New microelectronic power amplifier

Integrated push-pull power amplifier fabricated on a chip of silicon has interdigitated power transistors and is hermetically encapsulated in a beryllia flat package. It provides current output greater than the nominal 10 amperes from an input current drive of 1 ampere.

Fluidic analog amplifier

Five-stage, high-gain, push-pull fluidic amplifier provides increased range and improved linearity. The fluidic amplifier was designed to operate in conjunction with a fluidic transducer.

Novel terminal strips for transformers

Spacing tinned terminal leads between two tapes of woven glass fiber that are sandwich-bonded with pliable epoxy adhesive alleviates problems of taped leads pulling away from the transformer and shorting due to crossover of wires. Individual leads may or may not be enclosed in glass-fiber sleeves.

Collodion technique of mirror cleaning

Cleaning method is modified by addition of a layer of cheesecloth between thin coatings of U.S.P. collodion. After drying, the collodion is peeled off by an even pull on the cheesecloth, leaving the mirror clean and ready for use.

Fluid slip ring transfers coolant to rotating equipment

Rotating fluid coupler, consisting of rotor and housing made of aluminum, that is concentric with electrical slip-ring assembly, transfers cooling fluid to instrumentation undergoing environmental tests on rotating platform. Rotating fluid coupler permits unlimited platform revolutions and eliminates danger of lines being pulled loose from supplies.

Metal-shearing energy absorber

Device, consisting of tongue of thin aluminum alloy strip, pull tab, slotted steel plate which serves as cutter, and steel buckle, absorbs mechanical energy when its ends are subjected to tensile loading. Device is applicable as auxiliary shock absorbing anchor for automobile and airplane safety belts.

Rising-plate rheometer

Technique eliminates hazards of handling propellants and permits determination of structure index of gel by remote control. Rheometer weighs cone of propellant gel which remains on a disc that has been slowly pulled out of the gel.

Vortex servovalve for fluidic or electrical input

Proportional-pressure control servovalve consisting of fluid amplifier bellows-driven jet-pipe and two vortex valves operating in push-pull, with a pair of bellows for pressure feedback is tolerant to comtaminant particles and meets minimum standby flow requirements for applications such as rocket thruster nozzles.

Perload indicating turnbuckle

Low cost, easily manufactured turnbuckle was developed for applying a predetermined load on strap assemblies. Unit consists of sleeve and nut assembled on turnbuckle that is pulled to predetermined load in tension test machine.

Electromagnetic rheometer

Force required to pull free a small circular plate imbedded in gel liquid is determined. Procedure for measuring the structure of a gel is given.

Lithium-doped solar cells for space use

Lithium doped p-n solar cells meet the basic requirements for space use. The efficiencies of the Lopex lithium cells which range from 10.5 to 12.8% are equal to or better than C.G. lithium cell and 10 ohms-cm n-p cell efficiencies. Reduction in the stresses introduced during boron diffusion has eliminated cell size restrictions and both 2 x 2 and 2 x 6 cm lithium doped cells have been fabricated. The Ti-Ag contacts which are tested 100% with a tape peel test, and pull tested and humidity tested on a sample basis are comparable to the Ti-Ag contacts on n-p cells.

Mascon distribution on the moon

Results concerning the distribution of mascons on the moon have been obtained from an analysis of Apollo 8, 10, 11, and 12 lunar orbit missions. It was concluded that the tugging and pulling by the moon on the orbit plane of the Apollo spacecraft yields qualitative information concerning the distribution of the mascons.

Rocket nozzle automatic release system

The function of the mechanism described is to automatically jettison a rocket nozzle element at the conclusion of boost in order to achieve a cruise mode nozzle configuration for the balance of powered flight. The boost nozzle is retained by latched pistons that are mechanically secured until released by chamber pressure, which simultaneously assumes retention of the nozzle by holding the primary piston in place. Upon attainment of cruise mode, the chamber pressure drops, allowing springs to overcome the primary piston force and pull the keeper ring forward to free the nozzle for jettison by motor exhaust.

Orbiting Frog Otolith experiment (OFO-A): Data reduction and control experimentation

The OFO-A mission was prepared as a part of a special program of vestibular physiology with the purpose of studying in which way the lack of the gravity pull will affect the functioning of that part of the labyrinth which controls balance. The gravitational components corresponded to the different head positions, namely, the gravity sensitive or positioning receptors. It is evident that in weightlessness the gravity sensitive receptors are deprived of their primary input.
