Electric-field-assisted-sintering of rare-earth oxide dispersion strengthened Fe-Cr-Mo alloys

Oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys are widely recognized for their exceptional high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and radiation tolerance, making them indispensable for advanced nuclear reactors, aerospace, and energy systems. Achieving a fine and stable dispersion of oxide nanoparticles is critical, as these particles act as strong barriers to dislocation motion and effective sinks for irradiation-induced defects, ensuring structural integrity under extreme conditions. Here, in this study, Fe–Cr–Mo-based ODS alloys were fabricated via mechanical alloying and consolidated using electric-field-assisted sintering (EFAS) with additions of Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , and CeO 2 . EFAS processing produced ultrafine-grained microstructures (average grain size <1 μm) with uniformly distributed oxide clusters (2–4 nm). Atom probe tomography revealed that La 2 O 3 -containing alloys exhibited the highest nanoparticle number density, resulting in superior tensile strength compared to yttria- and ceria-bearing counterparts. The combined effect of grain refinement and rare-earth oxide dispersion significantly enhanced mechanical performance, demonstrating the potential of EFAS for developing high-strength ferritic alloys for demanding environments such as nuclear systems.

Cooling-Rate-Driven Polymorphism and Vacancy Ordering in Ce 2 MnGe 6 Intergrowth Phases

Intergrowth phases in intermetallic systems provide a compelling framework for investigating structure–property relationships as a function of crystallographic subunit stacking. In this study, we examine the influence of Mn vacancy ordering on subunit stacking and reassign the structure of Ce 2 MnGe 6 to a monoclinic C2/m space group (a = 8.3486(17) Å, b = 8.6181(18) Å, c = 10.778(2) Å, β = 101.17(2)°). Additionally, we report a monoclinic polymorph of the Ln 2 MGe 6 family characterized as a tripled c-axis supercell derivative of monoclinic Ce 2 MnGe 6 , 3×c-Ce 2 MnGe 6 (a = 8.3482(16) Å, b = 8.6179(18) Å, c = 31.813(6) Å, β = 93.763(7)°). This polymorph emerges under rapid cooling conditions during the synthesis and offers insight into the structural relationship between the orthorhombic and monoclinic variants of the Ln 2 MGe 6 phases. Notably, the supercell form of Ce 2 MnGe 6 (3×c-Ce 2 MnGe 6 ) exhibits increased electrical resistivity and suggests enhanced Zintl-like behavior, potentially indicating greater thermodynamic stability relative to the parent monoclinic phase.

Crystal Structure and Atomic Vacancy Optimized Thermoelectric Properties in Gadolinium Selenides

Thermoelectric materials enable the energy conversion of waste heat into electricity, helpful to relieve global energy crisis. Here, we report a systematic investigation on high-temperature thermoelectric gadolinium selenides, cubic Gd 3-x Se 4 (x = 0.16, 0.21 and 0.25) and orthorhombic Gd 2 Se 3-y (y = 0.02, 0.06 and 0.08). High energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction and total scattering have been used to investigate the crystallographic and local structures. Atomic-scale clusters of Gd vacancy in the cubic phase are observed by employing the reverse Monte Carlo simulation. For cubic Gd 3-x Se 4 , adjusting Gd vacancy triggers the effect of multiple conduction bands, confirmed by the increase in effective masses and theoretical calculations. A reasonable peak zT value of 0.27 is achieved at 850 K for Gd 3-x Se 4 (x = 0.16). On the other hand, tuning Se vacancy enables the optimization of electron concentration for the orthorhombic Gd 2 Se 3-y . More significantly, its low deformation potential (Ξ = 12eV) gives rise to enhanced electron mobility and higher peak zT value of 0.54 at 850 K for Gd 2 Se 3-y (y = 0.02). Intriguingly, a higher zT of 1.2 at 1200 K is reasonably predicted by quality factor analysis. Finally, this work extends the scope of high-temperature thermoelectric materials and facilitates the exploration of novel high-temperature thermoelectric materials

Linker Contribution toward Stability of Metal–Organic Frameworks under Ionizing Radiation

