurements of the neutral wind in the polar F-region which were conducted by the DE-2 spacecraft. The data thus obtained are categorized according to the sign of the hourly averaged IMF B(y) component measured by ISEE-3 for the hour preceding the DE-2 measurements. It is noted that there is (1) an asymmetry in the polar cap neutral flow velocity, with the region of most rapid antisunward flow shifting from the dawn side to the dusk side of the polar cap as B(y) changes from positive to negative; (2) a shift occurs in the magnetic local time of the region of entry of neutral gas into the polar cap, from a location on the dawn side of the moon-midnight meridian for B(y) positive to one more biased, for B(y) negative; and (3) there is an enhancement of velocities associated with the dawn anticlockwise neutral vortex for B(y) negative relative to those observed for B(y) positive.

Numerical simulation of positive-potential conductors in the presence of a plasma and a secondary-emitting dielectric

A 2 1/2-dimensional, cylindrically symmetric particle in cell program is used to simulate the interaction of a plasma with a positively biased disk covered by a dielectric material (Kapton). Several runs using different combinations of bias voltages and secondary electron yields are discussed. Special attention is paid to the role of the secondaries as the dielectric surface changes from a negative potential to become increasingly positive. This is termed the 'snapover' process. The contribution due to secondaries is examined by plotting the distribution (number versus position) of the particles emitted by the impacting on the dielectric. These plots show that secondaries are drawn back into the dielectric as well as the conductor in the case of snapover. Mechanisms and experimental implications for these particular distributions are discussed.

Milliarcsecond structures, VLBI and optical positions of 8 HIPPARCOS radio stars

Mark 3 VLBI observations show evidence for complex radio structures on the milliarcsecond angular scale of 8 HIPPARCOS radio stars. Their VLBI positions and optical positions measured with the automatic meridian circle in Bordeaux are presented. Comparison between the optical and VLBI positions of these stars shows that the JPL VLBI reference frame and the FK4 fundamental catalog are aligned at the level of precision of the optical measurements (O".05).

Sagittarius A(asterisk) and the positions of infrared sources in the galactic center

Observations of the central region of the Galaxy have been made with the University of Rochester 32 x 32 element InSb array camera in the 1-5 micron wavelength range. The 2.2-micron images have been used to determine positions of infrared features in comparison with that of the galactic center compact radio source Sgr A(asterisk). No infrared source lies precisely at the Sgr A(asterisk) position in the images. However, the infrared source closest to the Sgr A(asterisk) position is a previously little studied source directly south of IRS 7 that was called IRS 16NW and not the often referred to IRS 16C. IRS 16NW is coincident with one of the very red objects seen in various 1-micron images of this region.

Ab initio calculations on the positive ions of the alkaline-earth oxides, fluorides, and hydroxides

Theoretical dissociation energies are presented for the alkaline-earth fluoride, hydroxide, and oxide positive ions that are considered to be accurate to 0.1-0.2 eV. The r(e) for the positive ions are found to be consistently shorter than the corresponding neutrals by 0.07 + or -0.02 A. The bonding in the ground states is demonstrated to be of predominantly M + 2 X - character. The a 3 Pi and A 1 Pi are found to lie considerably above the X 1 Sigma + ground states of the alkaline-earth fluoride and hydroxide positive ions. The overall agreement of the theoretical ionization potentials with the available experimental appearance potentials is satisfactory; these values should represent the most accurate and consistent set available.

Advanced optical position sensors for magnetically suspended wind tunnel models

A major concern to aerodynamicists has been the corruption of wind tunnel test data by model support structures, such as stings or struts. A technique for magnetically suspending wind tunnel models was considered by Tournier and Laurenceau (1957) in order to overcome this problem. This technique is now implemented with the aid of a Large Magnetic Suspension and Balance System (LMSBS) and advanced position sensors for measuring model attitude and position within the test section. Two different optical position sensors are discussed, taking into account a device based on the use of linear CCD arrays, and a device utilizing area CID cameras. Current techniques in image processing have been employed to develop target tracking algorithms capable of subpixel resolution for the sensors. The algorithms are discussed in detail, and some preliminary test results are reported.

Digital program for calculating static pressure position error

A computer program written to calculate the static pressure position error of airspeed systems contains five separate methods for determining position error, of which the user may select from one to five at a time. The program uses data from both the test aircraft and the ground-based radar to calculate the error. In addition, some of the methods require rawinsonde data or an atmospheric analysis, or both. The program output lists the corrections to Mach number, altitude, and static pressure that are due to position error. Reference values such as angle of attack, angle of sideslip, indicated Mach number, indicated pressure altitude, stagnation pressure, and total temperature are also listed.

