Absolute absorption cross-section measurements of ozone in the wavelength region 238-335 nm and the temperature dependence

The absolute absorption cross-section of ozone has been experimentally determined at the temperatures 195, 228, and 295 K at several discrete wavelengths in the 238-335-nm region. The present results for ozone at 295 K are found to be in agreement with those of Hearn (1961). Absolute cross-section measurements of ozone at 195 K have confirmed previous (Freeman et al., 1984) relative cross-section measurements throughout the 240-335-nm region.

Temperature-dependent optical properties of Cd(1-x),Zn(x),Te substitute material

In this study, we report cryogenic optical properties of Cd(l-x), Zn(x), Te wafers that are used as substrate seed layers in the manufacturing of HgCdTe focal-plane array detectors. These studies are motivated by the fact that the substrate optical properties influence the overall detector performance. The studies consist of measuring the substrate frequency dependent transmittance T(W) and reflectance R(W) above and below the optical band-gap in the UV/Visible and infrared frequency ranges, and with temperature variation of the sample from 5 to 300 K. Determination of the optical absorption from these measurements show that the optical absorption energy gap near 1.6 eV shows a substantial increase as the temperature is reduced from 300 to 5 K. Furthermore, we observe the presence of infrared-active optical phonons whose peak frequency shifts as the temperature of the sample is varied over the measured temperature range. The theoretical frequency dependent optical conductivity, with allowance for redistribution of spectral weight among the interband transition charge carriers, will be discussed.

On the Lineshapes of Temperature-Dependent Transport Measurements of Superconductors Under Pressure

Recent reports of superconductivity in the vicinity of room temperature have been the subject of discussion by the community. Specifically, features in the resistance-temperature (R-T) relations have raised questions. We show that many of these features can arise from previously unaccounted-for dynamic effects associated with the AC transport techniques often used in high- pressure experiments. These dynamic AC effects can cause the apparent resistance (R apparent ) to diverge from the DC resistance (R DC ), sharpen measured superconducting transitions, and produce other features in the measured R-T response. Here, we also show that utilizing the full output of phase-sensitive transport measurements provides a valuable probe of superconducting samples in difficult-to-measure systems.

Modeling of a Two-Phase Jet Pump with Phase Change, Shocks and Temperature-Dependent Properties

One of the primary motivations behind this work is the attempt to understand the physics of a two-phase jet pump which constitutes part of a flow boiling test facility at NASA-Marshall. The flow boiling apparatus is intended to provide data necessary to design highly efficient two-phase thermal control systems for aerospace applications. The facility will also be capable of testing alternative refrigerants and evaluate their performance using various heat exchangers with enhanced surfaces. The test facility is also intended for use in evaluating single-phase performance of systems currently using CFC refrigerants. Literature dealing with jet pumps is abundant and covers a very wide array of application areas. Example application areas include vacuum pumps which are used in the food industry, power station work, and the chemical industry; ejector systems which have applications in the aircraft industry as cabin ventilators and for purposes of jet thrust augmentation; jet pumps which are used in the oil industry for oil well pumping; and steam-jet ejector refrigeration, to just name a few. Examples of work relevant to this investigation includes those of Fairuzov and Bredikhin (1995). While past researchers have been able to model the two-phase flow jet pump using the one-dimensional assumption with no shock waves and no phase change, there is no research known to the author apart from that of Anand (1992) who was able to account for condensation shocks. Thus, one of the objectives of this work is to model the dynamics of fluid interaction between a two-phase primary fluid and a subcooled liquid secondary fluid which is being injected employing atomizing spray injectors. The model developed accounts for phase transformations due to expansion, compression, and mixing. It also accounts for shock waves developing in the different parts of the jet pump as well as temperature and pressure dependencies of the fluid properties for both the primary two-phase mixture and the secondary subcooled liquid. The research effort on which this document partly reports described a relatively simple model capable of describing the performance of a two-phase flow jet pump. The model is based on the isentropic homogeneous expansion/compression hypothesis and is capable of fully incorporating the effects of shocks in both the mixing chamber and the throat/diffuser parts of the pump. The physical system chosen is identical to that experimentally tested by Fairuzov and Bredikhin (1995) and should therefore be relatively easy to validate.

The temperature-dependent conformational ensemble of SARS-CoV-2 main protease (M pro )

The COVID-19 pandemic, instigated by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, continues to plague the globe. The SARS-CoV-2 main protease, or M pro , is a promising target for the development of novel antiviral therapeutics. Previous X-ray crystal structures of M pro were obtained at cryogenic temperature or room temperature only. Here we report a series of high-resolution crystal structures of unliganded M pro across multiple temperatures from cryogenic to physiological, and another at high humidity. We interrogate these data sets with parsimonious multiconformer models, multi-copy ensemble models, and isomorphous difference density maps. Our analysis reveals a perturbation-dependent conformational landscape for M pro , including a mobile zinc ion interleaved between the catalytic dyad, mercurial conformational heterogeneity at various sites including a key substrate-binding loop, and a far-reaching intramolecular network bridging the active site and dimer interface. Our results may inspire new strategies for antiviral drug development to aid preparation for future coronavirus pandemics.

