Develop a Fast Analysis Solver for Welding Sequence Optimization

During the shipbuilding manufacturing process, materials are exposed to significant stresses, as induced both thermally and mechanically, that alter the intended design and significantly affect the production schedule, labor hours (fitting, welding, rework, etc.), and material structural performance. The type and magnitude of deformation of a given structure depends on many factors such as the material, thickness and quality of components, the process heat input, preheat and inter-pass temperatures, type and size of welds, welding sequence and direction, location, sequence, and degree of fixturing. Numerical simulations using finite element analysis (FEA) have long been used to analyze welding-induced structural distortion. For large assemblies, transient thermal elastic-plastic analysis (TEPA) can take days or weeks to run, and optimization of welding sequence is not feasible. Simplified analysis methods were developed to reduce computational time. However, it is challenging to use these techniques to fully optimize welding sequencing because of their applied simplifications in modeling weld details. A fast analysis solver that could be used by the shipbuilding industry is being developed for optimizing welding sequences by taking full advantage of modern GPU-based HPC hardware and incorporating patented acceleration schemes. The accelerated processing factors are up to 2200 times greater for large, multi-pass welded structures.

Ionic Liquid-Mediated Interfacial Polymerization for Fabrication of Reverse Osmosis Membranes

This study revealed the effects of incorporating ionic liquid (IL) molecules: 1-ethyl, 1-butyl, and 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chlorides with different alkyl chain lengths, in interfacial polymerization (IP) on the structure and property (i.e., permeate-flux and salt rejection ratio) relationships of resulting RO membranes. The IL additive was added in the aqueous meta-phenylene diamine (MPD; 0.1% w/v) phase, which was subsequently reacted with trimesoyl chloride (TMC; 0.004% w/v) in the hexane phase to produce polyamide (PA) barrier layer. The structure of resulting free-standing PA thin films was characterized by grazing incidence wide-angle X-rays scattering (GIWAXS), which results were correlated with the performance of thin-film composite RO membranes having PA barrier layers prepared under the same IP conditions. Additionally, the membrane surface properties were characterized by zeta potential and water contact angle measurements. It was found that the membrane prepared by the longer chain IL molecule generally showed lower salt rejection ratio and higher permeation flux, possibly due to the inclusion of IL molecules in the PA scaffold. This hypothesis was supported by the GIWAXS results, where a self-assembled surfactant-like structure formed by IL with the longest aliphatic chain length was detected.

Flexible and high-performance electrochromic devices enabled by self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /MXene heterostructures

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising electrochromic (EC) materials for applications such as smart windows and displays, yet the challenge still exists to achieve good flexibility, high coloration efficiency and fast response simultaneously. MXenes (e.g. Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and their derived TMOs (e.g. 2D TiO 2 ) are good candidates for high-performance and flexible EC devices because of their 2D nature and the possibility of assembling them into loosely networked structures. Here we demonstrate flexible, fast, and high-coloration-efficiency EC devices based on self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures, with the Ti 3 C 2 T x layer as the transparent electrode, and the 2D TiO 2 layer as the EC layer. Benefiting from the well-balanced porosity and connectivity of these assembled nanometer-thick heterostructures, they present fast and efficient ion and electron transport, as well as superior mechanical and electrochemical stability. We further demonstrate large-area flexible devices which could potentially be integrated onto curved and flexible surfaces for future ubiquitous electronics.