Here, the effects of radiation on a series of UiO derivative metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that contain the same zirconium hexamer node and similar organic linkers, UiO-66, UiO-66–NH 2 , UiO-66–OH, and NU-403, were examined using γ-rays and 5 MeV He ions. UiO-66, UiO-66–NH2, and UiO-66–OH contain aromatic linkers and are significantly more stable to radiation than NU-403. Of these, UiO-66 is the most radiation resistant, displaying crystalline features up to 47 MGy of He-ion irradiation. MOFs containing aromatic linkers functionalized by electron-donating groups, UiO-66–NH 2 and UiO-66–OH, retained crystalline features up to 19 MGy. NU-403 contains aliphatic rings and is the least radiation-resistant MOF studied here. NU-403 exhibits small changes in infrared spectra upon 3 MGy of γ-irradiation and significant damage upon 10 MGy of He-ion irradiation. Diffraction data revealed radiation-induced defect formation. Structural locations of radiation-induced breakdown were interrogated experimentally and via density functional theory. The results indicated changes in the carboxylate (-OCO) of the linker and μ 3 -OH vibrational modes, suggesting that introduction of an aliphatic linker into the MOF renders the connection between the linker and metal node most susceptible to radiation damage. This study reveals that the choice of the linker is crucial in designing a radiation-resistant MOF.

Fundamental Thermodynamic, Kinetic, and Mechanical Properties of Lithium and Its Alloys

Lithium alloying reactions are beneficial in promoting uniform plating and stripping of lithium metal in all-solid-state batteries. First-principles calculations are performed to predict thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanical properties of lithium and several important Li–M alloys (M = Mg, Ag, Zn, Al, Ga, In, Sn, Sb, and Bi). While the Li–Mg binary system forms a solid solution, most other lithium–metal alloys prefer stoichiometric intermetallic compounds with common local motifs that enable fast Li diffusion. Lithium and Li-rich alloys exhibit an unusually flat energy landscape along paths that connect BCC to close-packed structures like FCC and HCP, with important implications for mechanical properties. Very low migration barriers for Li diffusion that rival those of superion conductors are predicted, both in pure Li and in Li–M intermetallics. However, vacancy concentration, which is crucial for substitutional diffusion, is predicted to be low in metallic Li and most Li–M intermetallics. Compounds such as B32 LiAl and LiGa as well as D0 3 Li 3 Sb and Li 3 Bi exhibit structural vacancies at higher ends of their voltage windows, which together with low migration barriers leads to exceptionally high Li mobilities. In the Li–Mg solid solution, the addition of Mg is found to decrease the vacancy tracer diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude.

Direct Mechanochemical Synthesis, Phase Stability, and Electrochemical Performance of α-NaFeO 2

To better understand polymorph control in transition metal oxides, the mechanochemical synthesis of NaFeO 2 was explored. In this paper, we report the direct synthesis of α-NaFeO 2 through a mechanochemical process. By milling Na 2 O 2 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 for 5 h, α-NaFeO 2 was prepared without high-temperature annealing needed in other synthesis methods. While investigating the mechanochemical synthesis, it was observed that changing the starting precursors and mass of precursors affects the resulting NaFeO 2 structure. Density functional theory calculations on the phase stability of NaFeO 2 phases show that the α phase is stabilized over the β phase in oxidizing environments, which is provided by the oxygen-rich reaction between Na 2 O 2 and Fe 2 O 3 . This provides a possible route to understanding polymorph control in NaFeO 2 . Annealing the as-milled α-NaFeO 2 at 700 °C has resulted in increased crystallinity and structural changes that improved electrochemical performance in terms of capacity over the as-milled sample.

LaMnO 3 Dopants for Efficient Thermochemical Water Splitting Identified by Density Functional Theory Calculations

While ceria is the standard material for two-step water splitting, perovskites are emerging as viable alternatives. In this work, based on the orthorhombic LaMnO 3 supercell, we substitute Li Na K Rb Mg Ca Sr Ba on the A-sites (La sites) and Al Ga In Mg Zn on the B-sites (Mn sites) at a concentration of 37.5%. The range of temperature and oxygen partial pressure at which each composition is stable is predicted. For compositions that are stable in relevant temperature and pressure ranges, the oxygen vacancy formation energies are determined for all of the oxygen vacancy site positions available in the computational supercell. Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba A-site-substituted LaMnO 3 and Al and In B-site-substituted LaMnO 3 meet these two criteria for candidates in solar-thermal water splitting applications. Finally, oxygen vacancy formation energy can also be controlled by adjusting the doping strategy.

