Structural transition and anisotropic magnetism in disordered Zintl phase Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8

Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.

Insulating moiré homobilayers lack a threefold symmetric second-harmonic generation

Atoms within moiré bilayers relax in plane to minimize elastic energy; such relaxation brings their space group symmetries down to P1. Here, the ab initio second harmonic generation (SHG) of twisted and atomistically optimized hBN bilayers was determined at four twist angles (θ = 38.21°, 60.00°, 73.17°, and 98.21°) and for three displacements τ measured away from the ground state AA' configuration. All moiré bilayers have a P1 space symmetry after structural optimization. This situation is quite different to monolayers with hexagonal lattices, which retain a threefold symmetry. We point out that the actual symmetries of the SHG reported for hBN bilayers on two experimental works do not coincide with the sixfold symmetric theoretical profiles they provide [either sin 2 ⁡(3⁢Φ) or cos 2 ⁡(3⁢Φ)], and show that the intrinsic low structural symmetry of (atomically optimized) hBN bilayer moirés can in fact be read out from experimental SHG intensity profiles—which are tunable by θ and by the frequency of light ω: The SHG is most definitely not sixfold symmetric because moirés do not retain a threefold symmetry. Furthermore, an extrinsic twofold symmetry of the SHG emission is realized by tilting the pump by an angle α away from the 2D material's normal, regardless of θ and ω. Furthermore, the design of in-plane and ultrathin sources of SHG with low symmetry could be useful for the eventual creation of entanglement sources from 2D materials.

Stabilization of U 5 f 2 configuration in UTe 2 through U 6 d dimers in the presence of Te2 chains

We investigate the topological superconductor candidate UTe 2 using high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the U M 4 , 5 edges. We observe atomiclike low-energy excitations that support the correlated nature of this unconventional superconductor. These excitations originate from the U 5 f 2 configuration, which is unexpected since the short Te2-Te2 distances exclude Te2 being 2 − . By utilizing the photoionization cross-section dependence of the photoemission spectra in combination with band structure calculations, we infer that the stabilization of the U 5 f 2 configuration is due to the U 6 d bonding states in the U dimers acting as a charge reservoir. Our results emphasize that the description of the physical properties should commence with a 5 f 2 ansatz. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Anisotropic field-induced changes in the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2

UTe 2 is a newly discovered unconventional superconductor, where electron Cooper pairs combine into a spin-triplet ground state. We study the specific heat C( H,T ) of a high-quality UTe 2 single crystal, with a single anomaly at a high superconducting transition temperature T c = 2.1 K and a low residual Sommerfeld coefficient γ 0 . Applying magnetic fields up to 12 T along the crystallographic axes a, b , and c , we observe highly anisotropic behavior in γ 0 ( H ). Below 4 T, γ 0 ( H ) ≈ γ 0 + λi √H (i = a, b, c) , which is expected for an unconventional superconductor with nodes on the Fermi surface away from the direction of the magnetic field. At 4 T ( a and b axes) and 5.5 T ( c axis), distinctive changes in the behavior of γ 0 (H) suggest that a stable low-field ground state begins to evolve above 4 T. The data analysis indicates that the nodes are located near the a–b plane, with possible order parameters d B2u + iεd B1u or d B2u + iεd Au . Our findings support B 2u as the primary superconducting order parameter in UTe 2 .

First measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions using an accelerator neutrino beam

We report the first measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions at the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector using the T2K neutrino beam, which has a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV. A total of 30 neutral-current quasielasticlike event candidates were selected from T2K data corresponding to an exposure of 1.76 × 10 20 protons on target. The 𝛾 ray signals resulting from neutron captures were identified using a neural network. The flux-averaged mean neutron capture multiplicity was measured to be 1.37 ± 0.33 (stat.)$^{+0.17}_{−0.27}$ (syst.), which is compatible within 2.3 sigma than predictions obtained using our nominal simulation. We discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainty in the prediction and demonstrate that a significant portion of this discrepancy arises from the modeling of hadron-nucleus interactions in the detector medium.

Search for neutron decay into an antineutrino and a neutral kaon in 0.401 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for bound neutron decay via 𝑛 → $\bar{𝜈}$ +𝐾 0 predicted by the grand unified theories in 0.401 Mton·years exposure of all pure water phases in the Super-Kamiokande detector. About 4.4 times more data than in the previous search have been analyzed by a new method including a spectrum fit to kaon invariant mass distributions. No significant data excess has been observed in the signal regions. As a result of this analysis, we set a lower limit of 7.8 × 10 32 years on the neutron lifetime at a 90% confidence level.

Integrated Models for Electrical Distribution Network Planning and District-Scale Building Energy Use

The increase of greenhouse emissions caused by a rise in global energy consumption is pushing the scientific community to develop tools that address key environmental, techno-economic and social issues. One specific area of focus is to create tools that enable the design of high-performance energy districts, including grid-interactive efficient buildings and electrical distribution infrastructure. This paper outlines the approach of integrating a synthetic distribution network tool (RNM-US) with URBANopt™, a modular and customizable software development kit for thermal and electrical modelling of buildings and energy systems at a district scale. First, we describe the algorithms implemented to integrate RNM-US with URBANopt to automatically generate the distribution network for the district considered. Following, we present a case study for the potential uses of the RNM-US integrations with URBANopt, highlighting the capabilities for economic and technical analysis of the distribution network built in relation to the electricity needs of the modelled buildings.