RNA nanotechnology to build a dodecahedral genome of single-stranded RNA virus

The quest for artificial RNA viral complexes with authentic structure while being non-replicative is on its way for the development of viral vaccines. RNA viruses contain capsid proteins that interact with the genome during morphogenesis. The sequence and properties of the protein and genome determine the structure of the virus. For example, the Pariacoto virus ssRNA genome assembles into a dodecahedron. Virus-inspired nanotechnology has progressed remarkably due to the unique structural and functional properties of viruses, which can inspire the design of novel nanomaterials. RNA is a programmable biopolymer able to self-assemble sophisticated 3D structures with rich functionalities. RNA dodecahedrons mimicking the Pariacoto virus quasi-icosahedral genome structures were constructed from both native and 2'-F modified RNA oligos. The RNA dodecahedron easily self-assembled using the stable pRNA three-way junction of bacteriophage phi29 as building blocks. The RNA dodecahedron cage was further characterized by cryo-electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, confirming the spontaneous and homogenous formation of the RNA cage. The reported RNA dodecahedron cage will likely provide further studies on the mechanisms of interaction of the capsid protein with the viral genome while providing a template for further construction of the viral RNA scaffold to add capsid proteins for the assembly of the viral nucleocapsid as a model. Understanding the self-assembly and RNA folding of this RNA cage may offer new insights into the 3D organization of viral RNA genomes. Finally, the reported RNA cage also has the potential to be explored as a novel virus-inspired nanocarrier.

Tracking Molecular Transport Across Oil/Aqueous Interfaces: Insight into “Antagonistic” Binding in Solvent Extraction

Liquid/liquid (L/L) interfaces play a key, yet poorly understood, role in a range of complex chemical phenomena where time-evolving interfacial structures and transient supramolecular assemblies act as gatekeepers to function. Here, for this study, we employ surface-specific vibrational sum frequency generation combined with neutron and X-ray scattering methods to track the transport of dioctyl phosphoric acid (DOP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) ligands used in solvent extraction at buried oil/aqueous interfaces away from equilibrium. Our results show evidence for a dynamic interfacial restructuring at low ligand concentrations in contrast to expectation. These time-varying interfaces arise from the transport of sparingly soluble interfacial ligands into the neighboring aqueous phase. These results support a proposed “antagonistic” role of ligand complexation in the aqueous phase that could serve as a holdback mechanism in kinetic liquid extractions. These findings provide new insights into interfacially controlled chemical transport at L/L interfaces and how these interfaces vary chemically, structurally, and temporally in a concentration-dependent manner and present potential avenues to design selective kinetic separations.

Non-Reciprocity, Metastability, and Dynamic Reconfiguration in Co-Assembly of Active and Passive Particles

Living organisms often exhibit non-reciprocal interactions where the forces acting on the objects are not equal in magnitude or opposite in direction. The combination of reciprocal and non-reciprocal interactions between synthetic building blocks remains largely unexplored. Here, out-of-equilibrium assemblies of non-motile isotropic passive and metal-patched motile active particles are formed by overlapping bulk interactions with directed self-propulsion. An external alternating current (AC) electric field generates concurrent dipolar and induced-charge electrophoretic forces between the particles which are evaluated using microscopy. The interaction force measurements allow to determine the degree of reciprocity in interactions, which is tunable by designing the active particle and its trajectory. While linearly-propelled active particles evade assembly with passive particles, helically propelled active particles form active-passive clusters with dynamic reconfiguration and long-lived metastability. Large clusters display programmable fluctuations and reconfigurability by controlling the fraction of active particles. The study establishes principles of integrating reciprocal and non-reciprocal interactions in guided colloidal assembly of reconfigurable metastable structures.

Mechanism of endosomal escape by p H -responsive nucleic-acid vectors

Successful intracellular delivery of nucleic acids (NAs) hinges on many factors, one of them being NAs’ efficacious escape from endosomes. As competent NA vectors, pH-responsive gemini surfactants (GSs) might achieve high efficacy by facilitating endosomal escape. However, how the GSs assist the escape remains debated as many proposed mechanisms still lack experimental support, which hinders replication and further improvement of the efficient delivery. Here, via UV, fluorescence spectroscopy, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we examined a pH-responsive GS's and a pH-unresponsive GS's capabilities to compact DNA and withstand binding competition, and their interactions with model endosomal and lysosomal membranes, at varied pHs. Acidification-driven enhancement of DNA-compaction capability and of stability against binding competition were found specific to the pH-responsive GS. Alongside the pH-responsive GS's structural perturbation to the membranes as observed with SANS, the features suggest that pH-responsive GSs facilitate endosomal escape by releasing excess GS molecules from DNA-GS complexes upon acidification in endosome maturation, with the released GS molecules disrupting endosomal and lysosomal membranes and thereby assisting the escape. Here a general design principle for NA vectors is proposed on the basis of this experimental finding.