Stacking Faults and Topological Properties in MnBi 2 Te 4 : Reconciling Gapped and Gapless States

Despite theoretical predictions of a gapped surface state for the magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT), there has been a series of experimental evidence pointing toward gapless states. Here, we theoretically explore how stacking faults could influence the topological characteristics of MBT. We envisage a scenario that a stacking fault exists at the surface of MBT, causing the uppermost layer to deviate from the ground state and its interlayer separation to be expanded. This stacking fault with modulated interlayer couplings hosts a nearly gapless state within the topmost layer due to charge redistribution as the outermost layer recedes. Furthermore, we find evidence of spin-momentum locking and preservation of weak band inversion in the gapless surface state, suggesting the nontrivial topological surface states in the presence of the stacking fault. In conclusion, our findings provide a plausible elucidation to the long-standing conundrum of reconciling the observation of gapped and gapless states on MBT surfaces.

Graphene Activated Magnesium Diboride for Moderate Pressure and Temperature Hydrogenation to Magnesium Borohydride

The hydrogenation conditions of magnesium diboride (MgB2) to magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH4)2) can be significantly enhanced through the discovery of improved modifiers. This study demonstrates that the modification of MgB2 by mechanical milling with graphene nanoplatelets significantly reduces the hydrogenation conditions of MgB2 from 900 bar and 400 degrees C for pure MgB2 to 400 bar and 300 degrees C while achieving 77% conversion to Mg(BH4)2. The introduction of the graphene additives coupled with milling leads to a reduction of the temperature and pressure required for bulk hydrogenation by 100 degrees C and 500 bar, respectively, from that of pure MgB2. The identification of graphene additives that drastically improve the hydrogenation conditions of MgB2 represents an important step toward improving hydrogen uptake kinetics to Mg(BH4)2.

CeTi 2 O 6 —A Promising Oxide for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

A large entropy of reduction is crucial in achieving materials capable of high-efficiency solar thermochemical hydrogen (STCH) production through two-step thermochemical water splitting cycles. We have recently demonstrated that the onsite electronic entropy of reduction attains an extreme value of 4.26 kB at 1500 K in Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox reactions, which explains the high performance and uniqueness of CeO 2 as an archetypal STCH material. However, ceria requires high temperatures (T > 1500 °C) to achieve a reasonable reduction extent because of its large reduction enthalpy, which is a major obstacle in practical applications. Therefore, new materials with a large entropy of reduction and lower reduction enthalpy are required. Here, we perform a systematic screening to search for Ce 4+ -based oxides which possess thermodynamics superior to CeO 2 for STCH production. We first search the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and literature for Ce 4+ -based oxides and subsequently use density functional theory to compute their reduction enthalpies (i.e., oxygen vacancy formation energies). Here, we find that CeTi 2 O 6 with the brannerite structure is the most promising candidate for STCH because it possesses three essential characteristics of an STCH material: (i) a smaller reduction enthalpy compared to ceria yet large enough to split water, (ii) a high thermal stability, as reported experimentally, and (iii) a large entropy of reduction associated with Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox. Our proposed design strategy suggests that further exploration of Ce 4+ oxides for STCH production is warranted.

Telecom-Wavelength Single-Photon Emitters in Multilayer InSe

The development of robust and efficient single-photon emitters (SPEs) at telecom wavelengths is critical for advancements in quantum information science. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have recently emerged as promising sources for SPEs, owing to their high photon extraction efficiency, facile coupling to external fields, and seamless integration into photonic circuits. In this study, we demonstrate the creation of SPEs emitting in the 1000–1550 nm near-infrared range by coupling 2D indium selenide (InSe) with strain-inducing nanopillar arrays. The emission wavelength exhibits a strong dependence on the number of layers. Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiments conducted at 10 K reveal clear photon antibunching, confirming the single-photon nature of the emissions. In conclusion, density-functional-theory calculations and scanning-tunneling-microscopy analyses provide insights into the electronic structures and defect states, elucidating the origins of the SPEs.
