Orbital and spin character of doped carriers in infinite-layer nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2 has drawn significant attention in the field. A key open question regards the evolution of the electronic structure with respect to hole doping. Here we exploit x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the doping-dependent electronic structure of Nd1-xSrxNiO2. Upon doping, a high-energy feature in Ni L3-edge XAS develops in addition to the main absorption peak, while XAS at the O K-, Nd M3- and Nd M5-edge exhibits a much weaker response. This implies that doped holes are mainly introduced into Ni 3d states. By comparing our data to atomic multiplet calculations including D4h crystal field, the doping-induced feature in Ni L3-edge XAS is consistent with a d8 spin-singlet state in which doped holes reside in the 3dx2-y2 orbitals. This is further supported by the softening of RIXS orbital excitations due to doping, corroborating with the Fermi level shift associated with increasing holes in the Ni 3dx2-y2 orbital.

Enhanced magnetization in proton irradiated Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 van der Waals crystals

van der Waals (vdW) engineering of magnetism is a topic of increasing research interest in the community at present. We study themagnetic properties of quasi-two-dimensional layered vdW Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 (MST) crystals upon proton irradiation as a function of fluences of 1 × 10 15 , 5 ×10 15 , 1 × 10 16 , and 1 × 10 18 H⁺/cm 2 . We find that the magnetization is significantly enhanced by 53% and 37% in the ferrimagnetic phase (at 50 K) when the MST crystal was irradiated with the proton fluence of 5 ×10 15 , both in ab and c planes, respectively. The ferrimagnetic ordering temperature and magnetic anisotropy are retained even after proton irradiation. From the fluence dependence of magnetization, electron paramagnetic resonance spectral parameters (g-value and signal width), and Raman data, we show that the magnetic exchange interactions (Mn–Te–Mn) are significantly modified at this fluence. This work shows that it is possible to employ protonirradiation in tuning the magnetic properties of vdW crystals and provide many opportunities to design desired magnetic phases.

Zero-field spin resonance in graphene with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling

In this work we investigate collective spin excitations in graphene with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the Rashba and valley-Zeeman types, as it is the case, e.g., for graphene on transition-metal-dichalcogenide substrates. It is shown that, even in the absence of an external magnetic field, such a system supports collective spin modes, which correspond to coupled oscillations of the uniform and valley-staggered magnetizations. These modes can be detected via both zero-field electron spin resonance (ESR) and zero-field electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR), with EDSR response arising solely due to Rashba SOC. We analyze the effect of electron-electron interaction within the Fermi-liquid kinetic equation and show that the interaction splits both the ESR and EDSR peaks into two. The magnitude of splitting and the relative weights of the resonances can be used to extract the spin-orbit coupling constants and many-body interaction parameters that may not be accessible by other methods.

Paramagnon dispersion and damping in doped Na x Ca 2 – x CuO 2 Cl 2

Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we measure the paramagnon dispersion and damping of undoped, antiferromagnetic Ca 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 as well as doped, superconducting Na x Ca 2–x CuO 2 Cl 2 . Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary X=(0.5, 0) confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature T c . Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon doping there is a slight softening at (0.25,0) but not at the zone boundary X. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon doping, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at X, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates.

Simultaneous Brillouin and piezoelectric coupling to a high-frequency bulk acoustic resonator

Bulk acoustic resonators support robust, long-lived mechanical modes, capable of coupling to various quantum systems. In separate works, such devices have achieved strong coupling to both superconducting qubits, via piezoelectricity, and optical cavities, via Brillouin interactions. In this work, we present a hybrid microwave–optical platform capable of coupling to bulk acoustic waves through cavity-enhanced piezoelectric and photoelastic interactions. The modular, tunable system achieves fully resonant and well-mode-matched interactions among a 3D microwave cavity, a high-frequency bulk acoustic resonator, and a Fabry–Perot cavity. We realize this piezo–Brillouin interaction in x-cut quartz, demonstrating the potential for strong optomechanical interactions and high cooperativity using optical cavity enhancement. We further show how this device functions as a bidirectional electro–opto–mechanical transducer, with transduction efficiency exceeding 10 − <#comment/> 8 , and a feasible path towards unity conversion efficiency. The high optical sensitivity and ability to apply a large resonant microwave field in this system also offers a tool for probing anomalous electromechanical couplings, which we demonstrate by investigating (nominally centrosymmetric) C a F 2 and revealing a parasitic piezoelectricity of 83 am/V. Such studies are an important topic for emerging quantum technologies, and highlight the versatility of this hybrid platform.