Designed and biologically active protein lattices

Versatile methods to organize proteins in space are required to enable complex biomaterials, engineered biomolecular scaffolds, cell-free biology, and hybrid nanoscale systems. Here, we demonstrate how the tailored encapsulation of proteins in DNA-based voxels can be combined with programmable assembly that directs these voxels into biologically functional protein arrays with prescribed and ordered two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) organizations. We apply the presented concept to ferritin, an iron storage protein, and its iron-free analog, apoferritin, in order to form single-layers, double-layers, as well as several types of 3D protein lattices. Our study demonstrates that internal voxel design and inter-voxel encoding can be effectively employed to create protein lattices with designed organization, as confirmed by in situ X-ray scattering and cryo-electron microscopy 3D imaging. The assembled protein arrays maintain structural stability and biological activity in environments relevant for protein functionality. The framework design of the arrays then allows small molecules to access the ferritins and their iron cores and convert them into apoferritin arrays through the release of iron ions. The presented study introduces a platform approach for creating bio-active protein-containing ordered nanomaterials with desired 2D and 3D organizations.

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Monodisperse Graphene Nanoribbons: Access to Submicron Architectures with Long-Range Order and Uniform Orientation

Fabricating organic semiconducting materials into large-scale well-organized architectures is critical for building high performance molecular electronics. While graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) hold enormous promise for various device applications, their assembly into a well-structured monolayer or multilayer architecture poses a substantial challenge. Here we report the preparation of length-defined monodisperse GNRs via the integrated iterative binomial synthesis (IIBS) strategy and their self-assembly into submicron-architectures with long-range order, uniform orientation as well as regular layers. Further, the use of short alkyl side chains benefits forming stable multi-layers through interlocking structures. By changing the length and backbone shapes of these monodisperse GNRs, various three-dimensional assemblies including multilayer stripes, monolayer stripes, and nanowires, can be achieved, leading to different photophysical properties and band gaps. The discovery of these intriguing self-assembly behaviors of length-defined GNRs is expected to open the door for various future applications.

Casings for lithium ion batteries are provided that include a container or assembly that defines a base, side walls and a top or lid, and a vent structure associated with the container or assembly. A flame arrestor may be positioned in proximity to the vent structure. The lithium ion battery may also include a pressure disconnect device associated with the casing. The pressure disconnect device may include a deflectable dome-based activation mechanism, and the deflectable dome-based activation mechanism may be configured and dimensioned to prevent burn through, e.g., by increasing the mass of the dome-based activation mechanism, adding material (e.g., foil) to the dome-based activation mechanism, and combinations thereof. Burn through may also be avoided, at least in part, based on the speed at which the dome-based activation mechanism responds at a target trigger pressure.

Structured liquid-based reconfigurable all-liquid optical fibers

Quartz optical fibers are brittle, difficult to repair, and lack reconfigurability, limiting their adaptability in underwater communication. To overcome these impediments, here we show reconfigurable all-liquid optical fibers (RAOFs) produced by structured liquid, tuned by the interfacial assembly and jamming of nanoparticle surfactants at the water-oil interface (interfacial tension <10 mN m -1 , refractive index contrast of 0.083). These RAOFs combine the structural stability of the interfacial assemblies with the inherent flexibility of liquids. They support real-time communication on an Ethernet platform (up to 1 Gbps), providing a practical alternative to conventional optical fibers for optical interconnects. Their liquid nature enables broken fibers to be repaired rapidly by a coalescence process. Their softness affords on-demand reconfigurability that enables in-situ fabrication of reconfigurable optical fibers and dynamic manipulation of signal transmission. RAOFs provide a versatile, self-healing, and resilient solution for optical communication systems in dynamic environments.