Synchronization tracking in pulse position modulation receiver

A clock pulse generator for decoding pulse position modulation in an optical communication receiver is synchronized by a delay tracking loop which multiplies impulses of a data pulse by the square wave clock pulses from the generator to produce positive impulses when the clock pulse is of one level, and negative impulses when the clock pulse is of another level. A delay tracking loop integrates the impulses and produces an error signal that adjusts the delay so the clock pulses will be synchronized with data pulses. A dead-time tau sub d is provided between data pulses of an interval tau sub p in the data pulse period tau. When synchronized, the average number of positive impulses integrated will equal the average number of negative impulses over the continuous stream of data pulses.

Aircraft control position indicator

An aircraft control position indicator was provided that displayed the degree of deflection of the primary flight control surfaces and the manner in which the aircraft responded. The display included a vertical elevator dot/bar graph meter display for indication whether the aircraft will pitch up or down, a horizontal aileron dot/bar graph meter display for indicating whether the aircraft will roll to the left or to the right, and a horizontal dot/bar graph meter display for indicating whether the aircraft will turn left or right. The vertical and horizontal display or displays intersect to form an up/down, left/right type display. Internal electronic display driver means received signals from transducers measuring the control surface deflections and determined the position of the meter indicators on each dot/bar graph meter display. The device allows readability at a glance, easy visual perception in sunlight or shade, near-zero lag in displaying flight control position, and is not affected by gravitational or centrifugal forces.

Arcsecond positions for milliarcsecond VLBI nuclei of extragalactic radio sources. IV - Seventeen sources

VLBI measurements of time delay and delay rate at 2.29 and 8.42 GHz on baselines of 10,000 km have been used to determine the positions of the milliarcsecond nuclei in 17 extragalactic radio sources with estimated accuracies of 0.1 to 0.3 arcsec. The observed sources are part of an all-sky VLBI catalog of milliarcsecond radio sources. In addition, slightly improved positions are presented for 101 sources originally reported by Morabito et al. (1983). Arcsecond positions have now been determined for 836 sources.

Adaptive force and position control of manipulators

Systematic methods for the design of adaptive force and position controllers for robot manipulators within the hybrid control architecture are presented. The force controller tracks the desired force setpoints while the position controller tracks the desired position trajectories. The present control schemes are computationally efficient and suitable for implementation in online control with high sampling rates.

Precise computer controlled positioning of robot end effectors using force sensors

A thorough study of combined position/force control using sensory feedback for a one-dimensional manipulator model, which may count for the spacecraft docking problem or be extended to the multi-joint robot manipulator problem, was performed. The additional degree of freedom introduced by the compliant force sensor is included in the system dynamics in the design of precise position control. State feedback based on the pole placement method and with integral control is used to design the position controller. A simple constant gain force controller is used as an example to illustrate the dependence of the stability and steady-state accuracy of the overall position/force control upon the design of the inner position controller. Supportive simulation results are also provided.

The propagation speed of a positive lightning return stroke

The first direct determination of the propagation speed of a lightning return stroke lowering positive charge to ground has been made. This stroke was the third of eight otherwise negative strokes in a triggered lightning flash initiated at the Kennedy Space Center, FL. Two independent optical systems, one photographic and the other photoelectric, yielded common recordings for the third and fourth strokes; the respective two-dimensional return stroke propagation speeds were 1.0 vs 0.93 x 10 to the 8th m/s for the positive (third) stroke and 1.0 vs 1.0 x 10 to the 8th m/s for the fourth stroke. Using fast electric-field data, the positive stroke peak current was estimated to be 21 kA. Photoelectric data only yielded propagation speeds of 1.4, 1.6, 1.2, 1.3, 1.0 and 0.90 x 10 to the 8th m/s for the first, second and fifth through eighth return strokes, respectively.

A five component electro-optical positioning system

The development of a five-component electrooptical positioning system for detecting the location of wind tunnel models within the test section is discussed. The system consists of three low power helium-neon lasers, five linear photodiode arrays, an assembly of optics that includes lenses and mirrors, and a signal conditioner. The system has been successfully installed and is currently in use at the 13-inch magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) at NASA Langley Research Center. Initially the system was developed as an auxiliary model position and attitude detecting system for that facility, but it has since been modified and interfaced with a PDP minicomputer to provide position feedback for the control loop.