Temperature-Dependent Reaction Pathways in FeS 2 : Reversibility and the Electrochemical Formation of Fe 3 S 4

The present study has used a variety of characterization techniques to determine the products and reaction pathways involved in the rechargeable Li–FeS 2 system. We revisit both the initial lithiation and subsequent cycling of FeS 2 employing an ionic liquid electrolyte to investigate the intermediate and final charge products formed under varying thermal conditions (room temperature to 100 °C). The detection of Li 2 S and hexagonal FeS as the intermediate phases in the initial lithiation and the electrochemical formation of greigite, Fe 3 S 4 , as a charge product in the rechargeable reaction differ significantly from previous reports. The conditions for Fe 3 S 4 formation are shown to be dependent on both the temperature (~60 °C) and the availability of sulfur to drive a FeS to Fe 3 S 4 transformation. Upon further cycling, Fe 3 S 4 transforms to a lower sulfur content iron sulfide phase, a process which coincides with the loss of sulfur based on the new reaction pathways established in this work. The connection between sulfur loss, capacity fade, and charge product composition highlights the critical need to retain sulfur in the active material upon cycling.

Carrier recombination dynamics and temperature dependent optical properties of InAs–GaSb heterostructures

Heterostructures with two dissimilar materials could offer unprecedented properties if one can carefully synthesize these heterostructures with atomically smooth interfaces and reduced number of recombination centers. InAs/GaSb-based heterostructures have technological importance for long wavelength infrared photodetectors if one can synthesize these materials with high-optical quality and high-carrier lifetime. In this work, the InAs/GaSb heterostructures with a different number of heterointerfaces and growth conditions were grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy using valved cracker sources for both arsenic and antimony. Precise control of growth parameters and shutter sequences enabled abrupt InAs/GaSb heterointerfaces, as supported by a high-resolution transmission electron microscopic study. The temperature and power-dependent optical properties by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic analysis of InAs/GaSb heterostructures with 4 and 28 heterointerfaces displayed donor to the acceptor and the exciton bound to complex defects (V Ga Ga Sb ) 0 . Since the optical transition in PL measurements serves to determine the quality of the material, and the observed excitonic transitions from these InAs/GaSb heterostructures is an indication of high-quality materials. The high-carrier lifetimes of 139 ns to 185 ns from InAs/GaSb heterostructures were measured using microwave photoconductivity decay (μ-PCD) technique at room temperature. The observed increase in carrier lifetime is due to the decreasing number of Ga-related carrier recombination centers or defect complexes. This is further supported by the PL spectroscopic study. In addition, the carrier lifetime with different injection levels is supported by Shockley–Read–Hall recombination. We report these InAs/GaSb heterostructures with high-optical quality and high-carrier lifetimes would offer a path for the development of high-performance infrared photodetectors.

Complete separation of benzene-cyclohexene-cyclohexane mixtures via temperature-dependent molecular sieving by a flexible chain-like coordination polymer

Abstract The separation and purification of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons (benzene, cyclohexene, cyclohexane) represent a critically important but energy intensive process. Developing adsorptive separation technique to replace thermally driven distillation processes holds great promise to significantly reduce energy consumption. Here we report a flexible one-dimensional coordination polymer as an efficient adsorbent to discriminate ternary C6 cyclic hydrocarbons via an ideal molecular sieving mechanism. The compound undergoes fully reversible structural transformation associated with removal/re-coordination of water molecules and between activated and hydrocarbon-loaded forms. It exhibits distinct temperature- and adsorbate-dependent adsorption behavior which facilitates the complete separation of benzene, cyclohexene and cyclohexane from their binary and ternary mixtures, with the record-high uptake ratios for C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 and C 6 H 10 /C 6 H 12 in vapor phase and highest binary and ternary selectivities in liquid phase. In situ infrared spectroscopic analysis and ab initio calculations provide insight into the host-guest interactions and their effect on the preferential adsorption and structural transformation.

Temperature-dependent iron motion in extremophile rubredoxins – no need for ‘corresponding states’

Extremophile organisms are known that can metabolize at temperatures down to – 25 °C (psychrophiles) and up to 122 °C (hyperthermophiles). Understanding viability under extreme conditions is relevant for human health, biotechnological applications, and our search for life elsewhere in the universe. Information about the stability and dynamics of proteins under environmental extremes is an important factor in this regard. Here we compare the dynamics of small Fe-S proteins – rubredoxins – from psychrophilic and hyperthermophilic microorganisms, using three different nuclear techniques as well as molecular dynamics calculations to quantify motion at the Fe site. The theory of ‘corresponding states’ posits that homologous proteins from different extremophiles have comparable flexibilities at the optimum growth temperatures of their respective organisms. Although ‘corresponding states’ would predict greater flexibility for rubredoxins that operate at low temperatures, we find that from 4 to 300 K, the dynamics of the Fe sites in these homologous proteins are essentially equivalent.

