The CITARS effort by the environmental research institute of Michigan

The objectives of the research task for crop identification technology assessment for remote sensing are outlined. Data gathered by the Landsat 1 multispectral scanner over the U.S. Corn Belt during 1973 is described, and procedures for recognition processing of the data is discussed in detail. The major crops of prime interest were corn and soybeans; they were recognized with different levels of accuracy throughout the growing season, but particularly during late August. Wheat was the major crop of interest in early June.

The ME/DE degree at the University of Kansas

An effort to provide advanced engineering education for aeronautical engineers is discussed. The Doctor of Engineering program involves a technical education in the area of interest above that of the M.S. degree. In addition, there is a core of systems, design, business, and technology and society courses which all students must take. Twenty-four hours are required in the core area. The original courses as modified with time still exist. A recent review has indicated a need for change. The core will remain, but it is the hope that the student will have a selection of 30 hours in these areas from which to pick 24 hours. The areas will be changed such that system analyses and design will be integrated to a further extent. The business area will be expanded. Areas such as technology assessment and forecasting will be added.

Summary of flight performance of the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package /EREP/

A group of six remote sensor systems (sensing visible, infrared, and microwave radiation) known as the Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP) was flown on the NASA Skylab spacecraft to furnish data to numerous investigators in the earth sciences and in technology assessment. Inflight sensor performance in three categories (functional, geometric, and radiometric) was evaluated using: (1) ground measurements of surface, atmospheric, and illumination parameters; (2) ground deployment and operation of microwave receivers and transponders to monitor and excite the active EREP sensors; (3) measurement of surface and atmospheric parameters by instrumented aircraft on underflights of Skylab passes; and (4) analysis of the actual flight data. This resulted in identification and correction of anomalous sensor operation, quantization of geometric distortions or aberrations, improvement or confirmation of calibrations, and determination of sensitivity, accuracy, and stability of the sensors.

Law's interface with expanding technology

The interaction of technology assessments with the process of political decisionmaking is discussed. Reasons are suggested as to why those engaged in the assessment function should not be optimistic of the impacts of assessment outcomes on political decisionmaking.

Arrow-wing supersonic cruise aircraft structural design concepts evaluation. Volume 1: Sections 1 through 6

The structural approach best suited for the design of a Mach 2.7 arrow-wing supersonic cruise aircraft was investigated. Results, procedures, and principal justification of results are presented. Detailed substantiation data are given. In general, each major analysis is presented sequentially in separate sections to provide continuity in the flow of the design concepts analysis effort. In addition to the design concepts evaluation and the detailed engineering design analyses, supporting tasks encompassing: (1) the controls system development; (2) the propulsion-airframe integration study; and (3) the advanced technology assessment are presented.

Space shuttle EVA opportunities

A technology assessment is presented on space extravehicular activities (EVA) that will be possible when the space shuttle orbiter is completed and launched. The use of EVA in payload systems design is discussed. Also discussed is space crew training. The role of EVA in connection with the Large Space Telescope and Skylab are described. The value of EVA in constructing structures in space and orbital assembly is examined. Excellent color illustrations are provided which show the proposed EVA functions that were described.

Energy requirement for the production of silicon solar arrays

Photovoltaics is subject of an extensive technology assessment in terms of its net energy potential as an alternate energy source. Reduction of quartzite pebbles, refinement, crystal growth, cell processing and panel building are evaluated for energy expenditure compared to direct, indirect, and overhead energies.

The Automated Planetary Space Station

Results are presented for a study on mission definition and design to determine broad technology directions and needs for advanced planetary spacecraft and future planetary missions. The discussion covers mission selection, system design, and technology assessment and review for a multicomponent spacecraft exploration facility provided with nuclear power propulsion. As an example, the Automated Planetary Space Station at Jupiter is examined as a generic concept which has the capability of conducting in-depth investigations of different aspects of the entire Jovian system. Mission planning is discussed relative to low-thrust trajectory control, automatic target identification and landing, roving vehicle operation, and automated sample analysis.