Single-ion properties of the transverse-field Ising model material CoNb 2 O 6

We report CoNb 2 O 6 is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co 2+ acts as a pseudospin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb 2 O 6 is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian. These terms are expected to be controlled in part by single-ion physics, namely the wave function for the pseudospin-1/2 angular momentum doublet. Here, we present the results of both inelastic neutron scattering measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on CoNb 2 O 6 , which elucidate the single-ion physics of Co 2+ in CoNb 2 O 6 for the first time. We find that the system is well-described by an intermediate spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonian, and the ground state is a well-isolated Kramers doublet with an anisotropic g tensor. We provide the approximate wave functions for this doublet, which we expect will be useful in theoretical investigations of the anisotropic exchange interactions.

Principles of two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy of collective excitations: The case of Josephson plasmons in layered superconductors

Two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS), a terahertz analog of nuclear magnetic resonance, is a new technique poised to address many open questions in complex condensed matter systems. The conventional theoretical framework used ubiquitously for interpreting multidimensional spectra of discrete quantum level systems is, however, insufficient for the continua of collective excitations in strongly correlated materials. Here, in this work, we develop a theory for 2DTS of a model collective excitation, the Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors. Starting from a mean-field approach at temperatures well below the superconducting phase transition, we obtain expressions for the multidimensional nonlinear responses that are amenable to intuition derived from the conventional single-mode scenario. We then consider temperatures near the superconducting critical temperature T c , where dynamics beyond mean-field become important and conventional intuition fails. As fluctuations proliferate near T c , the dominant contribution to nonlinear response comes from an optical parametric drive of counterpropagating Josephson plasmons, which gives rise to 2D spectra that are qualitatively different from the mean-field predictions. As such, and in contrast to one-dimensional spectroscopy techniques, such as third harmonic generation, 2DTS can be used to directly probe thermally excited finite-momentum plasmons and their interactions. Our theory can readily be tested in cuprates, and we discuss implications beyond the present context of Josephson plasmons.

Charge-spin interconversion in epitaxial Pt probed by spin-orbit torques in a magnetic insulator

We measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a model system of all-epitaxial ferrite/Pt bilayers to gain insights into charge-spin interconversion in Pt. With negligible electronic conduction in the insulating ferrite, the crystalline Pt film acts as the sole source of charge-to-spin conversion. A small fieldlike SOT independent of Pt thickness suggests a weak Rashba-Edelstein effect at the ferrite/Pt interface. By contrast, we observe a sizable dampinglike SOT that depends on the Pt thickness, from which we deduce the dominance of an extrinsic spin-Hall effect (skew scattering) and Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation in the crystalline Pt film. Furthermore, our results point to a large internal spin-Hall ratio of ≈ 0.8 in epitaxial Pt. Furthermore, our experimental work takes an essential step towards understanding the mechanisms of charge-spin interconversion and SOTs in Pt-based heterostructures, which are crucial for power-efficient spintronic devices.

Evolution of the Magnetic Excitations in Electron-Doped La 2 - x Ce x CuO 4

Here we investigated the high energy spin excitations in electron-doped La 2-x Ce x CuO 4 , a cuprate superconductor, by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Efforts were paid to disentangle the paramagnon signal from non-spin-flip spectral weight mixing in the RIXS spectrum at Q ∥ =(0.6π,0) and (0.9π,0) along the (1 0) direction. Our results show that, for doping level x from 0.07 to 0.185, the variation of the paramagnon excitation energy is marginal. We discuss the implication of our results in connection with the evolution of the electron correlation strength in this system.

VTS Dynamic Model and Experimental Validation for Vibration Suppression

High Q-factor superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities are extremely sensitive to mechanical vibrations, which can cause an uncontrolled shift of the electromagnetic resonance frequency, with detrimental effects on the cavity performance. To avoid this phenomenon (i.e. microphonics) the dynamic behavior of the assembly must be studied, to design vibration suppression systems. In this paper, the numerical model of the Vertical Test Stand (VTS) insert adopted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for cold tests was studied, in the framework of the experimental characterization of Dark SRF cavities conducted by the SQMS (Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems) center. Due to the complexity of the assembly, experimental activity is of utmost importance to validate the model. Thus, vibration testing was performed on the actual system, and a good correlation between numerical and experimental results was found. Additionally, two different setups were compared, with and without implementing a preliminary passive vibration suppression system, to assess its effectiveness in reducing the microphonics phenomenon. The obtained results allowed for the design of an improved isolation system, which will be the subject of future experimental testing.

