RF sheath and admittance characteristics of a spherical plasma probe.

Development of a radio-frequency sheath model for a spherical probe in a collisionless plasma. The method of solution is based on the quasi-static approximation and the electrostatic probe theory of Bernstein and Rabinowitz (1959). The resistive part of the admittance is ascribed to the sheath transit-time collisionless dissipation mechanism suggested by Mayer (1963) and developed by Gould (1964). Expressions are obtained for the effective sheath thickness and the equivalent resistance of the transit-time dissipation. The sheath model and, hence, the admittance are completely determined in terms of the bias potential, the probe radius, the plasma frequency, and the Debye length - i.e., there are no adjustable parameters in the proposed theory which are to be determined by experiment. The results obtained agree favorably with Cohen and Bekefi's (1971) experimental data on the conductance resonant frequency and the width of the conductance peak.

A proposed adjustable RF cable connector

In system that requires negligible loss, it may be necessary to adjust cable length to exact multiple of transmitted wavelength. Adjustable cable connector saves time and cost by eliminating need to add to or cut from cable. Device was especially designed for use with high frequencies. For particular application, connector of suitable dimensions should be used.

RF antenna-pattern visual aids for field use

Series of plots must be made of antenna pattern on polar-coordinate sheet depicting vertical planes. Separate sheets are plotted depicting antenna patterns in vertical plane at azimuth positions. After all polar plots are drawn, they are labeled according to their azimuthal positions. Transparencies are then stiffened with regular wire, cardboard, or molded plastic.

Parametric analysis of RF communications and tracking systems for manned space stations

System performance, system interface compatibility, and system management and operations are analyzed for external and internal communications provided by the modular space station. Mathematical models are utilized to evaluate performances of the various communication links between the MSS and the tracking and data relay satellites, the shuttle, and the ground stations. Communication control design requirements are determined from overall MSS control design and checkout requirements are developed in a related systems study. Parallel design efforts consider equipment configurations for the external communication assembly baseband and the internal communication assembly to accommodate signal transfer and control. The recommended baseline design considers also interfaces between equipment groups and the critical functional and signal characteristics of these interfaces. The data processing assembly has direct communication circuits to the external communication assembly and the control interface is provided via a digital data bus and a remote acquisition and control unit.

Mass quantity gauging by RF mode analysis

Work done to date is reported concerning Radio Frequency Mass Quantity Gauging. Experimental apparatus has been designed and tested which measures the resonant frequencies of a tank in the time domain. These frequencies correspond to the total mass of fluid within the tank. Experimental results are discussed for nitrogen and hydrogen in normal gravity both in the supercritical state and also in the two phase (liquid-gas) region. Theoretical discussions for more general cases are given.

Atmospheric effects on RF propagation due to turbulence in the Venus atmosphere

Although there have been several theoretical studies and predictions of the Venus atmospheric effects on the radio-frequency wave propagation, the limited experimental data of Venera 4, 5, 6 and 7 do not provide a consistent answer on how severe the turbulence effects could be especially near the Venus surface. In this paper the status of this problem is examined. Important theoretical results are presented. Some meaningful conclusions are drawn from the available experimental data as well as the theoretical analysis.

Calibration of a cylindrical RF capacitance probe

Ambient electron concentrations derived from observations with the Radio Astronomy Explorer 1 antenna capacitance probe have been compared with upper hybrid resonance measurements from the same spacecraft. From this comparison an empirical correction factor for the capacitance probe measurements has been derived. The differences between the two types of measurements is attributed to sheath effects.

Aeroflight communications and RF navaids

The principal operational requirements of the Space Shuttle Program concept of a low cost reliable and reusable orbital vehicle are outlined, and the aerial navigation and landing systems selected for the vehicle are discussed, along with their interfaces with the control and navigation systems. It is shown how the atmospheric flight systems were developed by adapting well-proven designs to a new application. Design improvements were held to a minimum, with no new concepts or extensive modifications required that might compromise previous system experience or qualification status. Newest concepts, such as digital designs, serial digital control, etc., as well as integration of software and hardware were accomplished to control and manage time critical processes, such as BIT and redundancy management. Appropriate planning and careful appraisals preceeded the selection of a system.-

Development of beam lead RF integrated circuits

This paper describes the design and development of a set of multifunction VHF/UHF integrated circuits aimed at providing a major improvement in spacecraft radio reliability through low stress operation and the processing of these circuits in beam-lead form. The methods evolved for the high frequency characterization of the devices are discussed together with the design of suitable test fixtures. Typical test results and the distribution of test parameters are presented. A unique carrier for beam-lead devices is described, and the need for such a device is discussed. The application of the carrier to device screening, burn-in and drift measurements is discussed together with the incentives for providing these capabilities. An overview of the integration of the devices into the spacecraft radio is given and candidate assembly processes are discussed. The technology impact of this approach upon future spacecraft radio systems is qualitatively examined.

Laboratory observations of RF emission at plasma electron frequency and n + 1/2 times the electron cyclotron frequency in electron beam-plasma and beam-beam interactions

Electric field emissions at frequencies of (n + 1/2) times the electron cyclotron frequency have been generated in a large-scale electron beam experiment in a vacuum facility. These emissions arise when a contrastreaming beam configuration exists, the primary beam consisting of monoenergetic electrons (50 eV to 5 keV) and the other beam of lower-energy backscattered secondary electrons. It is suggested that the same mechanism could also be the source of the observed 3/2 times the electron cyclotron frequency emissions at auroral latitudes. In the absence of the beam-beam instability, weak oscillations were observed at the plasma frequency. In the latter case no significant modifications of the primary beam velocity distribution occurred, and the beam configuration is adequately described by single-particle motion in the ambient magnetic field.