O2/1-Sigma sub g/+// relaxation in collisions - Temperature dependence of the interaction with HBr

Rate constants for the quenching of O2(1-Sigma sub g(+)) in the temperature range 170-400 K were obtained by observing the change in the rate of decay of this oxygen emission as a function of HBr concentration. At each temperature the decay was observed at eight different HBr concentrations ranging from 0 to 6 x 10 to the -6th moles/l. It is found that long range multipolar interactions make a major contribution to the quenching of the oxygen molecule by H2, with the quenching shown to be most effective at low temperatures. Short range repulsive interactions may also contribute to the quenching process, especially at high temperatures. The suggestion that the quenching process is dominated by the ability of the quencher to take up the energy of the oxygen molecule transition in vibrational and rotational motion is confirmed.

Vibration-rotation line shifts for 1 sigma g + H2/V,J/-1S/0/ He computed via close coupling - Temperature dependence

The density shifting of vibration-rotation transitions of H2 perturbed by He was computed (as a function of temperature) with no adjustable parameters. The calculation was carried out using the framework of the impact theory of Baranger with S-matrix elements obtained via close coupling calculations which incorporated the ab initio H2-H2 system potential of Tsapline et al.(1977). Vibrational and rotational inelasticity were neglected in the calculations; nevertheless good agreement with experimental data was obtained, up to moderate temperatures, for the density shift. A much poorer comparison was obtained for the density broadening.

Research and development program for non-linear structural modeling with advanced time-temperature dependent constitutive relationships

Results of a 20-month research and development program for nonlinear structural modeling with advanced time-temperature constitutive relationships are reported. The program included: (1) the evaluation of a number of viscoplastic constitutive models in the published literature; (2) incorporation of three of the most appropriate constitutive models into the MARC nonlinear finite element program; (3) calibration of the three constitutive models against experimental data using Hastelloy-X material; and (4) application of the most appropriate constitutive model to a three dimensional finite element analysis of a cylindrical combustor liner louver test specimen to establish the capability of the viscoplastic model to predict component structural response.

The ultraviolet cross-sections of ozone. I. The measurements. II - Results and temperature dependence

Absorption cross-sections of ozone have been measured over the range 230 nm to 350 nm, and for temperatures 200 K to 300 K, with improved photometric accuracy and spectral resolution. These measurements are referred to the cross-section at the 253.65 nm mercury line by the Hearn value (1961), 1147 x 10 to the -20th/sq cm, and show an internal consistency of + or - 1 percent. Tables of ozone absorption cross-section in the ultraviolet have been prepared for intervals of 0.05 nm over the range 245 to 340 nm. at each wavelength entry in the table a set of coefficients has been derived that permits the cross-section to be computed as a function of temperature, between 200 K and 300 K, with an accuracy of 1 percent.

Temperature dependence (4K to 300K) of the electrical resistivity of methane grown carbon fibers

Experimental measurements of the electrical resistivity vs temperature of methane vapor grown carbon fibers are presented. The fibers are heat treated from 1100 C (as-grown) to 3000 C. Data are fit to a standard two band model, which yields values for boundary scattering limited electron mobility, in-plane mean free path, energy band overlap, and total carrier density. The data are also fit to an ellipsoidal band model, where data fits yield effective masses, band overlap, Fermi velocity, phonon contributions to scattering, and ionized impurity scattering rates.

Temperature Dependence of the Microwave Dielectric Behavior of Selected Materials

A very sensitive thermal bath is designed to study the effect of temperature on the microwave dielectric response of a sample of nickel oxide and cobalt oxide. The sample under study is placed in a microwave resonant cavity in the TE(sub 011) mode. The perturbations of the electric field are recorded in terms of the frequency shifts and the width changes of the microwave resonant signal as seen on the oscilloscope. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant are calculated by using the values of the frequency shifts and width changes in the Slater's perturbation equations. The dielectric behavior of nickel oxide and cobalt oxide and also their mixture is studied at a microwave frequency of 9.2 GHz as a function of temperature. A computer program is written to analyze the dielectric constant values at different temperatures. The resonant cavity seems to be very sensitive in studying the dielectric relaxation mechanism in these materials. The dielectric behavior is also analyzed using Debye's equations, and relaxation times for these materials are calculated at microwave frequencies.

Temperature Dependence of 239 Pu NMR Parameters in PuO 2

Solid-state 239 Pu NMR spectra of crystalline PuO 2 have been recorded over temperatures from 11 to 295 K with better than part per thousand resolution. These experiments represent the first independent detection of 239 Pu NMR in PuO 2 since the original report by Yasuoka and co-workers and extend the NMR observations to higher temperatures where recent theoretical explanations of the enigmatic magnetism and electronic structure of PuO 2 may be evaluated. The sensitivity achieved in these experiments was sufficient to measure the sinusoidal dependence of the NMR signal amplitude on the radiofrequency pulse length, which allows the determination of the nuclear g factor and magnetic moment of 239 Pu. These results demonstrate the use of NMR with an open-shell f element to explore subtle magnetic effects in plutonium materials of both technological and scientific significance.