Characterization of photoinduced normal state through charge density wave in superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67

The normal state of high-T c cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic field study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67 through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the nonequilibrium state where people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO 2 plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical clue that the characteristics of the photoinduced normal state show a solid resemblance to those under magnetic fields in equilibrium conditions.

Excited Rydberg states in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructures

The functional form of Coulomb interactions in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TDMs) and other van der Waals solids is critical to many of their unique properties, e.g. strongly-correlated electron states, superconductivity and emergent ferromagnetism. This paper presents measurements of key excitonic energy levels in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructures. These measurements are obtained from resonance Raman experiments on specific Raman peaks only observed at excited states of the excitons. This data is used to validate a model of the Coulomb potential in these structures which predicts the exciton energies to within ~5 meV. This model is used to determine the effect of heterostructure formation on the single-particle band gaps of the layers and will have a wide applicability in designing the next generation of more complex TDM structures.

Magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO single crystal studied by neutron and x-ray scattering

We report the magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO crystals, the basis compound for one of the oxypnictide superconductors, using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). We find the structural tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition at T-S = 147K, the AFM phase transition of the Fe moments at T-Fe = 72K, and the Pr AFM phase transition at T-Pr = 21K. Combined high-resolution neutron diffraction and XRMS show unambiguously that the Pr moments point parallel to the longer orthorhombic a axis and order antiferromagnetically along the a axis but ferromagnetically along the b and c directions in the stripelike AFM order. The temperature-dependent magnetic order parameter of the Pr moments shows no evidence for a reorientation of moments.

Resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a light field of elliptically polarised waves

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances excited by a strong two-frequency field are considered for various values of the total angular momenta of the ground (F{sub g}) and excited (F{sub e}) states at a degenerated optical closed transition F{sub g} → F{sub e}. The light field is formed by two co-propagating waves with arbitrary elliptical polarisations. The process of spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground state is shown to determine the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1. The results obtained generalise the classification of transitions into ‘bright’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1) and ‘dark’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F and F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F – 1) transitions with respect to the direction of a subnatural resonance. Magnetic excitations in Nd 𝑛+1⁢ Ni 𝑛⁢ O 3⁢𝑛+1 Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates observed via resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Magnetic interactions are thought to play a key role in the properties of many unconventional superconductors, including cuprates, iron pnictides, and square-planar nickelates. Superconductivity was also recently observed in the bilayer and trilayer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates, the electronic structure of which is expected to differ from that of cuprates and square-planar nickelates. Here we study how electronic structure and magnetic interactions evolve with the number of layers, 𝑛, in thin film Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates Nd 𝑛+1 ⁢Ni 𝑛 ⁢O 3⁢𝑛+1 with 𝑛 = 1,3, and 5 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The RIXS spectra are consistent with a high-spin |3⁢𝑑 8 ⁢ $\underline{𝐿}$⟩ electronic configuration, resembling that of La 2−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢NiO 4 and the parent perovskite, NdNiO 3 . The magnetic excitations soften to lower energy in the structurally self-doped, higher-𝑛 films. In conclusion, our observations confirm that structural tuning is an effective route for altering electronic properties, such as magnetic superexchange, in this prominent family of materials.

Signatures of multiple charge excitations in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of metals

In this work, we study how multiple charge excitations appear in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of metals. Typically, the focus is upon single excitations in the problem, the plasmons and electron-hole pairs, while the multiexcitation processes are neglected. However, at small momentum transfer the multiexcitation contributions may dominate the signal and one needs to understand how to interpret the data in such cases. In particular, we demonstrate how to “decode” the total multiexcitation intensity and extract the plasmon dispersion. Furthermore, while our calculations are based on the random phase approximation for jellium, which does not allow us to obtain quantitatively precise results in the entire region of parameters, we expect them to capture semiqualitatively all features expected for charged Fermi-liquid states, including universal and singular properties of the RIXS spectra.