Motion of Molecules in Supramolecular Scaffolds Enhances Bone Regeneration

The regeneration of human tissues is a great scientific challenge and a critical factor to achieve a long healthspan and prevent disabilities due to injury or disease. Materials chemistry can contribute to this goal with the development of bioactive supramolecular systems that can signal cells for regeneration. Recent work in our laboratory using in vivo models of spinal cord injury and cartilage regeneration has demonstrated that the motion of bioactive molecules in supramolecular scaffolds enhances receptor signaling. We report here on a novel molecular strategy to control supramolecular motion in filamentous assemblies using bone regeneration as a functional target. The supramolecular assemblies are composed of monomers that arrange, by design, with either parallel or antiparallel β-sheets, and some of them contain a terminal peptide sequence that binds BMP-2. We found that parallel β-sheet supramolecular assemblies promote greater osteogenic differentiation of progenitor cells in vitro relative to antiparallel assemblies, as well as superior quality of newly regenerated bone in a rat model of spinal fusion. Furthermore, these assemblies drastically reduce the dangerous supraphysiological dose of BMP-2 used clinically for spinal fusion. Here, we attribute the enhanced bioactivity to the weaker nature of hydrogen bonds in parallel relative to antiparallel β-sheet assemblies, which in turn allows greater supramolecular motion and cell signaling of the growth factor-binding molecules.

Fabrication of THz corrugated wakefield structure and its high power test

We present overall process for developing terahertz (THz) corrugated structure and its beam-based measurement results. 0.2-THz corrugated structures were fabricated by die stamping method as the first step demonstration towards GW THz radiation source and GV/m THz wakefield accelerator. 150-μm thick disks were produced from an OFHC (C10100) foil by stamping. Two types of disks were stacked alternately to form 46 mm structure with ~ 170 corrugations. Custom assembly was designed to provide diffusion bonding with a high precision alignment of disks. The compliance of the fabricated structure have been verified through beam-based wakefield measurement at Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility. Nanoparticle surfactants and structured liquids

Materials are usually classified as solids or liquids, based on their structural stability, dynamic response, and rheological properties. Structured liquid, a new state of matter, has attracted much attention in recent years. Different with either solid or liquid, structured liquid combines the desirable characteristics of fluids with the structural stability of a solid, showing a myriad of potential applications in encapsulation, biphasic reactors, and programmable liquid constructs. Here, a brief review is given, by introducing a new strategy to structure liquids based on the formation, assembly, and jamming of nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid-liquid interfaces. Furthermore, the interfacial packing of the NPSs can be effectively manipulated using external triggers, endowing the structured liquids with adaptiveness and responsiveness to changes in their external environment.

Sulfur Conversion to Donor‐Acceptor Ladder Polymer Networks through Mechanochemical Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction

The development of synthetic methods capable of converting elemental sulfur into conjugated porous sulfur‐rich polymers remains a great challenge, although direct utilization of this readily available feedstock can significantly enrich its uses and circumvent environmental problems during sulfur storage. Here, we report herein mechanochemical (MC) nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) that enables sulfur conversion into thianthrene‐bridged porous ladder polymer networks with dense donor‐acceptor (D−A) molecular junctions. We demonstrate that the key lies in the generation of bent thianthrene units through a solid‐state ball‐milling condensation reaction between 1,2‐dihaloarenes and elemental sulfur. We also show that the assembling of D−A structural motifs into porous networks affords efficient visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with water (H 2 O) vapor, in the absence of any additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. Exceptional photoinduced charge separation along with boosted exciton dissociation results in a high‐performance of carbon monoxide (CO) production rate of 306.1 μmol g −1 h −1 with near 100 % CO selectivity, which is accompanied by H 2 O oxidation to O 2 , as confirmed by both experimental and theoretical results. We anticipate this novel MC S N Ar approach will advance processing techniques for direct sulfur utilization and facilitate new possibilities for the synthesis of D−A ladder polymer networks with promising potential in photocatalysis.
