Optical transmittance of fused silica at elevated temperatures during high energy electron bombardment.

An experimental determination of the optical transmission of Corning 7940 UV and Suprasil I fused silica has been made. The LeRC dynamitron provided the equivalent ionizing radiation and high temperature that the transparent gas divider of an operating nuclear light bulb engine would experience. The irradiation induced absorption was measured at 2150 A, 2700 A, and 4500 A. The length of the irradiations were sufficient so that an equilibrium between radiation induced coloration and high temperature annealing was reached. The experimental results indicate a significant optical absorption, particularly at the shorter wavelength, which would make the use of fused silica in this concept questionable.

Leaf light reflectance, transmittance, absorptance, and optical and geometrical parameters for eleven plant genera with different leaf mesophyll arrangements.

Review of research on radiation interactions within plant canopies and communities and interactions of various leaf structures (mesophyll arrangements) with electromagnetic radiation involved in the interpretation of data sensed from air or spacecraft. The hypothesis underlying the research reported is that leaf mesophyll arrangements influence spectral energy measurements of leaves.

Reflectance and transmittance characteristics of several selected green and blue-green unialgae.

Obtained reflectance properties of green and blue-green unialgae are evaluated for determining the feasibility of using selected wavelengths in differentiating between green and blue-green algae. The attempt is made to establish selected wavelengths and ratios that would delineate relative concentrations of the algal suspensions. The results should prove helpful in the selection of spectral bands usable in conjunction with multispectrum scanners for qualitative and quantitative studies of algae in bodies of water.

An implantable blood pressure and flow transmitter.

A miniature totally implantable FM/FM telemetry system has been developed to simultaneously measure blood pressure and blood flow, thus providing an appreciation of the hemodynamics of the circulation to the entire body or to a particular organ. Developed for work with animal subjects, the telemetry system's transmission time is controlled by an RF signal that permits an operating life of several months. Pressure is detected by a miniature intravascular transducer and flow is detected by an extravascular interferometric ultrasonic technique. Both pressure and flow are calibrated prior to implanting. The pressure calibration can be checked after the implanting by cannulation; flow calibration can be verified only at the end of the experiment by determining the voltage output from the implanted sensing system as a function of several measured flow rates. The utility of this device has been established by its use in investigating canine renal circulation during exercise, emotional encounters, administration of drugs, and application of accelerative forces.

On the lidar determination of atmospheric transmittance

A solution of the lidar equation is given with the aim of determining the attenuation coefficient of the atmosphere under conditions of the existence of a relation between it and the effective backscatter area. The errors of determining the attenuation coefficient from measurements of the echo signal power are analyzed. A proposed method of determining that coefficient by sounding with variable pulse lengths is examined.

Gyroflex data transmittal and data acquisition system analysis

Data obtained from the evaluation of GYROFLEX gyro is presented herein, along with a description of the data acquisition system. In addition, the appendices contain an analysis of the voltmeter used for data collection, and the filtering technique employed. It is shown that the test setup is satisfactory for testing GYROFLEX gyros.

Performance characteristics of the 12 GHz, 200 watt transmitter experiment package for CTS

The experiment package consists of a 200 W output stage tube (OST) powered by a power processing system (PPS). Descriptions of both the PPS and OST are given. The PPS provides the necessary voltages with a measured dc/dc conversion efficiency of 89 percent. The OST, a traveling wave tube with multiple collectors, has a saturated rf output power of 224 W and operates at an overall efficiency exceeding 40 percent over an 85 MHz bandwidth at 12 GHz. OST performance given includes frequency response, saturation characteristics, group delay, AM to PM conversion, inter-modulation distortion, and two channel gain suppression. Single and dual channel FM video performance is presented. It was determined that for 12 MHz peak to peak frequency deviation on each channel, dual channel FM television signals can be transmitted through the TEP at 60 W, each channel, with 40 MHz channel spacing (center to center).

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.

Power processing system for a 200 watt communication satellite transmitter

A power processing system (PPS) for a communication satellite, high power (200W RF) multi-stage depressed collector, 12 GHz, traveling wave tube, is described. The PPS converts spacecraft bus power at a nominal voltage of 76 Vdc to the levels necessary for operating a ten-collector coupled cavity TWT requiring approximately 500 watts of input power. Regulated voltages of up to -11.3K Vdc are provided along with command, protection and telemetry signal conditioning circuits. Power processor interface requirements are set forth and a block diagram illustrating the basic approach utilized is presented. Overall performance, design characteristics and unique features are discussed. Thermal and mechanical interface requirements impacting on PPS design are described as well as the thermal control technique utilized for the overall PPS/TWT assembly.

The mixture problem in computer mapping of terrain: Improved techniques for establishing spectral signature, atmospheric path radiance, and transmittance

The results of LANDSAT and Skylab research programs on the effects of the atmosphere on computer mapping of terrain include: (1) the concept of a ground truth map needs to be drastically revised; (2) the concept of training areas and test areas is not as simple as generally thought because of the problem of pixels that represent a mixture of terrain classes; (3) this mixture problem needs to be more widely recognized and dealt with by techniques of calculating spectral signatures of mixed classes, or by other methods; (4) atmospheric effects should be considered in computer mapping of terrain and in monitoring changes; and (5) terrain features may be used as calibration panels on the ground, from which atmospheric conditions can be determined and monitored. Results are presented of a test area in mountainous terrain of south-central Colorado for which an initial classification was made using simulated mixture-class spectral signatures and actual LANDSAT-1-MSS data.

Cooling Waveguide Flanges in Microwave Transmitters

Flang appendage circulates coolant for conductive heat removal. Flange appendage bore accomodates coolant tube. O-ring surrounds bore; when adjacent waveguide sections are bolted together, continuous conduit is formed for coolant. Pressure release groove in modified flange prevents coolant from entering waveguide should O'ring seal fail.
